vide work order no. CO/WO/BEHU/02 and date 10/05/2023 This report presents the details of
Geotechnical investigations carried out and data obtained from various field and laboratory
tests, their presentation in graphical form.
PURPOSE OF STUDY
The overall purposes of this study are to conduct a geotechnical investigation to access
the stratigraphy and to develop geotechnical recommendations for foundation design for
the various structures planned along the alignment.
To accomplish these purposes, the study was conducted in the following phases:
i. Drilling boreholes at various structures locations to depths as specified or as per
instruction given at site in order to evaluate the stratigraphy at the site, and to collect
soil & water samples for laboratory testing.
ii. Testing selected soil samples in the laboratory to determine pertinent index and
engineering properties; and
iii. Analyzing all field and laboratory data to develop geotechnical recommendations for
foundations of the various structures to be constructed.
SCOPE OF WORK
a) Drilling bore holes by Rotary drilling up to the specified depth as per IS code of practice
and as per the direction of the Engineer-in-Charge. Beyond refusal strata drilling using
NX bit up to specified depth as per IS code of practice and as per the direction of the
Engineer-in- Charge.
b) Conducting Standard Penetration tests in the bore holes at regular intervals of 1.50m or
wherever possible as per IRC/IS Code of Practice.
c) Collecting undisturbed soil samples / core samples from the bore holes at regular
intervals or change of strata or wherever possible as per IRC/ IS Code of Practice.
d) Recording of water table level in the bore holes after completion of borehole.
Summary of Field Work at Chainage- 201+674
Seismicity in India is categorized in India into following four zones, Zone II: seismically
less active, zone III: moderately active, Zone IV: highly active, while the zone V
represents highest seismicity. The area under study and its surroundings are seismically
less active (mostly in seismic zone II). In seismic design zone factor, z of 0.10 is
recommended.

The corrected SPT blow count is represented by N1(60) for hammer efficiency of 60
percent and is evaluated from the expression below
N1(60) = N C60 .CN
Where,
N = field SPT count
C60 = CE x CBD x CRL x CSS= Correction factors for SPT configuration
CN = Correction for Overburden pressure limited to 1.70
CN = (Pa/ ) 0.5
Pa = 1 Atmospheric pressure = 10t/sqm
= Vertical effective stress at the depth of SPT
CE = For SPT conducted as per IS 2131-1981, the energy delivered to the drill rod is
about 60 percent may be assumed as 1.
The effect of borehole diameter is taken into account using factor CBD
For different rod lengths, the rod length correction factor CRL

<3 0.75
3-4 0.80
4-6 0.85

The correction factor CSS for different sampling methods is taken 1.1 for Sampler
without liners.
The presence of Fines Content (FC) in percent can also result in an increase of cyclic
resistance of soils. For the presence of fines, the SPT value is to be modified to
N1(60)cs as follows –
N1(60) cs=α+β*(N1(60))
For Fine Content<=5, α =0 and β =1
For (Fine Content>5 and <35), α = EXP ((1.76-(190/FC2)) and β = (0.99+ (FC1.5/1000)
The above expression is valid only for earthquakes with magnitude of 7.5. For
earthquakes with different magnitudes, the calculated CRR 7.5 is to be corrected by
Where,
The correction for high overburden stresses K is required when overburden pressure
is high (depth>15m) and using the following equation:
)(f-1)
Where, ’vo effective overburden pressure and Pa atmospheric pressure are measured
in the Same units and f is an exponent and its value depends on the relative density Dr.
for Dr =40%- 60%, f=0.8-0.7 and for Dr =60%-80%, f=0.7-0.6.
The correction for static shear stresses Kα is required only for sloping ground and shall
be assumed 1.0 otherwise.
Cyclic Stress Ratio (CSR)
The cyclic stress ratio at a particular depth can be calculated as
rd = Shear stress reduction coefficient to adjust for flexibility of the soil profile
As per IRC 2017: Sp-114
The factor rd can be evaluated for any depth z from the following expression
rd = 1.0 - .00765z for z ≤ 9.15 m
rd= 1.174 – 0.0267z for 9.15m < z ≤ 20.00m
Where, z = depth below the ground surface in meters
To Evict the Depth limitation of 20.00m, we have calculated the Shear stress reduction
coefficient rd
As per – T. F. Blake (1996) approximated the value by the following equation-
rd

Sl. No. Borehole Number
Depth below EGL (m) of Borehole (m)
where:
QNet Ultimate = net Ultimate bearing capacity of soil, based on the shear failure
criterion.
c = cohesion intercept,
q = overburden pressure
B = Width of Foundation
Appropriate values have been substituted into the bearing capacity equation given
above to compute the safe net bearing capacity. The values have been checked to
determine the settlement of the foundation under the safe bearing pressure. The
allowable bearing pressure has been taken as the lower of the two values computed
from the bearing capacity shear failure criterion as well as that computed from the
tolerable settlement criterion.
In predominantly granular soils, settlement analysis has been performed based on the
SPT values in accordance with Clause 9.1.4 of IS 8009 (Part 1) - 1976 Fig.9.
Analysis for allowable bearing capacity on rock has been done by the following
four methods.
a) Based on Classification of Rock as per Table-2 of IS: 12070: Satisfies both Shear
and Settlement Criterion (For preliminary assessment)
Massive crystalline bedrock including granite, diorite, gneiss, trap rock 1000
Analysis has been carried out using the RMR also known as Geo-mechanics
classification by considering various parameters such as uni-axial compressive strength,
RQD, spacing and condition of discontinuities and ground water condition. The
correlation between the RMR value and allowable pressure has been given in Table –3
IS: 12070. This will ensure settlement of raft foundation to be less than 12 mm
Classification No I II III IV V
The RMR for use in Table should be the average within a depth below foundation level
equal to the width of foundation, provided the RMR is fairly uniform within the depth. If
the upper part of the rock, within a depth of about one fourth of the width of foundation, is
of lower quality the value of this part should be used or the inferior rock should be
removed. Since these values are based on limiting the settlement, they should not be
increased if the foundation is embedded into the rock.
For Calculating SBC, Highly weathered / highly fractured rock (HWR) with low core
recoveries and almost Nil RQD shall be considered as Hard Soil as per IRC 78, Clause
706.3.1.1.2.
Axial load carrying capacity of pile is initially determined by calculating resistance from
end bearing at toe/tip or wall friction/skin friction along pile surface or both. Based on
soil data, the ultimate load carrying capacity (Qu) is given by;
Qu = Ru + Rf
where;
Ru = Ultimate base resistance, Rf = Ultimate shaft resistance
Ru = Ap (1/2 D .Y. NY + Pd. Nq) = Ap Nc Cp
Ap = cross-sectional area of pile tip, in m2;
D = diameter of pile shaft, in m
Y = effective unit weight of the soil, in t/ m3
Nq & Ny= bearing capacity factors depending upon the angle of internal friction
Nc = bearing capacity factor, usually taken as 9
Cp = average cohesion at pile tip, in t/ m2
Pd = effective overburden pressure at pile tip in t/ m2
The Ultimate uplift capacity may be calculated with the expression of shaft
resistance/skin friction only, of the static formulae for compression loads and applying a
reduction factor of 0.70 on the same. The weight of pile shall also be taken as acting
against uplift (Clause 709.3.6.2 of IRC: 78-2014).
The Lateral Load Capacity of Pile is computed in accordance with Clause 6.5.2 of
IS: 2911 (Part 1/Sec 2)-2010.
The unsupported length is calculated by considering the difference between the Cut-off
level and maximum Scour Level/Liquefiable level.
