AUDITORIUM DESIGN

Auditorium is a space
designed to host a range of
audio and /or visual
performances and their
audiences.
Functions
● Performances

● Concerts

● Lectures, Presentations.
Auditoriums come in many shapes and
sizes, but designs typically consist of three
main components:

● House - The main seating area, Aisle,


Gallery
● Stage - Proscenium, Apron, Stage ,
Back stage
● Support spaces - Lobby, Ticket
counter, green room, black box
theater, Orchestra pit, Scenery
construction & Storage space,
Control room and Toilets

in a concave shape toward the central
arena increases intimacy between
performer and audience.

Bring the audience up close and personal,


but limits the usage of a stage to mostly
speech-related activity.

Proscenium Stage
Resembles an end stage, with the
addition of the proscenium arch

The audience directly faces the stage


and views only one side of the scene.

Horseshoe & Thrust stage

For a greater sense of intimacy and


drama, which is achieved by seating
the audience closer and on three sides
of the stage.

Arena stage

A central stage surrounded by the


audience on all sides, these styles of
stage are some of the best for
sightlines.
Standards
● The floor area of the house including gangways, excluding the stage should have 0.6 - 0.9
sq.m per person.
● The volume per person should be between 3.5 - 5.5 cu.m
● Visual distance - Maximum of 20 m from centre of stage for performances where facial
expressions are critical. Maximum of 30 m for musical performances.
● The average height may vary from 6 m for small halls to 7.5 m for large halls.
● As an empirical rule the angle of elevation of the inclined floor in an auditorium should not
be less than 8 degrees(5”-6”).
● The maximum number of seats per row is 22 if there are gangways at both sides and 11 for
gangway at one end.
● The width of a seat should be between 45 cm and 56 cm.
● The minimum row to row spacing is 850mm -900mm.
● The minimum width of the main aisle is 1.2m and cross aisle is 1 m.
● At Least 1% of seating for different abled persons with a minimum of 2 seats.
