4. There are four sections in the paper. Sections A, B and C are Compulsory. Note
the choices in section D.

Section A – writing (20 Marks)

Answer both questions 1 and 2

Question 1. Formal Writing (10 marks)

(Spend about 25 minutes on these questions)

Write on one of the topics (a)-(g) given under the heading, expository Essay, Speech,
Letter and report. Write about 200 words.

In marking, the examiner will be looking especially for the use of appropriate register,
originality of ideas, logical organisation, correct paragraphing, relevant linkage, expression
and style.

Expository Essay

Either (a) sports – a way out of unemployment

Or a (b) Abandoned infant is a rising problem in Fiji.

Or (c) Farmers are the backbone of Fijis economy.

Or (d) Peace is what we all need.

Speech

Or (e) you are the Director of the Council of Churches and you have been invited to
address a Youth Rally on National Youth Day on the topic:

Preserve our cultural values.

Write the text of your speech.

Letter

Or (f) your name is Indar Deo or Maca Naiorosui. You are a village nurse in Saqani,
Buca Bay and you want to make the village people aware of good health and hygiene in
order to do this, you need some help.

Write a letter to the Divisional Medical, Officer, Ministry of Health, Labasa, asking for help to
raise awareness of public health in your area. You can request for pamphlets, charts,
posters and some financial help and two other necessary details.

Question 2: Personal writing (10 marks)

The theme of this question is pollution. To help you, photographs are provided on other
page. You may use one or a combination of these photographs, to help you write on the
theme.

Write about 200 words on one of the topics (a) – ( e) given below. Each requires writing in
a particular register for a particular audience.

If you choose option (b), use the name to Chang or Laisa and the address 28 Diri, Road,
Ra.

Either (a) write a conversation between two people who are walking past a settlement and
commenting on a polluted area.

(b) Write a letter to the editor of a local newspaper expressing your opinions on
the pollution of our environment.

(c) Using one of the photographs, write a descriptive essay based on the theme.

Or (d) Write a narrative essay based on the theme of this question.

Or (e) Write a letter to a friend overseas telling him/her about the cleanup campaign
that was held at your school.
