City of SLO and Cal Poly St.

Patrick’s Day Advance Preparation & Outreach - 2024

Staff from Cal Poly and City of SLO met monthly starting in Fall 2023 to plan for expected neighborhood party weekend (March 16 &
17) and developed comprehensive collaborations to inform students of expectations and encourage safety and responsibility.

• Dean Pedersen will send a campus-wide email offering St. Patrick’s Day safety tips and alternative programming options to
the entire student body on March 12th.

• University Housing will not be allowing guests to stay overnight from Thursday, March 14 8 p.m. to Monday, March 18 at 8
a.m.

• Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) will send a letter signed by all council presidents, Greek Life community emphasizing safety
and potential repercussions for violations.

• News item will be added to Cal Poly Now regarding safety tips and alternative programming.

• Friday Night Live will be boothing at YTT lawn from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, March 15, including overdose prevention and
NarCan training/distribution.

• FSL and Campus Health & Wellbeing (CHW) partnered to create 40 party safe boxes including 5400 items. Boxes will be
distributed to houses that register a party through FSL. Items included: water bottles, Aware Awake Alive messaging,
granola bars & other snacks with PULSE/CHW safe partying messaging, Narcan & fentanyl education, condoms, and
educational flyers with information on standard drink sizes and safe partying tips.

• CHW/PULSE students will table on-campus on March 14th and on the corner of Foothill & California on March 16th from
6:00am-8:00am. Intervention will include a spin wheel with facts about drinking and partying safer, activity to learn
standard drink sizes, display board where students can share “how they plan to party safe” and handing out snacks, water
and Gatorade stickered with safety messaging (1500 items). Opioid Overdose Prevention Team will provide Narcan training
and distribution during Thursday booth/FSL party safe box pick-up.

• IHC is hosting a Midnight Breakfast on Friday, March 15 from 9 p.m.-Midnight. This event happens every quarter prior to
finals week.

• IHC distributing goody bags with Liquid IV, snacks, and PULSE safe party messaging the week of St. Patrick’s Day to every
available front desk in Residential Life.

• ASI sponsoring breakfast burritos on Saturday, March 16 from 5-6:00 a.m. at 1901 Marketplace. PULSE will table with safety
messaging and additional snacks.

• Disseminated Safety Enhancement Zone (SEZ) information throughout campus via digital and hard copies. SEZ ads were also
purchased to run on Instagram – algorithm set for San Luis Obispo County, targeting residents ages 18 to 26. Finally, SEZ
posters were distributed via Downtown SLO Food, Beverage, Service Committee for display in bars/restaurants.

• Christine Wallace attended IFC, Panhellenic and USFC board meetings to distribute SEZ information.

• IFC hosting a clean-up day Sunday, March 17th to remove expected party related trash from neighborhood streets and
sidewalks.

• CHW/PULSE designed and distributed PPT flyers for all Housing and CHW displays beginning in early March. Messaging
included information on safer partying, binge drinking & alcohol poisoning, personal responsibility and arranging a safe ride
home. IHC partnered with CHW to create print flyer for Housing with safety tips for those going out and relaxation/study
tips for those staying in.

• CPPD & SLOPD at full deployment throughout the weekend, with mobile field force available if needed.
