SIMPLY SUPPORTED ONE-WAY

SLABS

DESIGN STEPS
1. Basic data
• L(longer) and B(shorter) (inside dimensions of room)
• Thickness of support
• Grades of concrete and steel
• Clear cover

2. Design factors
𝑋𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑥 700
=
𝑑 1100 + 0.87 ∗ 𝑓𝑦

𝑥𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑥 𝑥𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑥
𝑄𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 0.36 ∗ ∗ ቀ1 − 0.42 ∗ ቁ ∗ 𝑓𝑐𝑘
𝑑 𝑑

0.36 𝑓𝑐𝑘 𝑥𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑥

ptlim = 0.87 ∗ ∗ ∗ 100
𝑓𝑦 𝑑

3. Effective lengths
Lx = B + width of support/2
Ly = L + width of support/2
𝑙𝑦
Check: 𝑙𝑥 ≥ 2
Hence design as one-way slab.
4. Assumptions for the depth of slab
M.F = 1.5 "Assuming Pt = 0.35%, from Fig-4, Pg-38, IS
456-2000"
Assume dia. of bars (φ)

Therefore depth required for satisfy the deflection criteria,

For simply supported For Cantilever For Continuous

𝐿𝑥 𝐿𝑥 𝐿𝑥
𝑑= 𝑑= 𝑑=
20 ∗ 𝑀𝐹 7 ∗ 𝑀𝐹 26 ∗ 𝑀𝐹

D = d + clear cover + φ/2

5. Total factored load calculation

Self wt. = 25 KN/m3 x D

Assume F.F = 0.5 to 2 KN/m2 (Preferably 2)

Assume L.L from IS 875 Part 2 as follows:

Slab : Residential building : 2 to 3 KN/m2
Public building : 4 to 5 KN/m2
Roof: Accessible : 1.5 KN/m2
Non-accessible : 0.75 KN/m2

6. Effective shorter span Lxeff :

Lxeff = minimum of :
• c/c distance between supports
• Shorter span (B) + d
7. Maximum factored B.M. (Mu) and S.F. (Vu)
𝑤∗𝑙𝑥𝑒𝑓𝑓 2 𝑤∗𝑙𝑥𝑒𝑓𝑓
Mu = & Vu =
8 2

8. Required depth of slab

𝑀𝑢
𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑞 = ඨ
𝑄𝑙𝑖𝑚 ∗ 𝑏

Check : dprov > dreq

9. Area of main reinforcement (Ast)

0.5 ∗ 𝑓𝑐𝑘 ∗ 𝑏𝑑 4.6 ∗ 𝑀𝑢 ∗ 106

𝐴𝑠𝑡 = × {1 − ඨቈ1 − ቉}
𝑓𝑦 𝑓𝑐𝑘 ∗ 𝑏𝑑 2

𝜋∗∅2
4
Spacing required = *1000
𝐴𝑠𝑡,𝑟𝑒𝑞

Check for cracking : Spacing provided should not exceed :

• 3d
• 300 mm (whichever is min.)
Hence, spacing provided = min. of all above values

𝜋∗∅2
Astprovided = 4
*1000
𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑

𝐴𝑠𝑡
pt,provided = 1000∗𝑑 (i.e % of R/F provided for 1m width)
Ast,min = 0.12% of bD ( for HYSD bars)
= 0.15% of bD (for MS bars)
Check: Astprovided > Ast,min
Note: If this check does not satisfy then use Ast,min as Astprovided

10. Area of distribution steel

Astreq = 0.12% of bD ( for HYSD bars)
= 0.15% of bD (for MS bars)
Assume dia. of bars and spacing required
𝜋∗∅2
Spacing required = 4
*1000
𝐴𝑠𝑡,𝑟𝑒𝑞

Check for cracking : Spacing provided should not exceed :

• 5d
• 450 mm (whichever is min.)
Hence, spacing provided = min. of all above values

𝜋∗∅2
Astprovided = 4
*1000
𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑

11. Check for shear

√1+5𝛽−1 0.8∗𝑓𝑐𝑘
• τc = 0.85 * √(0.87 ∗ 𝑓𝑐𝑘) * where 𝛽 =
6∗𝛽 6.89∗𝑝𝑡
𝑉𝑢
• τv =
𝑏∗𝑑
• Actual τc = k*τc

Where k is given as per cl B-5.2.1.1,pg-84 of IS 456-2000

Check : τv < k* τc

NOTE: Slabs are generally found to be safe in shear. If in case it fails

in shear, increase the depth of slab to avoid design of shear
reinforcement.
