Link to IB concept POSSIBILITY because countries can implement policies that try to
mitigate climate change to reduce the projected impacts on both humans and environment.

d) “Climate change is killing people.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?
[10 Marks]

Intro:
- Definition: Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather
patterns.
- The PROCESS (IB concept) of Climate change has had drastic impacts on the
environment, including people.
- This essay will discuss the extent to which climate change resulthurrs in the death of
people through extreme weather events, spread of diseases, food shortages, and
water availability.

Point: Climate change increases the frequency and identity of extreme weather events.
Explanation: Vietnam is a country that is very prone to natural disasters in the last few years.
Evidence: A total of 1,057 natural disasters hit Vietnam in 2022, leaving 175 persons dead
and missing,
Explanation: Therefore, climate change is causing extreme weather events which results in
death of people.
- However, to combat this, there has been collaboration of the Green Climate Fund
(GCF), the Vietnamese government, and the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP).
- It focuses on building water-prrof. More resilient homes in Votname to combat effects
of flooding and hurricanes
- So far about 3,200 houses of this type have been built in the five provinces,
with 426 built in Quang Nam.
Conclusion: In conclusion, although climate change causes deaths of people indirectly
through extreme weather events, measures have been taken place to prevent these drastic
impacts in the future.

Point: Climate change has increased the spread of insect borne diseases.
Explanation: Climate change cause increase in temperatures, with increasing rate at which
pests reproduce
Evidence: Climate change increases the risk of human exposure to West Nile virus. Overall,
2,445 cases of WNv were reported in humans, and there were 165 (6.8%) confirmed deaths
in 2021.
Explanation: Therefore, climate change in killing people through the increase in spread of
deadly diseases

Point: Climate change is causing water shortages.

Explanation: Rising sea levels can contaminate land and water resources with saltwater,
which reduces the amount of clean drinking water and damages infrastructure.
Evidence: In India, 91 million people (6% of the population) lack access to safe water, and
approximately 200,000 people die in India each year due to the lack of access to safe
drinking water.
Explanation: However, desalination projects have been put in place to combat this, such as
the Minjur Seawater Desalination Plant and the Nemmeli plant, both in Chennai.
Concluding: However, overall the water shortages that occur due to climate change are more
damaging compared to how effective water treatment plants are.

Point: climate change affects precipitation patterns, which then has an impact on agriculture.
Evidence: In the short term, some areas are experiencing a lengthened growing season,
such as how the average length of the growing season in the USA has increased
by more than two weeks since the beginning of the 20th century. This can
increase crop yield and hence reduce food shortages.
Explanation: However, in the lng term, Climate change leads to an increase in droughts and
less precipitation.
Evidence: Fore example, Zimbabwe's maize output is projected to decline 43 percent in the
2021/2022 agricultural season due to changing weather conditions.
Conclusion: Although some PLACES (IB concept) may experience a longer growing season,
in the long term, climate change will reduce crop yields and contribute to a decrease in food
availability worldwide.

Conclusion:
- In conclusion, climate change indirectly results in the deaths of people through
extreme weather events, spread of diseases, and food and water shortages.
- Although measures such as water treatment plans and more resilient infrastructure
have been implemented to combat the effects of climate change, on a larger scale,
climate change is resulting in more deaths of people than resulting in benefits.
- However, in the future, there is the POSSIBILITY of more and more countries
implementing policies to reduce these impacts, and reducing the negative impact of
climate change on people.
