● It is arranged in order.
Examples of databases
● Address book
● Encyclopaedia
● Telephone directory
● Dictionary
● All contain information that is arranged in order.
Advantages of using a computer database
● Search the data very quickly
● Sort quickly into any order
● Easy to edit the data
● Can print out as many copies as you want
● Can attach data to an email and send to someone
● Can use it in mail merge letters
● Takes up less space than lots of paper records
Date Type :
Fields
● Fields contain items of information, such as:
○ First name
○ Surname
○ Date of birth
○ Tutor group
○ Telephone number
Field types
● Text fields
○ for letters, words and numbers
● Number fields
○ for numbers only
● Date files
○ for dates
Field Formats
● Text fields
○ must give the maximum number of characters
● Date fields
○ can be set for:
■ short dates – 13/01/02
■ medium dates – 13 Jan 02
■ long dates – 13 January 2002
A relational database is a type of database that
stores and provides access to data points that
are related to one another. Relational
databases are based on the relational model,
an intuitive, straightforward way of representing
data in tables
