Part 1 OCE Worksheet

Use this worksheet to help you organize your responses for Part 1 of the OCE. You can use these as you work through the practice cases. In time,
we hope that you memorize these. If needed, you can use this during your mock OCE, however, we suggest going purely off memory for the mock
to simulate the real exam.

CASE 1

Accepting the Patient

 Am I capable of providing the services this patient is seeking and are the services within my scope of practice?
o If yes, describe the services being sought after, how they fall within your scope of practice and why you feel you are competent to
carry these services out.
1. When determining if I should accept this patient for physiotherapy services, I would self-reflect to see if the patient is
seeking services that fall under a physiotherapist's scope of practice.
2. The patient (insert disorder/disease and chief complaints).
3. They require an assessment to investigate their current status as well as treatment to assist in managing their (insert chief
complaints).
4. The assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of their current issues fall within my scope of practice and, through my formal
physiotherapy training, I am competent to assess and treat them.
o If no, describe the services being sought after, why they do not fall within your scope of practice and why you feel you are not
competent to carry these services out.
 Provide options for appropriate referrals.

Informed Consent
 How am I determining who is providing consent?

 What information am I providing to gain consent? (i.e., the proposed plan - including informed consent elements)

Part 1 OCE Worksheet

Clinical Impression & Recommendations
 Has a diagnosis been provided in the case?
o YES:
 What are the patient’s impairments and how have they impacted function?
 Are the signs/symptoms presented in the case indicative of someone who is recovering on a normal timeline or someone
who is delayed in their recovery?
 Will the patient benefit from PT intervention?
 If yes, what are 2-3 general treatment recommendations?
 What meaningful tasks do I want my patient to be able to return to?
o NO:
 What is my primary PT diagnosis and rationale?
 What are 2-3 differential diagnoses?
 Will the patient benefit from PT intervention?
 If yes, what are 2-3 general treatment recommendations?
 What meaningful tasks do I want my patient to be able to return to?

CASE 2

The chart below demonstrates how the elements within Case 2 are intertwined and tied back to the problem list.

Developing a Treatment Plan

 Start by creating a problem list in the chart.
 List 2-3 treatments for each problem and WHY you chose it.
o Treatments should be based on impairments noted in the case.

Developing Goals and Patient Collaboration

 Next, pick ~3 short-term goals and ~2 long-term goals that are associated with the impairments in the problem list.
 Goals should be time-bound and patient-centered (i.e., based on impairment/challenges present in the case).

Collaboration, Consultation and Referral to Others

 Then, determine who you would want to collaborate or consult with or who you would want to refer the patient to.
 Consider the problems in the case and who may be able to assist with managing these issues.
o Is the patient already working with another individual(s)?
 If yes, how and why would you consult and collaborate with that individual(s)?

o Should another individual be involved in the patient’s care?

 If yes, who would you refer the patient to and why?
 How would you collaborate with this individual moving forward?

Part 1 OCE Worksheet

Monitoring, Reassessing and Modifying the Plan
 Monitor:
o Pick outcome measures you could use to monitor the impairments in the problem list.
 Reassess:
o State how often you would reassess using the outcome measure.
 Modifying:
o State how you would adjust/change the treatment plan based on the findings.
 How could you progress and/or regress the treatment plan and WHY?
 Look back at the treatment options for the problem listed to see what/how you could alter the treatment plan.

Promoting Self-Management
 Look at the treatments listed and pick 2-4 treatments that the patient can perform on their own and, for each, explain:
o What you are asking them to do.
o Why you are asking them to do it.
o How they will monitor themselves to ensure they are safe/effective.
 Verbalize 3 strategies that you could use to motivate your patient to promote-self management.

Discharge Planning and Transitioning Care

 Consider each of the following (PEAR) based on your case example:
o Patient milestones - what milestones does the patient need to reach to be able to be discharged from physiotherapy?
o Education - what additional information should you provide the patient to ensure a safe discharge from physiotherapy?
o Arrange supports - what arrangements need to be made at home and within the community?
o Report - what information needs to be provided in a discharge or transition of care report?
