How are you?
Today, you are going to learn about the genre of the materials you
are viewing. You will know their differences and similarities. You will also
know how to identify whether they are movie clip, trailer, news flash, internet-
based program, documentary, video, etc.
Are you ready? Let’s begin.

Watch and identify the following short presentations using these four
metacards labelled as Commercial, News Report, Movie Scene, and Music
Video.
Movie clip News Report

Movie Scene Music Video

1. A heartbreaking scene of Titanic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

4. a short film (Jollibee) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw66Da0GFPM

Was it easy for you to do the activity? Let’s see if your

answers are correct. Did you answer Movie scene for the first
presentation, News Report for the second, Music Video for the
third and Movie clip for the fourth presentation? If you made

1
mistakes and found it difficult to distinguish what is in the
metacards, be ready to read and understand the lesson
prepared for you to study and learn.

This module aims to help you identify the genre of a material viewed
(such as movie clip, trailer, news flash, internet-based program, documentary,
video, etc.). (EN7VC-I-d-6)
Duration: 2 days

Go back to the activity you have just done, and study the
examples. What have you observed among the presentation?

Notice that the presentations are quite short but depict

different contents, feelings and ideas.

The first presentation is a sample of a movie scene, next

is a news report, followed by a music video and the last is
commercial.

The word genre means a kind or group. Here are the

genres of the materials you usually view.

Music Video- a commercial video featuring a

performance of a popular song, often through a stylized
dramatization by the performers with lip syncing and special
effects (Dictionary.com)

2
Trailer- a short promotional film composed of clips
showing highlights of a movie due for release in the near
future (Dictionary.com)

Documentary-based on or re-creating an actual event,

era, life story, etc., that purports to be factually accurate and
contains no fictional element (Dictionary.com)

News Report- a report of recent event; intelligence;

information (Dictionary.com)

Movie- a recording of moving images that tells a story

and that people watch on a screen or television (Merriam-
Webster Dictionary)

Movie Clip- a strip of motion-picture film, especially an

excerpt from a longer film or one inserted as part of another
telecast or full-length motion picture. (Dictionary.com)

These genres help you learn what you are viewing. You
can recognize the way the views should be presented by
learning about the features of various materials.

Let us familiarize ourselves with the following videos. Observe the

features and characteristics.

What have you noticed? Are those videos presenting to
you the same features and characteristics?

As you have seen each played videos has its own

features and styles depending on the ideas conveyed.

We can say that in a news report/news flash, it is formal

and factual. In the documentary, the actual scenario is
presented while the trailer is just showing a short part of the
movie that will give audience a hint. Compared to the trailer a
short film shows the plot of the movie where audience can see
the summary of the whole thing. The music video shows a
certain artist performing to express ideas out of her/his song.

A. In a ½- piece of paper, pick two viewed materials and

describe each.

B. Write the definition or your brief idea about the features

and characteristics of the following Genre of materials
viewed based from the discussion.

1. News Report
2. Movie clip
3. Trailer
4. Documentary
5. Music video
6. Movie

4

activity. Maybe this time, you will get a perfect score.

A. Compare and contrast the features and characteristics of at

least two viewed materials earlier using the Venn Diagram.

5
Remember This
Materials viewed have varied features and characteristics. They differ
in terms of purpose and intentions.

Music Video is a commercial video featuring a performance of a

popular song, often through a stylized dramatization by the performers with lip
syncing and special effects Trailer is a short promotional film composed of
clips showing highlights of a movie due for release in the near future
Documentary is based on or re-creating an actual event, era, life story, etc.,
that purports to be factually accurate and contains no fictional element. News
Report is a report of recent event; intelligence; information. Movie is a
recording of moving images that tells a story and that people watch on a
screen or television. Movie Clip is a strip of motion-picture film, especially an
excerpt from a longer film or one inserted as part of another telecast or full-
