1. Introduction

Fire-rated doors are crucial elements in building safety systems, designed to prevent the
spread of fire and smoke, thus protecting lives and property. This Standard Operating
Procedure (SOP) outlines the comprehensive process of fabricating fire-rated doors in
compliance with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certification standards. Following this
SOP ensures that fire-rated doors meet stringent requirements for fire resistance,
structural integrity, and performance, as established by UL.

2. Scope

This SOP covers all aspects of fire-rated door fabrication, including material selection,
design and engineering, fabrication processes, quality control measures, documentation
requirements, testing and inspection procedures, and packaging and shipping protocols.
By adhering to this SOP, fabricators can ensure the consistent production of high-quality
fire-rated doors that meet UL certification standards.

3. Material Selection

3.1. Steel Slats or Sheets: Choose high-quality steel slats or sheets suitable for
fabricating fire-rated door curtains. The material must comply with UL 10B/C standards for
fire resistance and structural integrity. Ensure that the steel has appropriate corrosion
resistance properties.

3.2. Side Guides and Bottom Bar: Select heavy-duty steel for side guides and bottom
bars to ensure durability and fire resistance, meeting UL 10B/C requirements. The steel
should have sufficient strength to support the weight of the door and withstand the impact
of fire.

3.3. End Plates: Use steel end plates for securely anchoring the door assembly to the
building structure, providing stability and safety. Ensure that the end plates are thick
enough to withstand the forces exerted on them during operation and in the event of a fire.

4. Design and Engineering

4.1. Fire Rating Requirements: Determine the required fire rating for the fire-rated door
based on project specifications and local building codes. Consult UL standards to ensure
compliance with fire resistance requirements. Consider factors such as occupancy type,
building height, and fire compartmentation requirements.

4.2. Dimensional Specifications: Customize the dimensions of the fire-rated door to fit
the specific door opening requirements. Consider factors such as width, height, slat
thickness, side guide dimensions, and bottom bar dimensions. Ensure that the door
dimensions comply with UL standards and building codes.

4.3. Motorization Options: Determine whether the door will be manually operated or
motorized. If motorized, select an electric motor drive system compliant with UL 325
standards. Consider factors such as door size, frequency of use, and power source
availability when selecting motorization options.

5. Fabrication Process

5.1. Cutting and Shaping: Cut steel slats or sheets to the required dimensions using
precision cutting equipment. Use cutting techniques such as shearing, sawing, or laser
cutting to achieve clean and accurate cuts. Shape slats as per design specifications,
ensuring uniformity and accuracy.

5.2. Welding and Assembly: Weld steel slats or sheets together to form the door curtain.
Use welding processes such as MIG (Metal Inert Gas) or TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas)
welding to achieve strong and durable welds. Weld side guides, bottom bars, and end
plates to the curtain assembly, ensuring secure connections.

5.3. Drilling and Mounting: Drill holes in the door components for hardware installation.
Use precision drilling equipment to achieve accurate hole placement. Mount hardware
such as hinges, locks, and handles according to design requirements and UL
specifications.

6. Quality Control Measures

6.1. Visual Inspection: Conduct visual inspections throughout the fabrication process to
ensure that components meet quality standards. Check for defects, irregularities, and
dimensional accuracy. Inspect welds for cracks, porosity, or incomplete fusion.

6.2. Dimensional Checks: Use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers,
and tape measures to verify dimensional accuracy of door components. Ensure that
dimensions match design specifications and UL requirements. Measure critical
dimensions such as door width, height, and thickness.

6.3. Welding Inspection: Perform weld inspections to assess the quality of welds and
ensure structural integrity. Use non-destructive testing methods such as visual inspection,

dye penetrant testing, or ultrasonic testing to detect weld defects. Verify weld penetration,
strength, and absence of defects.

7. Documentation and Record Keeping

7.1. Material Certifications: Maintain records of material certifications for steel slats,
sheets, and other components, demonstrating compliance with UL standards. Keep
copies of material test reports, mill certificates, and supplier documentation.

7.2. Fabrication Records: Document fabrication activities, including cutting, welding,

assembly, and quality control checks. Record dates, personnel involved, and inspection
results. Use standardized forms or digital documentation systems to ensure consistency
and accuracy.

7.3. UL Certification Documentation: Keep copies of UL certification documents for all

components used in the fabrication process. Ensure that the fire-rated door assembly
complies with UL standards. Maintain records of UL certification numbers, expiration
dates, and compliance statements.

8. Testing and Inspection

8.1. Third-Party Inspection: Arrange for third-party inspection by UL-approved agencies

to validate compliance with UL certification requirements. Cooperate with inspectors and
provide access to fabrication facilities and documentation. Prepare the fabricated door
assembly for inspection according to UL guidelines.

9. Packaging and Shipping

9.1. Protective Packaging: Package fabricated fire-rated doors securely to prevent

damage during transit. Use suitable packaging materials such as cardboard, foam, or
wooden crates to provide cushioning and protection. Consider factors such as door size,
weight, and fragility when selecting packaging materials.

9.2. Shipping Documentation: Prepare shipping documentation, including packing lists,

invoices, and shipping labels. Ensure that packages are labeled with handling instructions
and compliance certifications. Include copies of UL certification documents with the
shipment for reference.
