Nagpur is the second capital of Maharashtra. It alternates with Mumbai as the seat of the State legislature. The
city is situated on the Nag River. The city was founded in the early 1700s. Towards the beginning of the 18th
century, the Gond Rajas were ruling the Vidarbha Region with Nagpur as their capital. In 1740, Raghuji Raje
Bhonsale, the King of then Berar annexed it and set up his headquarters at Nagpur.
In 1857, the British made Nagpur, the Capital of the Central Provinces. The city lies at the heart of India and
is at cross roads of the major routes joining South to North and East to West. Due to its strategic location, the
city was developed as commercial and industrial centre after the completion of Great India Peninsula Railway
in 1867. The improved transport facility led to the development of cotton based textile industries. The area is
also richly endowed with mineral products and a number of mineral based industries have come up around
Nagpur ever since. The region is also known for its oranges and Nagpur is rightly nick-named the “Orange

Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1907 in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

a monument locating the geographical centre of colonial India in the
city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, or that the Zero Mile Stone was erected
by the British to use this point to measure all the distances.
