GUÍA No. 1: Cultural Identity

1. Listen to the audio and put a check mark on the words you hear. What do they mean? Discuss with the class.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTGNe0T0lnQ

2. What is cultural identity? Watch the video and take brief notes in your composition notebook.

3. Share with your classmates what you understood from the audio.

4. Read the following definitions of cultural identity. Which definition is closer to your definition of cultural identity? Share your

thoughts with your classmates.

Definition1 :Culture is the shared characteristics of a group of people, which encompasses , place of birth,
religion, language, cuisine, social behaviors, art, literature, and music. Some cultures are widespread, and have a
large number of people who associate themselves with those particular values, beliefs, and origins. Others are
relatively small, with only a small number of people who associate themselves with that culture. However, the value
of culture cannot be defined by its size. No matter if a culture is widespread or kept within a small region, is young
or old, or has changed over time or stayed the same, every culture can teach us about ourselves, others, and the
global community. https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/resource-library-cultural-identity/

Definition 2: Cultural identities are the distinct identities of people or groups in cultural or subcultural categories
and social groups. Categories that make up cultural identities include sexuality, gender, religion, ethnicity, social
class, or region. We are often born into our cultural identities. Therefore, participation is not always voluntary.

Definition 3: Your cultural identity is a critical piece of your personal identity (and worldview) that develops as you
absorb, interpret, and adopt (or reject) the beliefs, values, behaviors, and norms of the communities in your life.
Our cultural identity can evolve, as culture is ever-evolving and dynamic. And while there are people who progress
through life without ever thinking about their cultural identity, it is something we tend to become aware of when it’s
challenged. This typically happens when we find ourselves in parts of the world or among groups with different
cultural norms. Our cultural identity is important because it influences how we interpret and react to such situations,
which can affect how successful we are in life. https://www.exceptionalfutures.com/cultural-identity

12. Descriptive Writing: Descriptive writing helps the reader visualize the person, place, thing, or situation
being described. When a text conjures a vivid, sensory impression in the reader’s mind, not only does it
make the writing more interesting to read; it helps the reader understand the text better and recognize the
author’s intention more clearly.

 It helps students make their writing more interesting and engaging to read.

 It creates opportunities for students to practice using new words in meaningful contexts, a key
strategy for building vocabulary.

 Descriptive writing tends to include figurative language, such as simile, metaphor, and
onomatopoeia. Noticing figurative language in mentor texts and incorporating it into their own writing
help students build critical verbal reasoning skills. To find out more about verbal reasoning and other
components of language comprehension, see the “In Depth” section from the Comprehension
module of our Reading 101 Course.

 It encourages students to learn from — and be metacognitive about — the techniques other
authors use to write vivid descriptions.

 It can help students clarify their understanding of new subject matter material and remember more
of what they learn.
