► a state of complete physical , mental and social well being, not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
► Meatal health:
► state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own
cop with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and
fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to the community.
OVERVIEW

► It is important to treat mental health like we do


physical health.
► We do not blame individuals for getting sick so we
should be accepting of individuals who may be
struggling with mental health issues.
► People affected by mental illness are not alone or
uncommon – 1 in 5 adults deal with a mental
health condition.

► People at-risk for suicide are not weak and should


not feel shame – they are in a place of hopelessness
and we can show them that they are important and
cared for.
► Mental health is a personal issue, a family issue, a
community issue, and a society issue.

COMMON MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIOS

frequently observed in the workplace are:

► depression .
► anxiety.
WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

❑ Depression is one of the most common types of


mental health conditions and often develops
alongside anxiety.
► Depression can be mild and short-lived or severe and
long-lasting. Some people are affected by depression
only once, while others may experience it multiple
times.
► Depression can lead to suicide, but this is preventable
when appropriate support is provided. It’s important
to know that much can be done to help people who
are thinking about suicide.
WHAT IS ANXIETY?

❑ Anxiety is the feeling you get when you’re worried or


scared about something. It is a natural, human feeling
of fear or panic. Afterwards, we usually calm down
and feel better.
► Small amounts of worry and fear can help keep us
safe and even protect us from danger. But sometimes
anxiety can make us feel like things are worse than
they actually are and can feel overwhelming.
Constant worry can lead to prolonged anxiety.
FACTS IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

► The Construction industry has the second highest


rate of suicide in the United States at 53.3
per100,000 workers according to the Center for
Disease Control (CDC).
WHAT MAKES CONSTRUCTION
WORKERS VULNERABLE?

► We work in roles that are isolating.


► Employment is dependent on economy.
► Spending large amounts of time away from family
and friends.
► Chronic pain caused by manual labor.
► Stress due to time constraints, work environment &
poor sleep.
► Stigma of mental illness encourages secrecy &
isolation.

the signs and symptoms.

► Extreme mood swings.

PREVENTION TIPS

► Don’t ignore it – Speak up if you’re worried


► Show your concern, that you’ve noticed they are
acting differently and inquire why they don’t seem
like themselves.
► Respond quickly if you believe your
friend/coworker is in crisis.
► Offer help and support.
► Call the suicide prevention hotline or crisis text line
for ideas to help your coworker.
