Error Recognition

Error Types:

1. Verb (wrong tense, subject-verb agreement, modal, infinitive, gerund, wrong form)
2. Noun (countable/ non-countable, wrong form, pronoun, confusion)
3. Modifier (incorrect adjective, incorrect adverb, wrong determiner (this/these))
4. Conjunction (wrong use of words (and, but, as, because))
5. Preposition (wrong preposition (about, after, at, before, for, from, in, of, to, by, etc))
6. Extra word (unnecessary words)
7. Missing word (need for necessary words)

1) Verb Error Examples:


 Wrong tense: yesterday everyone is…  yesterday everyone was…
 Subject-verb agreement: everyone were…  everyone was…
 Wrong form: he imagination how…  he imagined how…

2) Noun Error Examples:


 Wrong form: it’s a long driving from Paris to Amsterdam.  it’s a long drive from...
 Confusion: the insurance police offered full coverage…  the insurance policy…

3) Modifier Error examples:


 Adverb: thank you for the invitation, but unfortunate I will…  …, but unfortunately I will…
 Determiner: I could deliver these opening address at…  I could deliver the opening address…

4) Conjunction Error Examples:


 We offer training programs because are customized for each client.  We offer training programs
that are customized for each client.
 The successful candidate should have a strong background in economics but business studies. 
The successful candidate should have a strong background in economics and business studies.
Or
The successful candidate should have a strong background in economics or business studies.

5) Preposition Error Examples:


 We should pay to our airline tickets at least two weeks before leaving.  We should pay for our
airline tickets at least two weeks before leaving.
 Satellite television offers viewers a variety of programs at many different languages.  Satellite
television offers viewers a variety of programs in many different languages.

6) Extra-word Errors Examples:


 The mailman he comes …  the mailman comes…
 To be complete the project on time, Mr Yehia and his staff worked late hours.  To complete the
project on time, Mr Yehia and his staff worked late hours.

7) Missing-word Error:
 He took a taxi to the reception because he expected that no parking spaces be available.  He took
a taxi to the reception because he expected that no parking spaces would be available.
 Because the convention was held at the beach, it seemed more like relaxing vacation than work. 
