The Digital Revolution

Task 1 – Read through the paragraph below about the Digital Revolution. Underline
or highlight any phrases which describe how technology has changed over time.
The digital revolution describes the period of time during which huge developments were made in
technology and computing. There is some disagreement about the exact beginning of this era, but
it began roughly at the end of the 1950s and is still continuing now! In the 1970s, computers were
becoming small enough that it was possible to have them in homes and workplaces. Previously they
had taken up entire rooms! The number of computers in the average home grew through the 80s
and 90s and an increasing number of people had access to the internet in their homes. Over time,
Wi-Fi replaced wired internet connections. Laptops increased in popularity as they became more
lightweight and portable, and people were able to use their computers from different locations. As
mobile phones developed in their complexity, smartphones were invented. These devices allowed
users to access the internet from anywhere. This meant you could video chat, email, search the
internet and access social media from anywhere using mobile data. The way we use technology
has continued to develop, now we can manage our money online using apps and pay for things
wirelessly by tapping a card. Some people even use cryptocurrency instead of money. In some
stores, we can pay at a self-service machine. We can play video games online with friends nearby
or other players from around the world. Smart technology is used in some homes to automatically
control elements such as central heating. There are even companies
developing self-driving cars and delivery drones.

everyday activities before technology and with the use of technology.
