Moreover, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to my industrial supervisor, Ms.


Say Siew Hoon, for her invaluable guidance and counsel throughout my training. Her wealth of
knowledge in polymer has greatly enriched my learning experience. I am also indebted to my
colleagues who collaborated with me and generously shared their expertise, providing me with
insights beyond what textbooks could offer.

Furthermore, I extend my thanks to Dr. Umairah, the coordinator of the BSK industrial
training program, and to Dr. Nazi, my university supervisor, for their continuous support and
guidance during my industrial stint.

Lastly, I am grateful to my friends and family for their unwavering encouragement


throughout my six-month internship. To all who have supported and assisted me, your
guidance, advice, and encouragement have been invaluable in shaping my future endeavors in

ABSTRACT

This report concluded my 24-week industrial training experience at Ecolite


Biotechnology SDN. BHD., under the supervision of Ms. Say Siew Hoon, the
Operation Division Head. The training provided a comprehensive insight into
production management and quality assurance practices within the company.
Commencing with an informative briefing by HR and an introduction to company
operations by Ms. Say, I was immersed in various tasks throughout the internship. My
responsibilities included managing production trial runs and pilot scale productions,
involving meticulous planning, execution, and documentation to refine product
formulations and optimize processes. Additionally, I spearheaded initiatives to
standardize production capacities, contributing to operational efficiency improvement.
Furthermore, I received extensive training in Halal assurance, Good Manufacturing
Practice (GMP), and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), enhancing
my understanding of quality control processes and compliance within the
manufacturing industry. In conclusion, my internship at Ecolite Biotechnology was a
transformative experience that not only enhanced my technical skills but also facilitated
personal and professional growth. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to
applying my newfound knowledge and skills in future endeavors.

ABSTRAK

Laporan ini menyimpulkan pengalaman latihan industri saya selama 24 minggu di


Ecolite Biotechnology SDN. BHD., di bawah penyeliaan Puan Say Siew Hoon, Ketua
Bahagian Operasi. Latihan ini memberikan wawasan menyeluruh tentang pengurusan
pengeluaran dan amalan jaminan kualiti dalam syarikat. Bermula dengan taklimat yang
informatif oleh Jabatan Sumber Manusia dan pengenalan kepada operasi syarikat oleh
Puan Say, saya terlibat dalam pelbagai tugas sepanjang tempoh latihan. Tanggungjawab
saya termasuk menguruskan ujian pengeluaran dan pengeluaran skala percubaan,
melibatkan perancangan, pelaksanaan, dan dokumentasi yang teliti untuk
menyempurnakan formulasi produk dan mengoptimumkan proses. Selain itu, saya
memimpin inisiatif untuk menstandardkan kapasiti pengeluaran, menyumbang kepada
peningkatan kecekapan operasi. Selanjutnya, saya menerima latihan yang luas dalam
jaminan Halal, Amalan Pengeluaran Baik (GMP), dan Analisis Bahaya dan Kawalan
Kritikal (HACCP), meningkatkan pemahaman saya tentang proses kawalan kualiti dan
pematuhan dalam industri pembuatan. Kesimpulannya, latihan industri saya di Ecolite
Biotechnology adalah pengalaman yang berubah dan memperkaya, bukan sahaja
meningkatkan kemahiran teknikal saya tetapi juga memudahkan pertumbuhan peribadi
dan profesional saya. Saya bersyukur atas peluang ini dan berharap untuk
mengaplikasikan pengetahuan dan kemahiran baru saya dalam usaha masa depan.

CHAPTER 1

COMPANY BACKGROUND

1.1 COMPANY PROFILE

Ecolite Biotech Sdn. Bhd. has its roots in a simple yet profound desire to help
people lead healthier lives. It all began with a belief in the transformative power of
nourishment to bring the body into balance and provide the energy needed for a
fulfilling life. This belief inspired the founders to make nourishment accessible to
everyone, especially those seeking simple, convenient, and affordable options for their
daily well-being. Based in Malaysia for over two decades, Ecolite has become a trusted
name in health and wellness. Its manufacturing facility in Batu Pahat, Johor, equipped
with state-of-the-art technology and stringent quality control measures, ensures that
products meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy. With certifications including
GMP, HACCP, MeSTI, VHM, and Halal, Ecolite guarantees the integrity and purity of
its products. From carefully selected suppliers to rigorous testing at every stage of the
supply chain, the company is committed to preserving the goodness of its products from
farm to table.

In 2001, the company established GH Health Products Manufacturing Sdn Bhd,
becoming an OEM manufacturer. This move allowed Ecolite to broaden its product line
to include drinks and bee products. By 2004, Ecolite Pharma Sdn Bhd was formed to
market house brands across Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. A
significant milestone came in 2007 when GH Health Product Manufacturing Sdn Bhd
was renamed Ecolite Bioetech Manufacturing Sdn Bhd. This marked a pivotal moment
as Ecolite became Malaysia’s first bird’s nest processing company. With new bottling
lines and a state-of-the-art facility, Ecolite solidified its position in the market.

Expansion continued in 2010 with an office in Guangzhou to tap into the


growing Chinese market. Awards and recognition followed, including the Best Halal
Product Award, showcasing Ecolite’s commitment to quality and innovation.
Establishing Ecolite Distribution Sdn Bhd in 2011 further strengthened the company’s
marketing strategy. By 2013, Ecolite had expanded its distribution network, reaching
pharmacies and hypermarkets with popular products like Pi Pa Gao and essence drinks.
The company’s dedication to customer satisfaction led to the introduction of product
customization services in 2013. This focus on meeting customer demands set Ecolite
apart in the industry. In 2015, Ecolite opened its first concept store in Times Square,
Penang, offering customers a unique shopping experience. The following year saw the
launch of The Joy of Life collagen drink, adding to Ecolite’s diverse range of products.

Starting with the edible bird's nest, Ecolite embarked on a journey to share its
wisdom and knowledge through easy-to-understand formulas and educational
resources. Initially distributing products among local suppliers, the demand quickly
grew, leading the company to establish its own manufacturing plant to meet mass
production needs, particularly for ready-to-eat bird's nest products.

Over time, Ecolite has expanded its product range to include over 300 varieties,
spanning from bird's nest to tonics, essences, and formulated herbs, all inspired by
nature. With a heritage rooted in ancestral practices and bolstered by modern scientific
understanding, the company is committed to sourcing the highest quality ingredients for
its products.

Ecolite Biotech Sdn.Bhd is a subsidiary of Sunzen Biotech Berhad. The
Sunzen Sunzen Group began in 1998, focusing on animal health. After 20 years of
learning and researching, it offers solutions benefiting both people and animals. Its
business covers biotechnology, bird’s nest exports, human wellness, animal health, and
financial services. Its goal is to become a leading force in animal health, human
wellness, and financial solutions worldwide.

Logo of Ecolite was inspired by the resilient bamboo plant, embodies the

Ecolite has expanded its product line to include 300 different varieties, ranging

from bird’s nest extracts, tonics, and essences to carefully crafted herbal blends, all
inspired by nature. Its heritage, rooted in traditional herbal practices and complemented
by modern scientific advancements, drives people to source only the most authentic
ingredients. Ecolite’s goal is to support individuals' journey to optimal nourishment at
every stage of life.

Central to approach is a dedication to leveraging our expertise in herbal

nourishment to offer a wide range of products. These include bird’s nest extracts, The
Joy of Life collagen drink, Pu Yao Jing tonic, essence of chicken and fish, Pi Pa Gao
cough syrup, Bai Foong Wan, as well as various food supplements and dried herbs. Our
annual production capacity reflects our commitment to meeting demand, with Ecolite
Biotech capable of producing 180,000 units of tonic series, 540,000 bottles of Pipagao,
3,000,000 sachets of boot sticks, and an impressive 13,200,000 bottles of Bird’s Nest
Drinks.

The Collagen Bird’s Nest Drink with Lychee & Rose Syrup combines bird’s nest, rock

CHAPTER 2

PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

2.1 INTRODUCTION

The Production Development Department was founded in October 2023 as a newly


established division. Presently, there are no staff members assigned to this department.

The Production Development Department has a crucial role in a company. This


department focus on making production processes better in various ways. They conduct
research to find new and improved methods, develop new technologies, and enhance
efficiency and quality. They also work on improving existing processes, making them
more streamlined and productive. This department also analyze production costs to find
ways to save money while maintaining quality. Lastly, the Production Development
Department plays a vital role in driving innovation, improving efficiency, and
maintaining competitiveness within the company.

2.2 FUNCTION OF PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

The production development department plays a crucial role in identifying and


proposing opportunities for enhancing production resources, often engaging in projects
aimed at improving production processes. Additionally, they are tasked with overseeing
all aspects of production trial runs and pilot-scale productions, which involve
significant changes in product formulation, machinery, and processing steps. This
includes reviewing risk assessments, ensuring proper management of production
resources, and facilitating pre- and post-production meetings to clarify responsibilities.
They also verify trial run outcomes, address any non-conformances promptly, and
obtain necessary approvals. Moreover, the department is responsible for managing trial
run samples and updating relevant documents accordingly. Another key function is to
standardize production processes and estimate production capacities, ensuring
efficiency and resource optimization. They also contribute to planning departmental
training and maintaining company documentation systems. Through these functions, the
production development department contributes to the continuous improvement and
operational excellence of the organization's manufacturing processes.

CHAPTER 3

ACTIVITIES AND PROJECT

3.1 ACTIVITY

3.1.1 WORK TASK

Throughout the industrial training which last for 24 weeks starting from 4th March until
16th August at Ecolite Biotechnology SDN.BHD. I was supervised under Ms. Say Siew
Hoon who is the Operation Division Head. When I first enter the company on the first
day of reporting, I have joined the briefing conducted by HR to introduce the company.
Ms. Say had introduce the operation of the company.

On the next day, my supervisor, Ms. Say briefed me some introductions about company
and tour guide me around the office and the production site.

During my internship, I undertook the responsibility of managing all production trial


runs and pilot scale productions involving new products, changes in product
formulations, machinery, equipment, and processing steps. This encompassed
meticulously planning production trial runs, overseeing their execution, and
meticulously documenting and reporting the outcomes. Additionally, I took charge of
updating relevant work instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to
reflect any modifications resulting from these trials, ensuring streamlined and
standardized processes moving forward. For instance, I participated in a trial run
process, which involved testing different types of tea blends, experimenting with new
formulations for bird's nest products, and standardizing machinery and packaging for a
new product. Subsequently, I was tasked with writing a report on the trial run to
enhance both the process and the materials used.
Furthermore, I spearheaded efforts to standardize and optimize production capacities.
This involved comprehensively analyzing process flows and steps to identify areas for
improvement and standardization. By defining and standardizing production capacities
and yields, I contributed to enhancing operational efficiency and resource utilization.
Moreover, I systematically assessed machine capacities and limitations, enabling us to
make informed decisions regarding production planning and resource allocation.
Overall, through these initiatives, I played a pivotal role in enhancing production
efficiency, quality, and consistency within the organization. For example, I was
responsible for monitoring the packaging line to identify the root cause of the low
efficiency in operations. I also conducted calculations on the labeling machine rate to
optimize efficiency and meet the daily output targets. Finally, I provided
recommendations for enhancing efficiency in the process.

3.1.2 TRAINING

In a Halal assurance training program focused on food, participants delve into the
essential principles and practices crucial for ensuring that food products comply with
Islamic dietary laws. Throughout the training, individuals gain a comprehensive
understanding of Halal, which encompasses what is permissible according to Islamic
teachings. This includes an in-depth exploration of the Quranic and Hadith-based

guidelines regarding food consumption. Trainees become adept at discerning between
Halal (permissible) and Haram (prohibited) substances, as well as comprehending the
reasoning behind these classifications.

The training curriculum typically encompasses the entire spectrum of Halal assurance
processes, from the sourcing of ingredients to the packaging and distribution of finished
products. Participants learn about the meticulous requirements set forth by Halal
certification bodies and the stringent measures necessary to uphold Halal integrity at
every stage of food production. Emphasis is placed on implementing robust quality
control measures to prevent contamination with non-Halal components and ensuring
compliance with Halal standards and guidelines.

Additionally, trainees are educated on the significance of ethical and transparent


practices in Halal food production, including fair trade sourcing, humane treatment of
animals, and sustainable manufacturing processes. They also gain insights into auditing
techniques and procedures to assess and maintain compliance with Halal standards.
Throughout the training, the importance of clear and accurate labeling of Halal products
for consumer trust and confidence is underscored.

I also received training in both Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Hazard
Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), two vital frameworks in ensuring
product quality, safety, and compliance within the manufacturing industry.

GMP training provided a comprehensive understanding of the essential principles


governing the manufacturing process. It emphasized the importance of maintaining
consistent quality throughout production, covering areas such as facility cleanliness,
equipment calibration, personnel hygiene, and documentation practices. By adhering to
GMP standards, manufacturers can minimize the risk of contamination, ensure product
integrity, and meet regulatory requirements. This training instilled in me the

significance of meticulous attention to detail and adherence to standardized procedures
to uphold product quality and safety.

Similarly, the HACCP training focused on identifying and mitigating potential hazards
at critical points in the production process. It introduced a systematic approach to
hazard analysis, emphasizing the identification of biological, chemical, and physical
hazards that could compromise food safety. Through HACCP, I learned to establish
critical control points (CCPs), implement preventive measures, and develop robust
monitoring and verification procedures to ensure the effectiveness of food safety
controls. This training equipped me with the skills to conduct thorough hazard
assessments, develop HACCP plans, and respond effectively to deviations from critical
limits.

Together, GMP and HACCP training provide a comprehensive framework for ensuring
product quality, safety, and regulatory compliance within the manufacturing industry.
By integrating the principles of GMP and HACCP into daily operations, companies can
minimize the risk of product recalls, protect consumer health, and maintain trust in their
brands. These training experiences have not only enhanced my understanding of quality
management but also equipped me with valuable skills that are essential for ensuring
the integrity and safety of manufactured products.

3.1.3 EVENT

This week, on March 9th, our company is having its annual dinner at Black Donut Villa
in Batu Pahat. All staff members are invited to join in. This event marks the
achievements of the past year. There will be tasty food, fun activities like games, and a
lucky draw. The dinner isn't just about having a good time; it's also about bringing
everyone closer together. By spending time together in a relaxed setting, it helps us feel
more like a team.

Our company organized an event to celebrate Hari Raya on April 22nd where we
gathered for a communal meal featuring traditional Malay dishes like nasi biryani and
kuih melayu. After the feast, a guessing game was played where participants had to
identify different types of kuih melayu. This activity brought joy and unity as we shared
delicious food and enjoyed friendly competition. It was a wonderful way to honor the
festive spirit and create lasting memories with colleagues.

3.1.4 INSTRUMENT

• pH meter calibration

A pH meter is an instrument used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a


solution. It provides a numerical value known as the pH, which indicates the
concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution. pH meters consist of a probe or
electrode that detects changes in hydrogen ion concentration and translates them into a
pH value, typically displayed on a digital screen.

Calibration of a pH meter is crucial because it ensures the accuracy and reliability


of the measurements obtained. Over time, pH meters can drift from their calibrated state
due to factors such as electrode aging, environmental conditions, or exposure to certain
substances. Calibration involves adjusting the pH meter to accurately read known pH
standards, typically pH 4.01, pH 7.00, and pH 10.01 solutions. By calibrating the pH
meter before use and periodically thereafter, users can trust the accuracy of their pH
measurements, leading to more reliable experimental results and informed decision-
making.

• Calibration Hand Held refractometer

A handheld refractometer is a portable device used to measure the refractive index

of a substance, often used to determine the concentration of dissolved solids, such as


sugars, in a liquid sample. To test Brix (a measurement of sugar concentration), a small
amount of the sample is placed on the refractometer's measuring surface. The light
passing through the sample is refracted, and the refractometer provides a reading
corresponding to the Brix value, indicating the sugar content. Calibration is crucial for
ensuring accurate measurements. This involves adjusting the refractometer to a known
standard, typically distilled water or a solution with a known refractive index, to ensure
precise readings. Regular calibration helps maintain the accuracy of the refractometer's
measurements over time.

• Chlorine test

This technique employs diethyl-p-phenylene diamine (DPD) powder, which reacts

with residual chlorine in water. By shaking the mixture, we ensure that DPD fully reacts
with the chlorine present. Subsequently, we use a colorimeter to analyze the sample,
providing a measurement of chlorine concentration in milligrams per liter (mg/l).

Higher chlorine levels in water can affect food in several ways. Chlorine is commonly
used as a disinfectant in water treatment to kill bacteria and other pathogens. However,
when present in excess amounts, chlorine can impart undesirable tastes and odors to
food and beverages. It may also react with organic compounds in food, forming
potentially harmful byproducts such as chloramines. Additionally, chlorine residues on
food surfaces can degrade food quality and safety if not properly rinsed off. Therefore,

ensuring appropriate chlorine levels in water used for food preparation is crucial to
maintain food quality and safety standards.

• Leak and Seal Strength Tester

The seal strength testing method primarily assesses the mechanical strength or bond of
a seal between two surfaces. It entails exerting a controlled force on the sealed area
until the seal ruptures, then measuring the force needed to separate the surfaces. Seal
strength testing is regarded as a destructive method since it involves breaking the seal
during the evaluation process.

3.2 PROJECT

3.2.1 TEST WITH DIFFERENT TYPE OF TEA BEG

The company is currently in the testing stage for a new product, which is tea. Various
tea bags are being tested as packaging options to determine which one is the most
suitable and practical for the tea. This testing process involves evaluating different tea
bag designs to assess their effectiveness and suitability for the product. The goal is to
select the tea bag that offers the best combination of functionality, convenience, and
aesthetic appeal to enhance the overall tea experience for consumers.

Procedure

1. The different type of formula will fill in the different type of filter bags which
are 19H &20P. Using the cup of diameter 3.5cm to fill 15g +/- 1g powder into
filter bag.

2. Arrange the filter bag into plastic.

3. When the powder left in hopper became less, required manual filling the powder
into the cup to prevent underfilling.

4. Transfer the finished goods to (Product development department) PDE for


inspection.

Conclusion

The 19H tea bag is selected for its enhanced beauty and durability, ensuring it lasts
longer and is less prone to breakage when brewing tea.

3.2.2 TEST OF MACHINE FOR NEW FORMULATION

The first objective is to ascertain whether the new formulation, labeled as 24/A19, is
compatible with the existing Boostick machine. This involves a thorough examination
and testing process to ensure that the machine can effectively handle and process the
new formulation without encountering any compatibility issues or disruptions to its
functionality. The second objective is to validate the filling settings of the Boostick
machine. This validation process entails meticulous assessment and verification of the
machine's filling parameters to ensure accuracy and consistency in dispensing the new
formulation. By validating these settings, we aim to optimize production efficiency and
maintain the quality standards of the final product.

Process

1. Machine setup and adjust

4. Start to package with paste and the sachet was weighted.

5. The sample was transferred to PDE.

Adjustment several reason:

Conclusion

The Boostick machine able to do fill of Bazhen paste (24/A19/A04) with filled weight
12g+/-0.6g. Due to long time no operation of machine, the machine required long time
for machine adjust and turning. Besides, the used alunium foil is aging, increase the
machine adjust time.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 CONCLUSION

During my 24-week internship at Ecolite Biotechnology SDN. BHD., under the


guidance of Ms. Say Siew Hoon, the Operation Division Head, I underwent a
transformative learning experience that significantly enriched my understanding of
production management and quality assurance practices. From the very first day, I was
warmly welcomed and immersed in the company's operations, beginning with an
insightful briefing conducted by HR and an introduction to the company's operations by
Ms. Say herself.

Throughout the internship, I assumed various responsibilities, notably managing


production trial runs and pilot scale productions. This involved meticulous planning,
execution, and documentation of trial runs, which played a pivotal role in refining
product formulations, machinery settings, and processing procedures.

Moreover, I spearheaded initiatives to standardize and optimize production capacities,


conducting comprehensive analyses of process flows and machine capacities. By
defining and standardizing production capacities and yields, I contributed to enhancing
operational efficiency and resource utilization within the organization.

In addition to hands-on experience, I underwent extensive training in Halal assurance,


GMP, and HACCP, which equipped me with essential knowledge and skills crucial for
ensuring product quality, safety, and compliance within the manufacturing industry.
Participating in company events such as the annual dinner and Hari Raya celebration
further reinforced the sense of camaraderie and unity among colleagues, fostering a
positive work environment.

Furthermore, I gained practical experience with various quality testing instruments,


such as pH meters and chlorine tests, which enhanced my understanding of quality
control processes.

In the final phase of my internship, I was involved in testing different tea bag designs
for a new product, further expanding my practical knowledge and skills in product
development and testing.

Overall, my internship at Ecolite Biotechnology was an invaluable learning experience


that not only enhanced my technical skills but also fostered personal and professional
growth. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the company's success and
look forward to applying the knowledge and skills gained during my internship in my
future career endeavors.

4.2 RECOMMENDATION

1. List out the clearly sop to reduce the waste time in the production.
2. To optimize the arrangement of tasks to enhance efficiency for the packaging
line.
3. Scheduling maintenance checks on labeling machine to ensure they are
functioning.
