Chapter I: Introduction

Overview
AI tools, or artificial intelligence tools, has become a recent topic as it has affected a lot of
different branches of humanity, mainly in education. These tools were made to enhance
learning experiences, a good example of this said enhancement is its accessibility and
inclusivity, which provides students all around the world to have access to the same
information without facing language barriers. Speaking of language, it has also impacted
the way students learn English.

These tools have changed how students learn English. They make learning personal,
adapting to each student's needs using its many features and tools and changing the
content to match how well they're doing. This helps students get better at English by
correcting mistakes in speaking and writing and improving their vocabulary. That is, if used
fairly and correctly. Sadly, most students use these tools to cheat and/or make English
literary activities effortless and easy, which doesn’t help the student learn English at all. So,
it is of utmost importance to see how well these tools really help students learn English in
this day and age where these tools now exist.

Objectives
This thesis aims to find out how effective AI tools really are in terms of helping the Grade 8
students of PCA in their English learning. This is not however limited to PCA nor Grade 8
students, as a lot of parts of this study can be generally applied to any learner.

Statement of the Problem

This study entitled “The Study of the Effects of AI (Artificial Intelligence) Tools in the English
Learning of the 2023-2024 Grade 8 Students of PCA” aims to answer the following
questions:

1) What are the positive effects of AI in helping these students learn English?

2) What are the negative effects of AI in helping these students learn English?

3) Considering the pros and cons, will AI be a good learning tool for the students in the
future?

3
Significance of the Study
In this study, we aim to know how effective AI tools are when it comes to learning English in
general, as this study can also apply in other areas. We want to know how this technology
can be harnessed to improve the learning of students and how it can be abused to make
various education tasks effortless and easy as this information is crucial when it comes to
deciding if AI tools should be used in educational settings for the enhancements they give in
learning or if they should be prohibited due to the unfair advantage they give if
misused/abused.

Hypothesis
Examining the Effects of AI (Artificial Intelligence) Tools in the English Learning of the 2023-
2024 Grade 8 Students of PCA will give insight to the positive and negative outcomes of
using AI tools on English learning.

Chapter II: Related Foreign and Local Literature

Foreign Literature

Artificial Intelligence has been used as a powerful tool in education. Several analysis studies
are projected on pedagogy victimization artificial intelligence. Education advancing
additional and more with the help of computer science. Victimization artificial intelligence
technology, lecturers will mechanically analyze the tutorial method. In addition, pedagogy
seems to possess been improved by the mixing of artificial intelligence technology. (Moses
Glorino Rumambo Pandin, 202#)

English teaching effectiveness is maximized using artificial intelligence. AI will offer a real
simulation conversation platform for English language education and study. We will aid
students in improving their usage of written, spoken, and written English and their
comprehension abilities. The knowledge about the many English-speaking nations' cultures
and practices that AI has gathered may be utilized to connect and engage with students and
considerably increase their enthusiasm for studying English. (Zanyar Nathir Ghafar1, Heshw
Faiaq Salh, Marya Ali Abdulrahim, Sayran Sabah Farxha, Sima Faiaq Arf, Rubar Ismail Rahim,
2023)

Local Literature

One of the most promising applications of AI in education is personalized learning.

Personalized learning is an approach to education that tailors learning experiences to the
individual needs of each student. This approach can significantly improve educational
outcomes by ensuring that each student receives content and experiences best suited to
their needs. AI can be used to personalize learning in several ways. For example, AI can be
used to develop individualized learning plans for students based on their assessment data.
AI can also provide real-time feedback to students and educators on student progress and
areas of need. (Mark Anthony Llego, 2022)

5
Chapter III: Methodology

Introduction
The methods used for gathering information for this thesis has mostly been the
opinions and personal experiences of the current (2023-2024) Grade 8 students of PCA,
gathered via survey. Apart from this, we have also researched similar papers that talk about
the effects of AI in learning in general. We believe that these methods provide the most
information regarding the effects of AI in the English learning of the 2023-2024 Grade 8
students of PCA.
Research Design
This data collection utilizes Descriptive Research Design using Qualitative Data
in order to present, analyze, and interpret the data we collected on our survey. The
respondents of this method are the 8th grade students of Pasig Christian Academy
batch 2023-2024. In this survey we can also see if the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence)
tools in English learning is effective/useful for the respondents. In our conducting a
survey, 23 out of 25 students of 8th Graders that under of the academic year 2023-
2024, are asked to answer a survey questionnaire containing 12 questions that
appertaining to the research topic. This survey employs a non-probability sampling
method since the survey questionnaire will be answered by every student in the
specified section.

Research Locale
We conducted this survey at Pasig Christian Academy. A school that is located at 38
Col. P. Licsi Street, Barracks, Caniogan, Pasig, Philippines. This school was selected because
all of its students have access to technology. Its students are also familiar with what AI is.

Respondents of the Study

The chosen respondents of this study that we conducted were the grade 8
students of PCA batch 2023-2024. All in all, the population of the grade 8 students are 25.
But 2 were not present during the time we conducted the survey due to illnesses. So, all in
all, we surveyed 23 students.

Sample or Sampling Methods

The chosen grade level for this survey that we conducted were the Grade 8
students of Pasig Christian Academy batch 2023-2024. We chose this grade level not only
because it is convenient and accessible to us, but also, we lacked the resources to survey
higher grade levels. We used convenience sampling for this study as it was the best method
for us because the nature of this study is qualitative and we seek to know their opinions
regarding the use of AI for English learning.

Data Collection Procedures

The respondents were handed out a 2-page paper that consists of 12 questions
regarding the topic. We personally handed it out to the students. At this time, we were
present and monitoring the students as they answer the questionnaires. The questionnaire
should take about 10-20 minutes to answer. The questions were focused on the students’
personal experiences and opinions about AI. The question was mostly in a form of binary
scale and multiple choices so we can analyze it more easily and we can get more opinions
from the students. We double checked all the responses and made sure that everyone
present was able to answer the survey questionnaires.

DATA ANALYSIS STRATEGIES

1. Do you use AI (Artificial Intelligence) for English learning?

Yes No

Yes
39%

No
61%

As the first question of this questionnaire, we asked Grade 8 students of Pasig

Christian Academy of school year 2023-2024 if they use AI for English learning. We found
out that only 39% of the Grade 8 students of PCA uses AI, while 61% of the students do not
use AI. Based on this we found out that the majority of Grade 8 students at Pasig Christian
Academy school year 2023-2024 really don’t use AI for English learning and only a minority
does. The results show that while AI helping tools may be gaining popularity over the recent
years, a significant number of students are still skeptical about the reliability of AI helping
tools. It also suggests that the grade 8 students might lack the awareness with AI helping
tools resulting in lower percentage of students using it.

2. (ONLY ANSWER IF YOUR ANSWER TO QUESTION NO. 1 IS NO)

Would you consider using AI (Artificial Intelligence) to help you
study English?

No
57%

We made question number 2 a follow up question to question number 1. and will only be
answered if they answer NO to question number 1. And out of the 61% of students who
answered NO, 43% of students would say that they would consider using AI to enhance
their knowledge about the English Vocabulary, on the other hand, 57% of students who do
not use AI would not consider using AI. This implies that a majority of Grade 8 students
11
would not consider using AI and would still rely more on using the internet for researching
or using books to study English, while the minority would consider using AI. The reluctance
of trying to use AI may be the cause of different factors like skepticism to the reliability of AI
and many more.
3. (ONLY ANSWER IF YOUR ANSWER TO QUESTION NO. 1 IS YES) How
often do you use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to help you study English?

Question number 3 is also a follow up to question number 1 wherein they will only
answer if they answer YES to question 1. We found out that 11% of the students who use AI
always use it to enhance their knowledge about the English vocabulary, while 89% of the
students who use AI only use it sometimes for English Learning. This implies that most of
the grade 8 students who uses AI are not heavily reliant to AI and only a small percentage
of students use AI often for English learning. These answers show that AI cannot replace
English teachers in terms of teaching English to students and this also implies that English
teachers are more reliable than AI.

In question number 4, students will only answer if they answered YES in question
number 1. We asked the students on what AI helping tools have they used for English
learning, and we found out that 44% of the students who uses AI, uses google assistant for
searching information and to help students improve and help them study English, and 45%
of the students that also uses AI, uses ChatGPT a famous AI helping tool that can answer
any question you ask, while 11% of the students who uses AI uses Siri, mostly gathering
information just like what we explained on google assistant, but is compatible for apple
users only.

5. On a scale of 1-5 (1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest) how big is

In question number 5, We asked the Grade 8 students to rate how big the impact of
Artificial Intelligence is when it comes in English learning, and it turns out that 16 out of 23

students or 70% of students answered 3, while 6 students or 26% of students answered 4,
and 1 student answered 5. No one answered 1 or 2. This implies that AI does have decent
impact in English learning, but it really can't replace teachers' capability in teaching the
English subject. Students will still rely more on teachers than AI. This also means AI is still
lacking in terms of replicating English teachers' ability to teach students in English literacy.

6. Do you think AI (Artificial Intelligence) helps a lot in the self-studying

abilities of the English subject?

As for the 6th question for our survey, we also asked the students if Artificial
Intelligence helps them a lot in their self-studying abilities when it comes in English
learning, and the majority of the class (91%) answered Yes while some of the students (9%)
answered No. This means that AI is actually useful for English learning, because it helps
students hone their skills in the English vocabulary, but when it comes for their
improvements, based on the information earlier, AI can help students hone their skills
when it comes to English learning, AI can also help students when it comes to reading and
writing

think that it has a lot of positive effects in understanding the English subject more. We
asked the students if what do they think is the most positive effect of AI, and in their
opinion, the most positive effect of AI is it can enhance the grammatical skills of a person,
with 70% of students agreeing to that statement. The next answer with the most response
with 17% of students agreeing is that AI increases fluency in conversation. 9% of students
answered it can improve reading speed and comprehension, while 4% answered it can
increase someone's confidence in speaking in English. No one answered others. This
suggests that AI can help students improve in their understanding of the English subject,
most especially the grammatical skills of a person.

When it comes to dependency in using AI, out of the 39% who answered yes in
question number 1, we found out 8 (89%) Grade 8 students who answered yes are
somewhat dependent on using AI on a daily basis. Only 1 student (11%) is very dependent
when it comes to using AI. Now that we have made an advancement to artificial
intelligence, many people became dependent on artificial intelligence when it comes to
English learning, but too much dependency can lead to bad things like over-dependency,
and bad habits. With this information that is stated, it proves that AI cannot replace
teachers when it comes to English learning, because AI causes over-dependency and bad
habits, which AI itself cannot avoid, the use of teachers in our society is to help the students
grow on their own and to teach them to move forward.

As a part of our survey, we made the students rate from 1- 5 again to gain more
knowledge on how bad AI affect can someone on their English learning, 10 (44%) students
answered 2, while 6 (26%) students answered 3, there are also 5 (22%) students who
answered 1, and lastly, there is 1 student who answered 5 and 1 student answered 4. with
our technological advancement, negative/bad effects can’t be avoided when it comes to
English learning, because people tend to abuse things that is really useful to them, but it is
important to control oneself and try to hone your skills with you and yourself only. With
this information we proved that Artificial Intelligence have other effects, not just positive
but also the negative, but it doesn't mean we can't do anything about it, based on what is
written earlier, the negative effects of AI can be fixed/removed if students learn to control
themselves and try to hone their skills.

For us to dig in deeper in to enhance our knowledge about the negative effects of
AI, we asked the opinions of grade 8 students about what the most negative effect of AI in a
person’s English learning is. 11(48%) students say that using AI may limit someone’s
creativity on doing schoolwork, and for 8(35%) of students say that AI may hinder students'
critical thinking when students rely on Artificial intelligence too much, and that leads to
more problems on using artificial intelligence in English learning. 2(9%) students think that
using AI may lessen outside interaction and may lead to lower emotional intelligence and
2(8%) of students think that it reduces motivation to practice English. Based on the
information we gathered, AI may limit a student's creativity because AI makes everything
easier. These findings show that overreliance on AI helping tools as substitute for
traditional pedagogical methods may hinder students' critical thinking and creativity.

11. Do you think the pros of using AI (Artificial Intelligence) helping
tools outweigh the cons of using it?
Yes No

Yes
74%

On this part of the survey questionnaire, we asked the students if they think that the
pros of using AI helping tools can outweigh the cons of using it, 17(78%) students answered
"Yes" while 6(22%) students answered "No". With the current situation of this generation
and the advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the negative effects of Artificial Intelligence
cannot be avoided but it depends on the person and how they use it. It can help a person
improve on many things, mostly in English speaking. They may abuse it and lead to vast
disasters. But if we think about the future, these negative outcomes or vast disasters are
actually helpful in the future because these mistakes will keep on motivating AI to improve
and try to teach English as much as they could. Despite its many cons AI does help a lot in
someone's ability to study English.

12. In the future, do you think AI (Artificial Intelligence) will play a

bigger role in helping students study English?

18
As the last question of our questionnaires, we asked the Grade 8 students if they
think AI will play a bigger role in helping students study English. 18(78%) students answered
yes, it will have a bigger role in the future while 6(22%) students don't think AI will play a
bigger role in the future. We also asked the students to explain their answer on why they
think it will or will not play a bigger role in the future. Among the Grade 8 students who
answered yes, the most common explanations are: "technology will be more advanced in
the future", "AI will help someone in their essays and grammar", and "it will be able to do
what teachers do and even better". The most common explanation from the Grade 8
students who answered no are: "listening to teachers will make someone understand
English" and "AI won't give someone knowledge to write their essays". The grade 8
students have mixed opinion about the future of AI. In light of these findings, it is evident
that AI will play a bigger role to students in helping them study the English subject, though
some still have reservations due to distrust in AI. The innovation and advancement of AI in
the future will lead to more students using AI.

CHAPTER IV: Summary

Findings
The results of the study were condensed in line with the problem statement presented in
Chapter 1.

1) What are the positive effects of AI in helping these students learn English?
The positive effects of AI in assisting students with learning English are varied. Firstly, it is
an adequate tool for enhancing grammatical skills, as noted by 70% of the surveyed
students, who recognize AI's role in improving grammatical skills. Additionally, AI aids in
easing selfstudy, with 91% of students acknowledging its assistance in improving vocabulary
and reading comprehension. This accessibility and convenience provided by AI tools like
Google Assistant and ChatGPT enable students to engage with English learning resources
more readily, potentially increasing their motivation and participation in the learning
process. Overall, AI provides personalized learning experiences to different kinds of
students with varying learning styles, thereby contributing positively to every type of
students' proficiency in the English language.

2) What are the negative effects of AI in helping these students learn English?
Despite its benefits, the integration of AI in English learning also has several negative effects
that should be considered. One significant concern is the potential limitation of creativity,
as said by 48% of students, who fear that an over-reliance on AI may suppress creative
thinking and problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, there is apprehension among 35% of
students regarding AI's impact on critical thinking skills, as over-dependence on AI tools
may lead to a "lazy" or easygoing approach to learning, hindering the students' ability to
evaluate and/or analyze information independently. Moreover, the survey indicates a
common issue of dependency, with 89% of AI users admitting to varying degrees of
reliance, raising concerns about students' ability to learn self-taught learning habits and
resilience in the face of challenging situations in learning.

20
3) Considering the pros and cons, will AI be a good learning tool for the students in
the future?
Considering both its positive and negative effects, the question arises whether AI will serve
as a beneficial learning tool for students in the future. While AI offers many advantages,
such as accessibility, personalized learning experiences, and assistance in grammar and
vocabulary improvement, its cons, including potential limitations on creativity, hindrance to
critical thinking, and dependency issues, must be addressed. The effectiveness of AI as a
learning tool depends on the integrators of AI learning tools' ability to conquer these
challenges, giving a balanced approach to AI integration that emphasizes the bettering of
essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and self-taught learning. Ultimately, AI
holds promise as an adequate tool for enhancing English learning, provided that its
implementation is guided by a thoughtful consideration of its potential pros and cons, with
a focus on empowering students to become independent and knowing learners in the
digital age.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the survey conducted among the 2023-2024 Grade 8 students of Pasig
Christian Academy gave us interesting insights into the use and perceptions of AI in English
learning. The findings indicate that while a minority of students currently use AI for English
learning, the majority is still hesitant, possibly due to skepticism about the reliability of AI
tools or a lack of awareness. Despite this, there is a notable openness among students who
do not use AI to consider its potential pros, especially in enhancing English vocabulary
knowledge. However, concerns about over-reliance on AI and its potential negative impacts
on creativity and critical thinking emphasizes the need for careful integration and balanced
reliance on AI tools in education. This information satisfies the previously presented
Hypothesis in Chapter 1, as well as giving importance to the significance of this study.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, AI does have its advantages but also lots of
disadvantages in English learning. It is important for schools and students to approach the
use of AI towards English learning with a balanced perspective. To maximize the use of AI
while lessening its negative impacts, we suggest students to use AI moderately so that
students can avoid being over dependent using AI. AI should only supplement learning
rather than replacing it. It is also important for students to practice their critical thinking
and creativity. For future researchers who would conduct a study similar to our topic should
expand the research by asking students more about their thoughts regarding the use of AI
towards English learning and studying the long-term effects of using AI tools.
