CHAPTER I

The Problem and its Background

Adolescence is a critical period marked by significant emotional, psychological, and social


changes, often accompanied by various stressors such as academic pressures, social dynamics, and
personal challenges. Music, which is very important to many teenagers, can help reduce stress,
improve mood, and support mental health. However, we don’t fully understand how music affects
the mood and mental health of Grade 11 students at STI College Caloocan. This lack of knowledge
makes it hard to use music effectively to help students’ mental health. This study aims to explore
how Grade 11 students at this school experience music and how it affects their emotional and
psychological well-being, to better support their mental health.

INTRODUCTION

In a comprehensive review study conducted by Feng Wang (2020), We Investigates the


influence of music education on the mental health of students, emphasizing numerous significant
benefits. The research reveals that music education considerably enhances students’ emotional
intelligence, which plays a vital role in improving mental health outcomes. By participating in
musical activities, students acquire superior emotional regulation abilities, fostering a more stable
and positive mental state. The study emphasizes that the cognitive and emotional engagement
involved in music activities is crucial to these positive changes. One of the primary findings is that
music’s rhythmic and repetitive qualities significantly contribute to reducing stress and anxiety
among students. These musical characteristics provide a soothing effect that can alleviate tension
and create a more relaxed learning environment. This reduction in stress not only helps in
managing anxiety but also contributes to better overall mental health and well-being. In addition,
the researchers discusses the long-term benefits of music on mental health. Engaging in music
from an early age can instill a lifelong appreciation for music, which can continue to provide
emotional and psychological benefits throughout adulthood. This enduring relationship with music
can serve as a coping mechanism for stress and a source of joy and relaxation in daily life.

This study identifies a significant gap in understanding the impact of music on the emotional and
psychological well-being of Grade 11 students at STI College Caloocan. Despite recognizing
music’s role in alleviating stress and supporting mental health among teenagers, research specific
to this group within our school context is lacking. By addressing this gap, the study aims to provide
valuable insights into how music can promote mental well-being, enhance academic experiences,
and improve overall quality of life for these students. The findings could inform future programs
incorporating music as a therapeutic tool for mental health. Therefore, the purpose of this study is
to comprehensively investigate and assess the impact of music on the mood and mental health of
Grade 11 students at STI College Caloocan, exploring whether different music genres have varying
effects on their emotional state and mental well-being, ultimately supporting their mental health
needs during their studies.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


The influence of music on students’ mood and mental health is a topic of increasing interest,
particularly in the context of educational environments. At STI College Caloocan, Grade 11
students encounter various academic and social pressures that can significantly affect their
emotional well-being and mental health. Music, often used as a coping mechanism or a source of
enjoyment, has the potential to play a crucial role in managing these stresses. However, the specific
ways in which music impacts these students’ mood and mental health remain underexplored. This
study aims to investigate how music influences the mood and mental health of Grade 11 students
at STI College Caloocan.

To answer the above cited problem, we researchers will aim to answer these following questions:

1. How does listening to music affect the mood and mental health of grade 11 students in STI
College Caloocan?

2. What potential negative effects, if any, does listening to music have on the mental health of
Grade 11 students at STI College Caloocan?
3. Do different genres of music affect grade 11 students’ mood and mental health differently?

ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS

We researchers have conducted a study about the impact of music on Grade 11 Students Mood
and Mental Health in STI College Caloocan. In line with this purpose, we made an Alternative
Hypothesis about the topic.

There is a significant correlation between the impact of music on Grade 11 Students mood and the
mental health in STI College Caloocan
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The respondents of this study are Grade 11 students at STI College Caloocan during the 2023-
2024 academic year. The research focuses exclusively on this grade level to provide a detailed
understanding of how music influences their mood and mental health. The study investigates the
effects of different types of music on students’ emotions and mental well-being, conducted within
the confines of the STI College Caloocan campus. However, the scope is restricted to environments
where students commonly listen to music, such as classrooms, common areas, and designated
music spaces. Other factors influencing mood and mental health are not covered, as the primary
objective is to explore the specific impact of music on these aspects among Grade 11 students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is significant as it seeks to provide valuable insights into the impact of music on the
mood and mental health of Grade 11 students at STI College Caloocan. By understanding how
different genres and types of music affect students’ emotional well-being, educators, parents,
mental health professionals, and future researchers can better support students in managing stress
and enhancing their overall mental health.

For Educators: The findings can help teachers and school administrators develop strategies to
incorporate music into the educational environment to foster a positive learning atmosphere and
improve student engagement and emotional well-being.

For Parents: Parents can gain a deeper understanding of how music influences their children’s
mental health and mood, enabling them to support their children’s emotional needs more
effectively at home.

For Mental Health Professionals: Counselors and psychologists can use the insights from this
study to integrate music therapy into their practices, offering tailored interventions that address the
specific emotional and mental health needs of high school students.

For Students: The study provides students with knowledge about how music affects their mental
health, empowering them to use music as a tool for self-regulation and emotional support.
For Future Researchers: This study lays the groundwork for further research on the topic by
providing initial qualitative insights into the relationship between music and adolescent mental
health. Future researchers can build upon these findings by exploring different age groups, diverse
educational settings, or by employing quantitative methods to generalize the results. Additionally,
they can investigate other variables such as the impact of music on academic performance or social
interactions among students.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Adolescent Mental Health: typically characterized by a roller coaster of emotional and


psychological highs and lows.

Superior Emotional Regulation: emotion regulation is the ability to exert control over one’s own
emotional state.

Alleviate Tension: in the context of stress management, refers to any action or measure taken to
reduce the intensity of stress and its debilitating effects on an individual’s physical and mental
health.

Enduring Relationship: between two people who fell in love and work together to keep the
relationship strong even during the most challenging times.
