The Brick Manufacturing Process

WRITE YOUR ANSWERFOR TASK 1 BELOW THIS LINE

The diagram above illustrates the process of brick manufacturing for the building industry. Overall, the process
consists of seven stages, starting from excavating clay by a digger and ending with transporting the bricks.
Initially, the clay is extracted from the earth using an excavator and then put on a roller to be fragmented into
smaller chunks. Subsequently, sand and water are added to the pile of clay, and the mixture is shaped into
bricks using a wire cutter or a mold. After that, the bricks are dried in an oven within 24 to 48 hours.
Moving forward to the next phase, the bricks go through a process of heating and cooling that consists of three
steps. Firstly, they are exposed to medium temperatures of 200oC to 980oC within kilns. Secondly, it is
heated up to 1300oC, followed by a cooling step in a chamber for 49 to 72 hours. Ultimately, the bricks are
packaged and delivered by trucks.

TASK 2: FOOD ADDITIVES - ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic.

Do the dangers derived from the use of chemicals in food production and preservation outweigh the advantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

You should write at least 250 words.

WRITE YOUR ANSWER FOR TASK 2 BELOW THIS LINE

The use of food additives is crucial for industries in the era of global trade. These chemicals are needed to
ensure products are consumable for a longer period. While it is reasonable to consider adding chemicals
beneficial, I believe that it possesses danger to human health if it is consumed consistently.
There are several advantages in using chemicals for food production. Firstly, access to foods is easy for all
social levels as they are affordable. Additives increase efficiency in producing foods which make them
cheap. Secondly, some additives add flavor to foods. Consumers will enjoy them as it feels like eating tasty
foods that cost more.
On the other hand, the most concerning disadvantage of chemical use in food production is the potential harm to
human health. Additive substances that are contained in foods can lead to serious illnesses for consumers.
For example, sodium which is used in instant foods to enhance flavor and extend shelf life can lead to
conditions such obesity and its comorbidities. Another disadvantage is the negative impact on the
environment that eventually leads to critical diseases. These additives are mostly made from petroleum-
based chemicals that can contaminate the air, water, and soil. As a result, people will suffer from allergies,
lung diseases, and other illnesses.
In conclusion, despite the fact that there are many advantages of using chemicals in food production, they do
not outweigh disadvantages such as health risks which is much more crucial. It is important to rule the use
of chemicals in foods so that the risk will not be imposed.
