Cloze Reading Workbook

Student Activity: read a passage and complete a Cloze Reading Activity
with the passage.

How to share with students: These pages are sized for printing or can
be assigned digitally using an LMS (like Google Classroom), where
students can work on their own slide decks via “Make a Copy for Each
Student.” Each slide is set up with text boxes for students to type in.

Please Note: Because Diffit resources can vary in length, be sure to

check the formatting on each slide.

Suggested Lesson Flow:

1. Preview Vocabulary with students prior to reading.
2. Have students read and complete the Cloze Reading Activity.
3. Have students go through the Multiple Choice Questions. Students
will answer each question and explain their thinking.
4. Have students complete the Short Answer Questions.
5. Have students complete the Open Ended Questions and discuss
with partners or groups their responses.

Feel free to edit, remix, and use this resource however works best for
you and your students! Find editing tips here!

Do you know what word problems are? Word problems are math problems that use words instead of just
numbers. They help us practice adding and subtracting numbers. Today, we are going to learn about
__________ and __________ word problems on adding numbers with sums up to 20.

When we solve routine word problems, we use addition and subtraction within 20. We can use objects,
drawings, and equations to help us solve these problems. For example, if we have 5 apples and we get 3
more, we can add them together to find out how many apples we have in total. We can also take away
apples to find the difference between two numbers.

Non-routine word problems are a little bit harder. We can use the same strategies, but the problems are more
challenging. We might have to add three whole numbers whose __________ is less than or equal to 20. This
means we have to find the total of three numbers and make sure it is less than or equal to 20. It's important
to read the word problem carefully and think about what it is asking us to do.

To practice these word problems, we can use worksheets that have addition problems with sums up to 20.
These worksheets will help us become better at solving word problems and adding numbers. We can also
use word problem worksheets with two-step problems to __________ ourselves. These problems require us
to think about more than one step to find the answer.

Remember, word problems are a fun way to practice our math skills. By solving routine and non-routine word
problems on adding numbers with sums up to 20, we can become better at math and improve our
problem-solving skills. Keep practicing and you will become a math __________!
