3.1 General
Design of a correctly sized and located cathodic protection system is vital to achieving the
required design life. Technical considerations shall be the principal factor for consideration but
where more than one technical solution is acceptable, economics also becomes important.
The distribution and quantity of anodes shall be determined by CP CONSULTANT, but shall be
kept to a minimum required to provide protection without local over-protection , whilst providing
optimum spacing .
Temporary anodes shall be connected to buried lines via above ground test stations in order to
facilitate easy monitoring and disconnection prior to commissioning of the permanent CP
systems.
·Duplex stainless steels are more susceptible to hydrogen induced stress cracking than carbon
steel. The protection criteria for pipelines made of DSS shall be determined on a case by case
basis, but shall not under any circumstance be more negative than the over protection limit given
in below indicated table.
·Pipeline attenuation calculations determine the pipeline current demand and spacing between
cathodic protection stations as required during the pipeline design life. The current densities
indicated below are the minimum design values . .
For the protection of pipelines with elevated operating temperatures the minimum design current ·
densities given below, shall be increased by 25% per 10 oc rise in temperature above 30 oc:
· The increase shall be compounded per 10 oc rise in temperature . .
Description of coating type . Current density (mA/m2) - 15-30 years of Pipeline life
The current densities given in above table-2 already include the current requirements due to
expected coating breakage during the design life of the pipeline.
Where a CP system is designed for installation on a pipeline which is in the vicinity of a foreign
pipeline, the design shall include features to minimise possible interaction . Design features to be
considered shall include the provision of supplementary anodes, facilities to allow resistive bonds
between the structures, selective positioning of material with the appropriate insulating properties
and selective positioning of the groundbed.
Well casings shall be protected by impressed current CP system . The minimum current
requirement for design purpose shall be determined by E Log I test. E Log I test shall be
conducted on one vertical well pad and one horizontal well pad .
The data determined from E Log I test shall form the basis for the CP design for all well casings
of the same type in the field, with suitable allowance made for any expected variation through
the field .
Prior to designing the cathodic protection system for the pipeline, a pre-design route survey shall
be carried out by CP CONSULTANT .
The survey shall include general information of the terrain along the pipeline route, .including:
• Visible relevant features and qrossings (main roads, overhead power lines, other
pipelines, wadis)
• All other information that is considered relevant to the design of a cathodic protection
system.
Soil resistivity measurements .shall be carried out alorig the route of the pipeline at pipeline
depth. The .number of measurements should be determined locally depending on the length of
the pipeline and with a maximum separation of 5km, but measurements should at least be
carried but when there are visual changes in soil characteristics at a maximum separation of
2kms .
For each type of soil, readings should be taken in at least two different locations. At each location
a minimum of 2 measurements shall be carried out. Soil resistivity measurements shall be made
using four terminal (Wenner) resistivity method .
When the soil resistivity measurements are used to locate suitable places for surface
groundbeds, the four terminal Wenner method shall also be used to determine the resisitvity at
greater depths (25m maximum).
For measurement of resistivity at depths greater than 25m the Schlumberger technique may be
used .
c) Soil investigation
If it may be assumed that corrosive conditions are present due to bacterial activity and sabkha
area, further chemical and bacterial soil analysis shall -be carried out. For test methods, refer to
BS 1377 parts 3 & 9.
d) Stray currents
CP CONSULTANT shall investigate possible sources of detrimental DC stray currents and

resources & energy
Stray currents shall be eliminated at the source by suitable insulation or other means. If this is
impossible other measures such as installation of a current drainage system shall be designed.
The presence of overhead lines shall also be identified. As a minimum , the length and separation
of parallelism(s), number of crossings, crossing angle(s) and voltage rating shall be recorded. CP
CONSULTANT shall also take into consideration the proposed 33KV OHL route layout in
Appendix- VII.
The following are essential part of survey for well casing CP design :-

out in accordance with NACE RP0169. The cables from the separate pipelines shall be brought
above ground and joined in a suitable test post.
The cathodic protection system shall comply with safety standards and regulations .
3.14 Electricallsolation
To avoid cathodic protection current flowing to structures other than those intended, electrical ·
separation may be necessary between different structures. This is in particular the case when
unprotected structures are in the sphere of influence of large impressed current systems or when
protected structures have different current demand due to different materials or coating types.
Surge arrestors required to prevent elevated voltages due to faults in adjacent electrical power
systems or lightning shall be of the spark gap type and shall be designed such that:
• The impulse breakdown voltage of the .electrodes is lower than that of the isolating joint

the spark gaps from moi.sture.
For regular monitoring of cathodic protection systems the equipment to be used shall meet the
following requirements :
3.16 Earthing
The pipeline under cathodic protection should be electrically isolated from common or plant
earthing systems to avoid a loss of current.
Electrical earthing of devices installed on the protected pipeline may be required for safety
reasons or pipeline earthing may be required to mitigate the effect of induced electrical voltages.
If electrical safety earthing is required, this shall be made compatible with the cathodic protection
system by installing polarization cells or diode circuits, suitably specified and rated for the
purpose, in the earthing circuit or by the installation of separate earthing electrodes, made of zinc
or galvanized steel, buried in low resistivity backfill and not in direct electrical continuity with
other earthing systems.
If pipeline earthing is to be installed to mitigate the effect of AC induced voltages on the pipeline
this should be done at the locations where the anticipated or measured voltages to ground are
highest and where the pipeline is exposed and can be touched by personnel.
