Solid State Starter Fan Kit Retrofit
On Trane CenTraVac™ Chillers
This confidential service bulletin provides special warranty policy and/or service expense
compensation information for use by Trane warranty representatives.
Important: When entering your claim, select the retrofit ID with your region’s suffix from the
dropdown list. Retrofit IDs include the two main areas of the literature order number followed by
the region suffix without dashes. For example, for confidential service bulletin CVRE-SVC01A-EN
in the North America region, select retrofit ID CVRESVC01NA.

 WARNING
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Required!
Installing/servicing this unit could result in exposure to electrical, mechanical and chemical
hazards.

• Before installing/servicing this unit, technicians MUST put on all Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) recommended for the work being undertaken. ALWAYS refer to appropriate
MSDS sheets and OSHA guidelines for proper PPE.
• When working with or around hazardous chemicals, ALWAYS refer to the appropriate MSDS
sheets and OSHA guidelines for information on allowable personal exposure levels, proper
respiratory protection and handling recommendations.
• If there is a risk of arc or flash, technicians MUST put on all necessary Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) in accordance with NFPA70E for arc/flash protection PRIOR to servicing the
unit.
Failure to follow recommendations could result in death or serious injury.

WARNING
Hazardous Voltage w/Capacitors!
Disconnect all electric power, including remote disconnects and discharge all motor start/run
capacitors before servicing. Follow proper lockout/tagout procedures to ensure the power
cannot be inadvertently energized. Verify with an appropriate voltmeter that all capacitors have
discharged. Failure to disconnect power and discharge capacitors before servicing could result in
death or serious injury.

Introduction
Eaton/Cutler-Hammer has recommended adding fans to their “IT” Solid State Starter modules
provided with Trane CenTraVac chillers. Trane has obtained free IT starter cooling fan kits from
Eaton for a limited number of shipped units with T801 solid state starters.

Discussion
Eaton advises that in order to optimize the reliability of the starter, the IT Solid State Starter
modules on affected units should be upgraded with their EMM18 fan kit in order to lower the
temperature around the IT control board to less than 50 degrees Celsius.
Some starter failures and erroneous fault codes have been attributed to control board malfunction
as the result of exposure to ambient temperatures above its 50°C rating. The EMM18 fan moves
air directly across the control board of the IT starter and significantly lowers internal starter module
temperatures around the control board.
There are two styles of fan kit available for the IT solid state starter:
• Standard mounting—Cutler-Hammer fan EMM18 (this is also Trane part # KIT15539). This fan
fits all IT T801 starter modules of frame sizes “R” and “T”, and some modules of frame sizes “U”
and “V”.
• Special mounting—Cutler-Hammer front-faced mounting fan for ITs. This fan fits “U” and “V”
frame IT starter applications that have been found to have very limited space available for fan
installation.

 Refer to the list of affected units (see Table 1) to determine which type of fan is needed for a
particular chiller starter.
For units located in equipment rooms with non-air-conditioned spaces and where ambient
temperatures are very high (90°F [32.2°C] and above), it is recommended that enclosure fan kit (part
number KIT15538) also be installed. Offices must purchase this part on their own, but the labor to
install it is reimburseable on this retrofit if done at the same time as the EMM18 fan kit. Units still
under factory warranty may file a material claim for this part. Units with motor RLAs of 961 or higher
already have factory installed enclosure fans.

Units Affected
Only the units listed in Table 1 may have labor claimed against this bulletin. This bulletin does not
affect any solid state starters shipped after September 3, 2009.

Repair Authorization
WARNING
Hazardous Voltage w/Capacitors!
Disconnect all electric power, including remote disconnects and discharge all motor start/run
capacitors before servicing. Follow proper lockout/tagout procedures to ensure the power
cannot be inadvertently energized. Verify with an appropriate voltmeter that all capacitors have
discharged. Failure to disconnect power and discharge capacitors before servicing could result in
death or serious injury.

PROD-SVB06A-EN or PROD-SVB06A-FR.

At the earliest opportunity, order and install fan kits into the starters of affected units. Refer to
Table 2 to determine quantities needed.
1. Fill out the “IT Fan Request Form,” p. 12. The form must be completed fully and accurately in
order for fans to be sent.
2. Fax the completed form to Betty Maier of La Crosse Technical Service at 608-787-3024 or scan
the completed form and submit it by e-mail to bmaier@trane.com.
Note: Only those units shown on the list of affected units are eligible to receive fans via this
bulletin.
3. Install the EMM18 fan onto the IT starter using the literature that ships with the fan kit.
Notes:
• Installation instructions are included with the fan kits. The 24 V IT fans are wired to the control
terminal block of the IT. Regardless of fan type, the 24 V IT fan should be wired with its red wire
to the “1” terminal and its black wire to the “-” terminal.
• In some installations, the starter may have inadequate clearance alongside it to allow for the
installation of the fan (see Figure 1, right photo). For these cases, a special fan kit will be needed.
Eaton has developed a modified fan kit that allows for alternate mounting. The retrofit list will
identify starters in your territory that need these special kits.
