RESPIRATION
RESPIRATION
RESPIRATION
Define respiration.
Respiration is the burning down of glucose using oxygen in the body cells to
release or produce energy.
Note: Respiration is the reverse process of photosynthesis.
WORD EQUATION FOR RESPIRATION:
Glucose + oxygen → Energy + carbon dioxide + water
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BREATHING AND RESPIRATION
Breathing is the exchange of gasses in and out of the body while respiration is the
burning of glucose using oxygen in the body cells to release energy.
Breathing refers to a physical process or act that animals carry out to move
oxygen rich air into their lungs and gives out carbon dioxide while respiration
refers to how the cells of the body use oxygen to create energy.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND RESPIRATION IN PLANTS
Respiration Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide and water are Carbon dioxide and water are used
produced
It happens in all cell types It happens only in plants
It releases energy It traps and stores energy
It takes place in the mitochondria It takes place in chloroplast and
chlorophyll
A break down process A building up process
Oxygen is used up Oxygen is released
Soil erosion
Global warming
Loss of habitat for small organism
Reduced rain fall
The will be no or shortage of food
Shortage of oxygen for animals
