Capitalization

Capitalization, just like punctuation, is another crucial mechanic in

academic writing since it helps the organization of the sentences, the
clarification of ambiguous expressions, and the specification of certain
important words. In other words, every new sentence we write must be
indicated to the reader by the simple action of capitalizing the initial
letter of the first word.

- Rules of Capitalization:

 Rule One: Capitalize the first word of every sentence.

 Rule Two: Capitalize the pronoun “ I “
 Rule Three: Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation.
 Rule Four: Capitalize the first word and every important word in a title.
Do not capitalize articles, prepositions, or short connecting words unless
they begin the title.
 Rule Five: Capitalize days of the week, months of the year, and holidays.
Do not capitalize the names of seasons.
 Rule Six: Capitalize historical events, periods, and documents.
 Rule Seven: Capitalize the names of all languages, nationalities, races,
religions, deities, and sacred terms.

2

3/ Terms for relatives (mother, sister, nephew, uncle) when they are used
in the place of proper names:
 Rule Nine: Capitalize the names of specific things and places.

2/ Specific streets, cities, states, and countries:
