Class: Ss 2A

No.in Class:96

Average Age: 15

Subject:Chemistry

Topic: Alkanols

Time: 12:40- 02:00

Sub Topic: Definition of Alkanols

Duration: 80minutes

Learning Material(s): Starch,grains,potatoes,beakers,distillation

apparatus,spatula,yeast,sugar cane etc

LESSON OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to;

I. Define alkanols

II. ii. State the molecular formula of alkanols family

III. iii. Describe the functional group

IV. iv. State the classification of alkanols

STEP I: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

Mode:Individual

Teacher's Activities:The teacher asked the students to;

I. Define alkanols

II. State the molecular formula of first five members

III. Describe a functional group of alkanols

IV. State the classification of alkanols

Students' Activities:The students answered the teacher’s questions orally

STEP II: EXPLORATION

Mode:Individual

Teacher's Activities: The teacher asks the students to;

I. State the classification of alkanols

II. Describe primary alkanols

III. Define secondary alkanols

Students' Activities: The students answered the teacher’s questions

STEP III: DISCUSSION

Mode: Group

Teacher's Activities: The teacher guides the students to deduce the meaning of;

1. Define Alkanols as an organic compound containing hydroxyl group that are derived
from alkanes

2. Explain the general formula of alkanols as CnH2n + 1OH

3. Describe the classification of alkanols as based on the number of hydroxyl groups, they
are;

i. Monohydric alkanols as alkanols one hydroxyl group (OH) per molecules

ii. Dihydric alkanols as one which contains two hydroxyl groups in the molecules

iii. Trihydric alkanols as alkanols which contains three hydroxyl groups in the molecules

4. Describe alkanols based on number of alkyl group

a. Primary alkanols is when the carbon atom bearing the hydroxyl group is attached to
only one alkyl group and two hydrogen atoms.

b. Secondary alkanols occurs when carbon atom bearing the hydroxyl group is attached
to two alkyl group and one hydrogen atom.

c. Tertiary alkanols occurs when carbon atom bearing the hydroxyl group is attached to
three alkyl groups

Students' Activities: The teacher guides the students to deduce the meaning of;
1. Define Alkanols as an organic compound containing hydroxyl group that are derived

STEP IV: APPLICATION

Mode: Group

Teacher's Activities: The teacher guides the students to deduce the meaning of;

1. State the general formula and write the molecular formula for the first two members

I. CnH2n + 1OH when n = 1 C1H2 (n) +1OH = CH3

II. CnH2n +1OH when n=2 C2H2 (2)+1OH = C2H5OH

III. CnH2n +1OH when n=3 C3H2(3)+1OH = C3H7OH

2. Write down the classifications of alkanols based on hydroxyl group

a. Monohydric alkanol eg ethanol

b. Dihydric alkanols eg Ethane 1,2, diol

c. Tertiary alkanols eg Propane 1,2,3, triol

Students' Activities: The students answered the teachers questions

STEP V: EVALUATION

Mode: Individual

Teacher's Activities: The teacher asked the students to answer the following questions;

1. Define alkanols

2. State the molecular formula of alkanols family

3. Describe the functional group

4. State the classification of alkanols

Students' Activities: The students answered the teachers questions orally
