Medieval literature brings together all the written artistic productions of Europe dating from

the thousand years of the Middle Ages, the historical period between the fall of the Roman
Empire in the 5th century and the discovery of America in the 15th century, and
characterized by the rise of an agrarian feudal society.

that the margins of literacy and the distribution of literate culture in Europe fell dramatically in
comparison with Antiquity and especially with the later Renaissance. The spirit of the time
was religious, and Christianity prevailed in European culture, imposing faith and dogmatic
values above any other point of view.
