Q10
One part of the function y = f (x) varies directly as x and the other part varies directly as x2. When x = –1, y = –6
and when x = 1, y = 12.

(a) Find f (4). (4 marks)

(b) Find the coordinates of the intersection point(s) of the graph of y = f (x) and the straight line y = 120.
(2 marks)

Solution:

(a) From the question, y = k1x + k2x2, where k1 and k2 are non-zero constants.
When x = –1, y = –6.
 –6 = k1(–1) + k2(–1)2
–6 = –k1 + k2.......................................(1)
1M + 1A
When x = 1, y = 12.
 12 = k1(1) + k2(1)2
12 = k1 + k2...................................(2)
(1) – (2): – 18 = –2k1
k1 = 9
Substitute k1 = 9 into (1).
12 = 9 + k2
k2 = 3
 y = 9x + 3x2 1A
 f(x) = 9x + 3x2
 f(4) = 9(4) + 3(4)2 = 84 1A

(b) 120 = 9x + 3x2

x2 + 3x– 40 = 0
( x + 8 )( x – 5 ) = 0 1M

x = –8 or x = 5
 The coordinates of the intersection points are (5, 120) and (–8, 120). 1A
Q11
The table below shows the distribution of the ages of the members in a group, where a > 0, b > 0 and 𝑎 ≠ 𝑏.
The median of the ages of the members in the group is 23.5.

Age 22 23 24 25 26 27

Number of 1 14 a 1 b 10
members

(a) Find a and b. (2 marks)

(b) Write down the mode of the distribution. (1 mark)
(c) Find the interquartile range of the distribution. (2 marks)
(d) Five members now leave the group. It is found that the ages of these five members are all different and the
range of the distribution is decreased by one. Find
(i) the greatest possible median of the ages of the members in the group now,
(ii) the least possible mean of the ages of the members in the group now.
(3 marks)

Solution:
(a) ∵ Median = 23.5
∴ 1 + 14 = a + 1 + b + 10
4=a+b
1M + 1A
a = 1, b = 3
or
a = 3, b = 1
(b) Mode = 23 1A
(c) Q1 = 23 and Q3 = 27
∴ Interquartile range of the distribution = 27 – 23 = 4 1M + 1A
(d) (i) The ages of the five members are 22, 23, 24, 25, 26
After five members leaving the group,
Age 22 23 24 25 26 27
No. of a = 1, b = 3 0 13 0 0 2 10
members a = 3, b = 1 0 13 2 0 0 10

∴ Greatest possible median is 23. 1A

(ii) The ages of the five members are 22, 24, 25, 26, 27
After five members leaving the group,
Age 22 23 24 25 26 27 Mean
No. of a = 1, b = 3 0 14 0 0 2 9 24.68
members 1M
a = 3, b = 0 14 2 0 0 9 24.52

∴ Least possible mean is 24.52. 1A

Q12
The coordinates of the points A and B are (4, 9) and (−2, 1) respectively. Let P be a moving point in the
rectangular coordinate plane such that BP = AB. Denote the locus of P by .

(a) Find the equation of . (2 marks)

(b) It is given that the coordinates of the point C are (−12, 1).

(i) Does  pass through C? Explain your answer.

(ii) Find the distance between A and C.

(iii) D is a point lying on . Someone claims that the area of △ACD cannot exceed 130.
Is the claim correct? Explain your answer.

(5 marks)

Solution:
(a) The equation of  is
[ x − (−2)]2 + ( y − 1) 2 = [4 − (−2)]2 + (9 − 1) 2 1M
( x + 2)2 + ( y − 1) 2 = 100

x 2 + y 2 + 4 x − 2 y − 95 = 0 1A for correct
centre and radius

(b) (i) Note that (−12 + 2) 2 + (1 − 1) 2 = 100 .

∴  passes through C. 1A f.t.

(ii) AC = (−12 − 4) 2 + (1 − 9) 2 = 320 = 8 5 1A

(iii) The area of ACD reaches the maximum when

MD ⊥ AC, where M is the mid-point of AC.
Note that MD passes through B.

Q13

Let f ( x) = 3x 3 + ax 2 + bx + c , where a, b and c are constants. When f (x) is divided by 3 x 2 − 2 x + 2 , the

remainder is −16 x + 22. When f (x) is divided by x, the remainder is 20.

(a) Find a, b and c. (4 marks)

(b) Prove that x − 2 is a factor of f (x). (1 mark)

(c) Someone claims that all the roots of the equation f ( x ) = 0 are rational numbers. Is the claim correct?

Explain your answer. (2 marks)

Solution:
(a)  The remainder is 20 when f (x) is divided by x. 1M for Remainder Thm.
