Copper-is commonly used in carrying hot water pipes due to its excellent thermal
conductivity and resistance to corrosion. This means that it efficiently transfers heat and
is durable enough to withstand the high temperatures and pressures associated with hot
water systems. Additionally, copper is relatively lightweight and easy to work with,
making it a practical choice for plumbing applications.
DHW (Domestic Hot Water)- heated water used for purposes of washing, cooking,
bathing, etc. DHW is considered suitable for human consumption.
Domestic Hot Water (DHW)- delivers hot water to fixtures used by people at the sink,
shower, tub and any other appliance where water may contact humans.
Energy Factor (EF)- This metric measures a water heater’s overall efficiency by
comparing the amount of hot water produced per unit of fuel consumed over a typical
day.
Energy factor (EF)- is a measure of the system’s efficiency, with higher values being
more efficient. It takes into account the efficiency of heating the water, the standby
losses (lack of insulation), and losses from water circulating through the tanks and
inlet/outlet pipes.
Galvanized Steel – “Steel coated with a thin layer of zinc to provide corrosion
resistance in underbody auto parts, garbage cans, storage tanks, or fencing wire. Sheet
steel normally must be cold-rolled prior to the galvanizing stage. HOT-DIPPED. Steel is
run through a molten zinc coating bath, followed by an air stream “”wipe”” that controls
the thickness of the zinc finish.
Heat Pump- A type of water heater that uses electricity to move heat from one place to
another instead of generating heat directly, which can be more energy-efficient.
Heat pump water heater- is an energy efficient device that transfers ambient heat from
the environment into a storage tank via mechanical energy to heat water. Its
components are nearly identical to that of a refrigerator so you can think of it as a fridge
working in reverse.
Hot water heaters- These are appliances that provide a constant source of hot water.
They could be plugged in the water supply system or have to be manually filled. Also,
there are three types: solar water heaters, storage tank water heaters and tankless
water heaters.
PEX - stands for cross-linked polyethylene, which is a flexible plastic tubing material
used for hot and cold water supply lines. PEX has excellent temperature resistance and
is commonly used in domestic hot water applications.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride)- is commonly used for cold water applications, it is generally
not recommended for use in domestic hot water systems. PVC pipes and fittings have
temperature limitations that make them unsuitable for carrying hot water.
Storage tank water heaters- This type of water heater stores water in a tank and heats
it up for use. There are three types of water heaters, namely: gas water heaters, electric
water heaters, oil water heaters. Gas water heaters are more efficient in cost because it
uses natural gas to heat water. The most popular for most homes today is the electric
heaters. Its ease of use and maintenance justifies the initial financial investment. The
last type is the oil heater which is not as widely used as it was back in the day.
Solar water heaters- Using the sun’s energy to heat water, this type of heater is one of
the most popular choice for consumers because it’s more cost effective compared to
other types of heaters. It uses large panels to store the energy from the sun to heat
water either for homes or office spaces.
.
Tankless water heater- Unlike conventional heaters, the tankless water heater doesn’t
have a storage tank. It only heats water on demand making it more efficient for specific
uses.
Water heating-This is the process to heat water for domestic use such as bathing,
washing dishes, cooking food and space heating.
