SHOPPING AND SPENDING [LISTENING]

Activity 1: MATCHING (10 minutes)

Teachers play audio files and let students guess which picture match which
word. After the students pick out the pictures, teachers give them the correct
answers. Teachers may add some rewards for correct answers or penalties for
wrong answers.

1. Receipt (n) a printed piece of paper you get when you buy something,
showing the name of the store, the price of the product, the time you
bought it, etc.
2. Refund (n) money that a store gives back to you, for example, because
you no longer want to buy something
3. Sale (n) a period of time when a store makes the price of some of its
products lower than usual
4. Save (v) to spend less money than usual
5. Sale assistant (n) a person whose job is to serve customers in a shop
6. Try…on (v) to put a piece of clothing on in a store to check that you
like it and it’s the correct size for you
7. Fit (v) to be the right size for your body
8. Take…back (v) to return a product to a store because there is a problem
with it or you aren’t happy with it
9. Customer service (n) where you get help if you have a problem with
something you bought or want to buy
10. Special offer (n) a lower than usual price or something extra that a
store gives for a period of time

Activity 2: LISTENING (20 minutes)

Teachers play an audio file and let students fill out the answers they listen to.
After the students finish, teachers give out the answers and additional tips for
better listening.
Some tips for better listening in tests:

 Move on if you miss an answer.


 Guess first from the context.
 Experiment with different accents.

Teachers can give more useful tips if possible.

grammatical points:

Talking about shopping

You will often hear people talking about shopping in the IELTS test, as well as
in real life, so it's important to have a range of vocabulary and phrases that you
can use.

Going shopping

The usual verbs used to refer to the activity are go, do and shop:

 go shopping / to the shops / to the supermarket


 do the shopping
 shop online/ for groceries
