DRUG INFORMATION
Drug Classification: Prokinetic Agents Generic Name: Prucalopride
Dosage: 1mg TAB OD Brand Name: Motegrity, Resolor, Resotran
Route of Administration: PO

MODE/ MECHANISM OF ACTION


Prucalopride acts as a selective stimulator of the 5-HT4 receptors while having no interaction with hERG
channel or 5-HT1 receptors which reduces significantly the cardiovascular risk found in other similar drugs.

INDICATION CONTRAINDICATION
Prucalopride is indicated for the treatment of chronic Intestinal perforation or obstruction due to the
idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults. CIC is one of structural or functional disorder of gut wall,
the most common chronic functional gastrointestinal obstructive ileus, severe inflammatory conditions of
disorders worldwide. The diagnosis of this agent is
the intestinal tract (e.g., Crohn disease, ulcerative
very hard and it can be confirmed if the patient
experience at least two of the following: colitis, toxic megacolon/megarectum)

• Straining during more than 25% of the bowel


movements.
• Lumpy or hard stools in 25% of the bowel
movements.
• Sensation of incomplete evacuation in more
than 25% of all bowel movements.
• Sensation of anorectal blockage or
obstruction in more than 25% of the bowel
movements.
SIDE EFFECT AND ADVERSE REACTION
SIDE EFFECTS:

• headache
• abdominal pain or bloating
• nausea
• diarrhea
• dizziness
• vomiting
• gas
• fatigue

ADVERSE REACTIONS:

• unusual changes in mood or behavior,


• thoughts of hurting yourself,
• trying to hurt yourself, or
• suicide.

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS/ HEALTH TEACHINGS


NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:
• Make sure the doctor knows if you have trouble sleeping, get upset easily, have a big increase in
energy, or start to act reckless.
• Also tell the doctor if you have sudden or strong feelings, such as feeling nervous, angry, restless,
violent, or scared.

HEALTH TEACHING
• Instruct patient to take prucalopride as directed. Advise patient to read Patient Information before
starting therapy and with each Rx refill in case of changes.
• Instruct patient to notify health care professional of all Rx or OTC medications, vitamins, or herbal
products being taken and consult health care professional before taking any new medications.
