1
What I Need To Know

Welcome to your learning module in Mathematics 3!

This module was developed to help you improve your ability
in converting common units of measure from larger to smaller unit and
vice versa with the help of your parents/guardian or elder brother or
sister.
We hope this material will be of great help to you!

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
1) Visualize, represent and convert common units of measure from
larger to smaller unit and vice versa: meter and centimeter, kilogram
and gram, liter and milliliter.

What I Know

Let us determine how much you already knew about visualizing,

representing and converting common units of measure from larger to
smaller unit and vice versa: meter and centimeter, kilogram and gram,
liter and milliliter.

A. Fill in the blanks with the correct equivalent measure. Choose

your answer in the box.
6 500 8
6000 12 10

1. 5 meters = _______ centimeters

2. 600 centimeters = _______ meters
3. 8000grams = ________ kilograms

2
4. 6 kilograms = _______ grams
5. 12 000mL = _____ Liters

B. Convert the following to the indicated unit of measure.

1. 800 centimeters = ______ meters

2. 12.5 meters = _______ centimeters
3. 15 000 grams = ________kilograms
4. _______ grams = 25 kilograms
5. 2500 milliliters + 4500 milliliters = ______Liters

What’s In

To be able to visualize, represent and convert common units of

measure, you should have mastered the different standard units or
appropriate unit of measures in measuring the distance, weight and
capacity of objects.

In Linear Measurement we use meters and centimeters.

1 meter = 100 centimeter

Ex. 2 meters = 200 centimeters
In Mass Measurement we use kilograms and grams.

1 kilogram = 1000 grams

Ex. 3 kilograms
Ex = 3000 grams

In Capacity Measurement we use liters and milliliters.

1 liter = 1000 milliliter

Ex. 5 liters = 5000 milliliters

3
What’s New

Look at the picture below then read and understand the problem.
Janz and Jayden measured the length of their dinning table.
Janz found it to be 1.5 meter long, while Jayden said that it is 150 cm
long.
Whose measurement is correct? Why?
Janz and Jayden’s measurement is correct because 1.5 meter is
equal to 150 cm.

Janz’s measurement = 1.5 m

Jayden’s measurement = 150 cm

4
B. Which is heavier, a kilo of mangoes or 1000 grams of strawberries?

1 kilogram of mangoes 1000 grams of strawberries

C. Chloe drank 1 liter of water while Keisha drank 1000

milliliters of water. Who drank more water? Chloe or Keisha?

1 liter of water drank by Chloe 1000 mL of water

drank by keisha

5
What is It?

In this lesson, you will learn about visualizing, representing and

converting common units of measure from larger to smaller unit and vice
versa: meter and centimeter, kilogram and gram, liter and milliliter.

LESSON 1: CONVERTING COMMON UNITS OF LINEAR MEASURE

Meter (m) and Centimeter (cm)

100 cm

To convert meter (m) to centimeter (cm)

Larger unit to a smaller unit = multiply the number of meters
by 100.

Janz’s measurement 1.5m Jayden’s measurement 150cm

6
Whose measurement is correct? Why?
Janz and Jayden’s measurement is correct because 1.5 meter is equal
to 150 cm.

➢ Convert 1.5m to centimeters

➢ Multiply 1.5 x 100 = 150
Answer: 1.5 meters = 150 centimeters

Examples:
1. Convert 2 meters to centimeters
➢ Multiply 2 x 100 = 200)
Answer: 2 meters = 200 centimeters

2. Convert 6.5 or 6 ½ meters to centimeters

➢ Multiply 6.5 x 100 = 650
Answer: 6.5 meters = 650 centimeters

To convert centimeter (cm) to meter (m)

Smaller unit to a Larger unit = divide the number of
centimeters by 100.

Examples:
1. Convert 300 centimeters to meters
➢ Divide 300 ÷ 100 = 3
Answer: 300 centimeters = 3 meters

2. Convert 550 centimeters to meter

➢ Divide 550 ÷ 100 = 5.5 or 5 ½
Answer: 550 centimeters = 5.5 or 5 ½ meters

7
Assessment 1
Fill each blank with the equivalent measure.
1. 12 meters = ______ centimeters
2. 900 centimeters = ______ meters
3. ______ meters = 1,050 centimeters

LESSON 2: CONVERTING COMMON UNITS OF MASS

MEASURE ( kilogram and gram )

To convert kilograms (kg) to grams (g)

Larger unit to a Smaller unit = multiply the number of kilograms by 1000.

1 Kilogram of mangoes 1000 grams of strawberries

Which is heavier, a kilo of mangoes or 1000 grams of strawberries?

Answer: A kilo of mangoes is equal to 1000 grams of strawberries.

➢ Convert 1 kilogram to grams

➢ Multiply 1 x 1000= 1 000 grams
Answer : 1 kilogram = 1000 grams

8
Examples:
1. Convert 3 kilograms to grams
➢ Multiply 3 x 1 000 = 3 000
Answer : 3 kilograms = 3 000 grams

2. Convert 4.5 or 4 ½ kilograms to grams

➢ Multiply 4.5 x 1000 = 4, 500
Answer : 4.5 kilograms = 4, 500 grams

To convert grams (g) to kilograms (kg)

Smaller unit to a Larger unit = divide the number of grams by 1000.

Examples:
1. Convert 4,000 grams to kilograms
➢ Divide 4000 ÷ 1000 = 4
Answer: 4000 grams = 4 kilograms

2. Convert 5,500 grams to kilograms

➢ Divide 5,500 ÷ 1000 = 5.5 or 5 ½
Answer: 5,500 grams = 5.5 or 5 ½ kilograms

Assessment 2
Fill in the blanks with the correct equivalent measure.
1. 14 kilograms = _______ grams
2. 23 kilograms = _______grams
3. 25 000 grams = _______kilograms

9
LESSON 3: CONVERTING COMMON UNITS OF CAPACITY
MEASURE ( Liter and milliliter )

To convert liter (L) to milliliter (mL)

Larger unit to a Smaller unit = multiply the number of Liters by 1000.

1 liter of water drank by Chloe 1000 mL of water

drank by keisha

Who drank more water? Chloe or Keisha?

Answer: Keisha and Chloe drank the same amount of water beacause
1liter is equal to 1000 milliliters.
➢ Convert 1 liter to milliliter
➢ Multiply 1 x 1000 = 1000
Answer: 1 liter = 1000 mL
Examples:
1. Convert 9 Liters to milliliters
Multiply 9 x 1000 = 9 000
2. Covert 7.5 Liters to milliliters

10
Multiply 7.5 x 1000 = 7 500
Answer: 7.5 Liters = 7 500 milliliters

To convert milliliters (mL) to Liters (L)

Smaller unit to a Larger unit = we divide the number of milliliters by 1000.

Assessment 3 . Convert the following to the indicated unit of measure.

1. 10, 000 mL = _______L
2. 18, 000 m L = ________L
3. _______ mL = 26 L
