AUTOMatic Photovoltaic Panel Direction control for
Maximum Power using ARM 7 TDMI processor based
LPC2148 Controller.

ABSTRACT:

We use solar energy in many ways. All day, we use sunlight to see what we’re
doing and where we’re going. Solar energy is free and clean. There is enough for
everyone, and we will never run out of it. Solar energy is renewable. The sun will keep
making energy for millions of years. Why don’t we use the sun for all our energy needs?
We don’t know how to yet. The hard part is capturing the sunlight. It shines all over the
earth and only a little bit reaches any one place. On a cloudy day, most of the light never
reaches the ground at all.

This project is used as a media which is used to control and monitor the Matic
photovoltaic panel (system) for maximum power tracking. Naturally The direction of the
sun changes all the day along and if we place the solar panel in one direction we can track
only some part of the solar energy in to the electricity. This is a drawback. For this
purpose we are using a sum tracking method such that the photovoltaic panels changers
its direction according to the sun direction.

This is done with the help of programming the ARM microcontroller

(LPC2148). The LPC2148 are based on a 16/32 bit ARM7TDMI-S™ CPU with real-time
emulation and embedded trace support, together with 128/512 kilobytes of embedded
high speed flash memory. A 128-bit wide memory interface and unique accelerator
architecture enable 32-bit code execution at maximum clock rate. For critical code size
applications, the alternative 16-bit Thumb Mode reduces code by more than 30% with
minimal performance penalty. With their compact 64 pin package, low power
consumption, various 32-bit timers, 4- channel 10-bit ADC, USB PORT,PWM channels
and 46 GPIO lines with up to 9 external interrupt pins these microcontrollers are
particularly suitable for industrial control, medical systems, access control and point-of-
sale. With a wide range of serial communications interfaces, they are also very well
suited for communication gateways, protocol converters and embedded soft modems as
well as many other general-purpose applications.

This project uses two power supplies, one is regulated 5V for modules and other
one is 3.3V for microcontroller. 7805 three terminal voltage regulator is used for voltage
regulation. Bridge type full wave rectifier is used to rectify the ac out put of secondary of
230/12V step down transformer.
