【Abstract】
The purpose of this paper is to examine the distributive aspect implied
in Jeremy Bentham’s utilitarianism. His constant concern in his economic
writings was in general to reduce the pain of the poor, and his suggestion
for the provision of subsistence for the poor by means of government’s
interference was a fairly radical one from the perspective of his time. This
suggestion may be a practically necessary consequence of his utilitarianism
that pursues as its ultimate end the greatest happiness for the greatest
number. Bentham sets up the four subordinate ends conducive to the
realization of this ultimate end. They are subsistence, abundance, security,
and equality. But they are in a dual relationship that they support and
simultaneously restrict one another.
In this paper, firstly, I will briefly summarize those four subordinate
ends, and, with regard to subsistence and security among them, look into
the theoretical background in which he strongly defended the private
property rights. Secondly, with regard to equality among the four, I will
scrutinize the position he took for the principle of diminishing marginal
utility suggested by himself, and by this bring to light a general outline of
the equality or distribution he pursued in practice. Lastly, I will critically
examine the grounds of the reform of inheritance law he suggested as a
