Q10
One part of the function y = f (x) varies directly as x and the other part varies directly as x2. When x = –1, y = –6
and when x = 1, y = 12.
Solution:
(a) From the question, y = k1x + k2x2, where k1 and k2 are non-zero constants.
When x = –1, y = –6.
–6 = k1(–1) + k2(–1)2
–6 = –k1 + k2.......................................(1)
1M + 1A
When x = 1, y = 12.
12 = k1(1) + k2(1)2
12 = k1 + k2...................................(2)
(1) – (2): – 18 = –2k1
k1 = 9
Substitute k1 = 9 into (1).
12 = 9 + k2
k2 = 3
y = 9x + 3x2 1A
f(x) = 9x + 3x2
f(4) = 9(4) + 3(4)2 = 84 1A
x = –8 or x = 5
The coordinates of the intersection points are (5, 120) and (–8, 120). 1A
Q11
The table below shows the distribution of the ages of the members in a group, where a > 0, b > 0 and 𝑎 ≠ 𝑏.
The median of the ages of the members in the group is 23.5.
Age 22 23 24 25 26 27
Number of 1 14 a 1 b 10
members
Solution:
(a) ∵ Median = 23.5
∴ 1 + 14 = a + 1 + b + 10
4=a+b
1M + 1A
a = 1, b = 3
or
a = 3, b = 1
(b) Mode = 23 1A
(c) Q1 = 23 and Q3 = 27
∴ Interquartile range of the distribution = 27 – 23 = 4 1M + 1A
(d) (i) The ages of the five members are 22, 23, 24, 25, 26
After five members leaving the group,

No. of a = 1, b = 3 0 13 0 0 2 10
members a = 3, b = 1 0 13 2 0 0 10
(b) It is given that the coordinates of the point C are (−12, 1).
(iii) D is a point lying on . Someone claims that the area of △ACD cannot exceed 130.
Is the claim correct? Explain your answer.

(c) Someone claims that all the roots of the equation f ( x ) = 0 are rational numbers. Is the claim correct?
Solution:
(a) The remainder is 20 when f (x) is divided by x. 1M for Remainder Thm.
f (0) = 20
3(0) + a(0) + b(0) + c = 20

Let mx + n be the quotient when f (x) is divided by 3 x 2 − 2 x + 2 , where m and n
are constants.

f ( x) = (mx + n)(3x 2 − 2 x + 2) − 16 x + 22
3x3 + ax 2 + bx + 20 3mx3 + (3n − 2m) x 2 + (2m − 2n − 16) x + ( 2n + 22 )
By comparing the like terms on the L.H.S. and R.H.S., we have
3m = 3....................(1)
2n + 22 = 20...........(2)
From (1), m = 1
From (2), n = −1
a = 3 ( −1) − 2 (1)
= −5
b = 2 (1) − 2 ( −1) − 16
= −12
a = −5 and b = −12 1A for both correct
(b) f ( x) = 3 x 3 − 5 x 2 − 12 x + 20
f (2) = 3(2)3 − 5(2)2 − 12(2) + 20
