Geography Project
Topic: Survey of a local market on the types of shops and services offered.
I have spent much time and effort in making this project. However it would not have been
possible without the help of many hardworking individuals.
Firstly I would like to express my special thanks to my school's principal, Mrs. Radha Baruah
and the school authority for giving me such an opportunity to showcase my talent and learn new
things.
I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to my Geography teacher, Mrs. Nandini Katakey
for her valuable guidance and constant supervision which has promoted my effort in all stages of
this project work. I would also like to thank my classmates who have lent me their ideas and
help.
Finally, words are not sufficient to express gratitude towards my cherished family members for
their kind encouragement and for providing me with the necessities which helped me in
completion of this project.

Guwahati is a vibrant city nestled in the northeastern part of India, serving as the gateway to the
enchanting region of Assam. Situated on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River, Guwahati
is the largest city in the state and a significant urban center. With its picturesque landscapes, the
city offers a blend of modernity and tradition, where bustling markets, ancient temples, and
historic landmarks coexist harmoniously. Guwahati's strategic location makes it a pivotal hub for
trade, commerce, and transportation, connecting various parts of the northeast and the rest of the

The Brahmaputra River flows to the north of the metropolis. The city is bordered on the south by
the foothills of the Shillong plateau and to the east by the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary. The
Bharalu River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, flows right through the heart of the city. To the

from monsoon run-off from the hills to the south of the lake. The lake drains into the
Brahmaputra, 5 km (3.1 mi) to the north, and acts as a natural stormwater reservoir for the city.
There are also multiple hills within the city limits.

Guwahati experiences a humid subtropical climate with distinct seasons throughout the year.
Summers, from March to June, are hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to

the city's proximity to the Brahmaputra River. The average annual rainfall is around 1,700 mm.
Winters, from November to February, are mild, with temperatures averaging between 10°C to
20°C. The city's climate is influenced by its location in the northeastern region of India, with the

General report
A market survey is undertaken to know the forces operating that involve decision
making for demand and supplies. The demand is created by the needs of the people
inhabiting the area. The supply is made taking into consideration the demand i.e. the
current market state and the products or service that may have a future demand.
The market survey helped to know about the demand of commodities in trend and the
changing demand pattern over time.
The price of the land shot up with the setting up of the National Highway was properly
done up by the NHAI. Since 2000 the prices have soared up almost 10 times. Now the
price is Rs. 650 to Rs 2000 per sq. ft.
The land use pattern changed over the years. It was inhabited by the Bodos in a village
named Ahomgaon. The land was utilized for growing wet paddy (Bodo and sali seeds).
It was mainly grown in the monsoon season with little traditional irrigation method
carried out from the stream that flowed past. With the construction of various education
institutions and healthcare facilities and the improvement in the connecting road the
land use pattern changed from agricultural to residential and industrial. The economy of
the people which was earlier dependent on agriculture now has changed to business
activities and services. Some are engaged in government jobs, many have been
providing services to the educational institutions, hospitals, business establishments or
running some businesses.
The people: The area was earlier inhabited by the Bodos and Garos have now been
inhabited by people of various cultures.
Some of the major highlights of the survey were:
A majority of the businesses are set up with personal savings or family assistance.
A large number of the customers prefer online transactions.
Most of the stores are permanent structures and every shop has electricity connections.
The flat topography, and excellent connectivity with the national highway, airport, and
Maligaon railway station have helped this area to emerge as an industrial and
commercial hub of extended Gauhati city.
The market area is mainly sustainable in its approach towards waste management.
Proper garbage collection setup is provided by Gauhati municipality and many of the
vegetable vendors are also converting their waste into composting. A few business
establishments and customers are still using plastic bags. Disposal of waste by
incineration again creates air pollution and open dumping creates land and water
pollution. These vendors and customers need to be made aware of sustainable waste
management techniques so that the pristine environment is maintained.
Therefore we can conclude that the area and market covered by us is a true case study
of a place with its favorable environment, flat terrain surrounded by hills and Garbhanga
reserve forest, and ethnic and migrated population that has its appeal to the world. The
cosmopolitan culture which has been reflected in the emergence of different hotels,
restaurants, bodybuilding centers, parlors, apartments, etc has supported the growth of
our surveyed market area. Through the survey we can summarize that the economic
condition of the people living here has improved over time.
Bibliography
The statistical values pertaining to the market are derived from data obtained through
the primary survey, which is then utilized to finalize the project.
