CE 471: Water Resources Engineering-III

Quiz 2, 4th Year 2nd Semester, Section C, Fall 2020

Marks: 20 Time: 35 min (including uploading)

1. Distinguish between (i) mass water content and volumetric water content (ii) hygroscopic
water and capillary water. (4)
2. Explain why infiltration rate is high at the beginning but approaches to a constant value after
several hours of irrigation. (3)
3. After how many days it is necessary to irrigate the field, if: field capacity of the soil = 27.5%,
permanent wilting point = 12%, dry density of the soil = 1. 45 g/cm3, depth of root zone = D
cm, consumptive use rate of crop = x mm/day. Assume that the maximum allowable deletion
=50%. (6)
D = 70 and x = 7 for Student ID 17.01.03.114 to 17.01.03.144
D = 80 and x = 9 for student ID 17.01.03.145 to 17.01.03.167
D = 90 and x = 12 for the rest

4. Three piezometers were placed side by side at points A, B and C. The depths of A, B, and C
are 6, 12 and 20 m below the ground level. The pressure heads at these points are h1 m, h2
m and h3 m respectively. Calculate (i) the hydraulic gradients between A to B and between B
to C (ii) the hydraulic conductivity between B to C if the hydraulic conductivity between A to
B is 5 cm/day. (7)
h1 = 7.0, h2 = 14.0 and h3 = 22.5 for student ID 17.01.03.114 to 17.01.03.144
h1 = 7.5, h2 = 14.0 and h3 = 23.0 for student ID 17.01.03.145 to 17.01.03.167
h1 = 8.0, h2 = 13.5 and h3 = 21.0 for the rest
