2.0 GEOLOGICAL INFORMATION OF THE REGION

GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE AREA

The project site is located in Raichur District in the State of Karnataka.

Geomorphologically, Raichur district can be broadly classified into three major zones
viz, (a). The Northern rugged plateau, ii. (b) The Southern lower plains with inselbergs
and isolated hillocks and (c) Valley fills. Continuous range of hills are absent in the
district but a few cluster of hills are seen towards east, west, northwest, centre, and
southwest.

CLIMATE AND RAINFALL

The climate of the district can be termed as mild to severe, with mild winters and hot
summers. December is the coldest month with mean daily minimum of 17.7º C, while
May is the hottest month with mean daily maximum temperature of 39.8º C. The day
temperature in May often touches 45.0º C. Relative humidity of over 75% is common
during monsoon period. Wind speeds exceeding 15 km/h are common during the months
of June and July. The recorded annual potential evaporation is around 1950 mm with
May registering over 220 mm and December around 120 mm. The normal annual rainfall
of the district is 621 mm.
SIESMICITY

Seismicity in India is categorized in India into following four zones, Zone II: seismically
less active, zone III: moderately active, Zone IV: highly active, while the zone V
represents highest seismicity. The area under study and its surroundings are seismically
less active (mostly in seismic zone II). In seismic design zone factor, z of 0.10 is
recommended.

BOREHOLES

Bore-hole was selected by Engineer in charge in order to obtain comprehensive sub-soil

data for this site. Soil samples collected for different test at different levels. The sub-soil
exploration work at the proposed site was carried out manually / mechanically using 150
mm diameter shell and augur manual equipment in soft strata and power-driven
mechanical boring in hard strata using diamond cutter, as per IS: 1892- 1979.

STANDARD PENETRATION TESTS

Standard penetration test plays a major role in sub soil investigation termination of safe
bearing capacity of soil in non-cohesive type soil, particularly in non-cohesive granular
sandy soil and where the UDS could not be collected either due to high liquidity or non-
cohesive nature of soil. The SPT tests were conducted as per IS: 2131-1981
respectively. The SPT sampler was lower inside the borehole after drilling the required
level and is driven by a 63.50 kg Rammer with a free fall of 750 mm. driving 450 mm in
One stages 150 mm each and the number of blows for each 150mm penetration for 2nd
& 3rd 150 mm drive recorded as “N”. Refusal was considered for N>100. The details of
location of test and SPT value [N-value] as given in the bore-hole data sheet.

DISTURBED SAMPLES
In all boreholes, disturbed soil samples were taken at every 1.50 m interval and at
significant change of stratum (or as per specified). Soil from cutting edge of undisturbed
samplers and from split spoon sampler used for standard penetration tests was taken as
disturbed samples by manually operated hammer. These samples were placed without
delay in adequately sealed polythene bags.

UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLES (UDS)

The UDS were collected from the boreholes at every 1.50 m interval & change of strata
as per sampling specifications, in thin-walled sampling tubes of 100 mm dia. and 450
mm length. These sampling tubes after retrieval from the boreholes were properly waxed
and sealed at both ends. These were carefully labeled and transported to the laboratory
for testing. UDS wherever slipped during lifting, were duly marked in the bore logs as
well in the soil profile.

ROCK CORE SAMPLES

Drilling was advanced by rotary core drilling method using double tube core barrels as
per the guidelines of IS: 6926-1996. A core barrel and Nx sized bits are used for drilling
and recovering rock cores. Recovered rock cores were numbered serially and preserved
in good quality sturdy wooden core boxes as specified in IS: 4078-1980. Rock core
recovery and Rock Quality Designation (RQD) were computed for every run length
drilled.

ASSESSMENT OF LIQUEFACTION POTENTIAL OF THE SITE

 General
Condition of decrease in the shear strength and/or stiffness caused by the increase in
pore water pressures in saturated cohesion less materials during earthquake ground
motion is referred to as liquefaction. It gives rise to significant permanent deformations
or even to condition of near-zero effective stress in the soil.
 Consideration
The following information has been considered in the Liquefaction calculation
 Project Site lies in = Zone II
[IS-1893 Part-1: 2016 / Fig. 1]
 Peak Ground Acceleration =0.10

 Magnitude of Earthquake = 6.00
[IS-1893 Part-1: 2016 / Annex: 1]
 Methodology
Liquefaction potential shall be evaluated by well-established methods of geotechnical
engineering, based on field correlations between in situ measurements and the critical
cyclic shear stresses known to have caused liquefaction during past earthquakes.
Liquefaction potential may be estimated by calculating the factor of safety (FOS),
This is given as,

Where, CRR = Cyclic resistance Ratio

CSR = Cyclic Stress Ratio
 The soil shall be considered as liquefiable if, FOS < 1
 Cyclic Resistance Ratio [CRR]
The cyclic resistance is to be calculated from measured blow count values of Standard
Penetration Testing (SPT), suitably modified with different correction factors.

BEARING CAPACITY AND SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS FOR OPEN FOUNDATIONS

IN SOIL
Bearing capacity analysis was carried out based on the shear parameters (c- Ф), as
interpreted from field and laboratory tests to determine the safe net bearing capacity
(shear criterion).
The bearing capacity equation used is as follows:

QNet Ultimate = cNCSCDCIC+q(Nq-1)SqDqIq+(1/2) BϒNϒSϒDϒIϒW'

where:
QNet Ultimate = net Ultimate bearing capacity of soil, based on the shear failure
criterion.
c = cohesion intercept,

q = overburden pressure

ϒ = Total unit weight of soil

B = Width of Foundation

W' = Water table correction factor

NC, Nq, Nϒ = Bearing capacity factors which are a function of

Sc, Sq, Sϒ = Shape factors. For Strip footings, Sc = Sq = Sϒ = 1

For Square footing = Sc = 1.3, Sq = 1.2, Sϒ = 0.6

dc, dq, dϒ = Depth factors

For Ф< 10, dc = 1 + 0.2 tan (45 + Ф /2) D/B, dq = dϒ = 1

For Ф > 10, dq = dϒ = 1 + 0.1 tan (45 + Ф / 2) D/B

Appropriate values have been substituted into the bearing capacity equation given
above to compute the safe net bearing capacity. The values have been checked to
determine the settlement of the foundation under the safe bearing pressure. The
allowable bearing pressure has been taken as the lower of the two values computed
from the bearing capacity shear failure criterion as well as that computed from the
tolerable settlement criterion.

In predominantly granular soils, settlement analysis has been performed based on the
SPT values in accordance with Clause 9.1.4 of IS 8009 (Part 1) - 1976 Fig.9.

Where applicable (typically where substantial incremental stresses are anticipated in

cohesive strata below groundwater table), settlement analysis has been performed
based on classical theory; as the sum of elastic settlement and consolidation
settlements. The elastic settlement is calculated in accordance with Clause 9.2.3 of IS
8009 Part 1-1976. The consolidation settlement is computed in accordance with Clause
9.2.2 of IS 8009 (Part 1)-1976.
BEARING CAPACITY OF OPEN FOUNDATIONS ON ROCK

Analysis for allowable bearing capacity on rock has been done by the following
four methods.
a) Based on Classification of Rock as per Table-2 of IS: 12070: Satisfies both Shear
and Settlement Criterion (For preliminary assessment)

b) Based on rock mass rating (RMR value): Satisfies Settlement Criteria

c) Based on compressive strength of intact rock specimen using the procedure
given in IS: 12070: Satisfies Shear Criteria.
SAFE BEARING PRESSURE BASED ON CLASSIFICATION OF ROCK

Safe bearing Pressure based on classification of rock is given by IS: 12070 is

SAFE BEARING PRESSURE FROM THE RMR SYSTEM

Analysis has been carried out using the RMR also known as Geo-mechanics
classification by considering various parameters such as uni-axial compressive strength,
RQD, spacing and condition of discontinuities and ground water condition. The
correlation between the RMR value and allowable pressure has been given in Table –3
IS: 12070. This will ensure settlement of raft foundation to be less than 12 mm

Classification No I II III IV V

Description of Rock Very Good Good Fair Poor Very Poor

RMR 100-81 80-61 60-41 40-21 20-0

Q ns (T/m2) 600-448 448-288 280-141 135 - 48 45-30

The RMR for use in Table should be the average within a depth below foundation level
equal to the width of foundation, provided the RMR is fairly uniform within the depth. If
the upper part of the rock, within a depth of about one fourth of the width of foundation, is
of lower quality the value of this part should be used or the inferior rock should be
removed. Since these values are based on limiting the settlement, they should not be
increased if the foundation is embedded into the rock.

SAFE BEARING CAPACITY OF OPEN FOUNDATION IN COMPLETELY TO

HIGHLY WEATHERED / HIGHLY FRACTURED ROCK

For Calculating SBC, Highly weathered / highly fractured rock (HWR) with low core
recoveries and almost Nil RQD shall be considered as Hard Soil as per IRC 78, Clause
706.3.1.1.2.

CAPACITY OF PILE BASED ON PILE SOIL INTERACTION

AXIAL CAPACITY OF PILES IN SOIL

Axial load carrying capacity of pile is initially determined by calculating resistance from
end bearing at toe/tip or wall friction/skin friction along pile surface or both. Based on
soil data, the ultimate load carrying capacity (Qu) is given by;

Qu = Ru + Rf
where;
Ru = Ultimate base resistance, Rf = Ultimate shaft resistance
Ru = Ap (1/2 D .Y. NY + Pd. Nq) = Ap Nc Cp
Ap = cross-sectional area of pile tip, in m2;
D = diameter of pile shaft, in m
Y = effective unit weight of the soil, in t/ m3
Nq & Ny= bearing capacity factors depending upon the angle of internal friction
Nc = bearing capacity factor, usually taken as 9
Cp = average cohesion at pile tip, in t/ m2
Pd = effective overburden pressure at pile tip in t/ m2

Rf = ∑(Ks.Pdi.tan δ)Asi +∑(α.c.As) Asi

Ks = coefficient of earth pressure

PDi = effective overburden pressure for the ith layer, in t/m2 along the embedment of pile
for the layer
δ = angle of wall friction between pile and soil in degrees. It may be taken equal to
angle of internal friction of soil
Asi = surface area of pile shaft in m2
α = adhesion factor
c = average cohesion in t/m2 throughout the embedded length of pile

UPLIFT CAPACITY OF PILES IN SOIL

The Ultimate uplift capacity may be calculated with the expression of shaft
resistance/skin friction only, of the static formulae for compression loads and applying a
reduction factor of 0.70 on the same. The weight of pile shall also be taken as acting
against uplift (Clause 709.3.6.2 of IRC: 78-2014).

LATERAL LOAD CAPACITY

The Lateral Load Capacity of Pile is computed in accordance with Clause 6.5.2 of
IS: 2911 (Part 1/Sec 2)-2010.
The unsupported length is calculated by considering the difference between the Cut-off
level and maximum Scour Level/Liquefiable level.
