Welcome to Elite Soccer’s Ultimate Coaching Sessions, a new way of accessing Decisive
training sessions from the world’s best professional soccer coaches. defending
We have identified 25 of our favourite sessions from the Elite Soccer archive and
compiled them into five manuals, each looking at a different key area of play:
Attacking, Defending, Midfield, Goalkeeping and Fitness.
In this issue, Ultimate Defending Sessions, each of the training plans is written

Roberto Mancini believes it is vital that his defenders are strong and decisive. His Shot
training session shows us how he instils those qualities in his players, and it must blocking
be working for him as his Manchester City side conceded fewer goals than any other
team in their 2011-2012 Premier League winning season.
Brian McDermott’s Reading side put together a great run to clinch the 2011-2012
Championship title. Here, his high-energy shot-blocking drill shows the kind of
attention to detail that contributed to that success. 7
Nigel Adkins identifies that one of the keys to a solid defence is the ability to deal with Nigel
crosses effectively and efficiently. Here he gives us a training session that contributed Adkins
to his promotion winning Saints side achieving a club record run of clean sheets. Southampton

Steve Bruce was one of Manchester United’s most celebrated centre halves and Defending
knows his craft inside out. In this session he shows us how defenders need to prepare crosses
for occasions when they find themselves detached from their defensive partners.
And Dave Jones presents a session that drills and organises the back four as a solid, 9
settled unit, focussing on the core principle of when to show an opponent inside and Steve
when to show him outside. Bruce
