According to the affidavit, there are 2,454


elephants in captivity, of which 560 are in
possession with forest departments and 1,687
with private individuals. However, 664 of the
total captive elephants in the country are
without ownership certificate while there are
85 in zoos, 26 in circuses and 96 in temples.

MIKE Sites in India
The Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) programme is an international
collaboration that measures the levels, trends and causes of elephant mortality,
thereby providing an information base to support international decision-making
related to conservation of elephants in Asia and Africa.

Established by CITES by Resolution 10.10 adopted at the 10th Conference of the


Parties in 1997. The MIKE Programme is entirely dependent on donor support.

Project Elephant
It was launched by the GoI in 1992 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme with
following objectives:

▪ To protect elephants, their habitat & corridors


▪ To address issues of man-animal conflict
▪ Welfare of captive elephants

The Project is being mainly implemented in 16 States / UTs , viz. Andhra Pradesh,
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala,
Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand,
Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change provides the financial
and technical support to major elephant range states in the country through
Project Elephant.
