Practice
CHEM 1415
• Practice:
Calculate the ∆H°rxn of the following reaction using the data
provided.
ΔHf°
(kJ/mol)
2Al (s) + Fe2O3 (s) ® Al2O3 (s) + 2Fe (s)
Fe2O3 (s) –822.2
Al2O3 (s) –1669.8

Heat Transfer & Thermal Equilibrium

• Practice: A 50.0 g block of metal with a

specific heat of 0.903 J/g·°
C at 55 °
C is
added to 125 mL of water at 25° C. What
is the final temperature of the water?

Solution Calorimetry Example

In a coffee cup calorimetry experiment, 2.50 g calcium metal is

added to 100.0 mL of concentrated HCl. The temperature of the
solution rises from 22.0 °C to 43.2 ° C.
Calculate ΔH in kJ per mol of Ca for the reaction. Use 1.00 g/mL
as the density of the solution and 4.184 J/g·°C as the specific heat
capacity.

Ca(s) + 2 HCl (aq) ® CaCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

Hess’s Law
• Practice:
Calculate the enthalpy change for the reaction:

W (s) + C (graphite) ® WC(s)

given the following information:

2W (s) + 3O2 (g) ® 2WO3 (s) ΔH = -1680.6 kJ

C (graphite) + O2 (g) ® CO2 (g) ΔH = -393.5 kJ
2WC (s) + 5O2 (g) ® 2WO3 (s) + 2CO2 (g) ΔH = -2391.6 kJ
Entropy change

• Practice:

What is ∆So (J/K) at 25°C for the following reaction?

S° (J/K·mol)
Substance
2CO2(g) → 2CO(g) + O2(g) at 25°C
CO2(g) 205.0
CO(g) 197.9
O2(g) 213.6
• Practice: Entropy Changes in the Universe

Calculate the change in entropy for the universe and identify

spontaneity of the reaction in the synthesis of ammonia at
25°C:
N2(g) + 3H2(g) → 2NH3(g)

ΔS°sys = –199 J/K·mol

ΔH°sys = –92.6 kJ/mol
• Practice:
Given the following data at 25°C, at what temperature (in °C)
will I2 sublime?

∆Hof(kJ/mol) ∆Gof(kJ/mol) So (J/(mol•K))

I2(s) 0 0 116.1
I2(g) 62.4 19.4 260.6
• Practice: Calculate the standard free-energy for the following
reaction at 25°C using the thermodynamic data provided.

2C2H6(g) + 7O2(g) → 4CO2(g) + 6H2O(l)

Substance ΔG°f (kJ/mol) at 25°C

CO2(g) –394.4
H2O(l) –237.2
C2H6(g) –32.89
Practice #2: Calculate the standard free-energy for the following
reaction at 100°C using the thermodynamic data provided.

2C2H6(g) + 7O2(g) → 4CO2(g) + 6H2O(l)

Substance ΔG°f (kJ/mol) ΔH°f (kJ/mol) So (J/mol-K)

CO2(g) –394.4 -393.5 213.8

H2O(l) –237.2 -285.8 70.0
C2H6(g) –32.89 -84.68 229.2
O2(g) 0 0 205.2
