1. What is the image formed?

2. Are you familiar with this image?
b. Development HUMAN BIOCULTURAL EVOLUTION
EVOLUTION is a natural process of biological changes occurring in a population
across successive generation. It help us identifying and analyze man’s physiological
development and eventually the emergence of different society.
HOMONIDS
 “Manlike Primates”
 Development of different species of primates were able to evolve in
40 millions years ago.
 There have been various relics of hominids can be describe as
manlike primates; Ramapithecus, Lucy, and Australopithecus.
 Lucy is the first and oldest ape way back 40 millions years ago.
HOMO HABILIS
 “Handy Man”
 The apelike men who first to used stone tools as a weapons and
protection of their enemies.
 Recognized as the First true human
 Lived about 2.4 to 1.4 million years ago
HOMO ERECTUS
 “The Upright Man”
 Believed to be the first man that lived 500,00 years ago in Asia,
Africa and Europe.
 Could walk straight with almost the same brain with modern man.
 Made refine stone tools for hunting and weapons for protection of the
enemies.
 Major discovered fossils:
a. Pithecanthropus Erectus “Java Man” – discovered by Eugene Dubois
at Trinil, Java, Indonesia in 1891.
b. Sinanthropus Pekinensis “Peking Man” – discovered at Choukoutien
village, Beijing, China in 1929.
HOMO SAPIENS
 “The Thinking Man”
 Direct descendant of modern man who lived 250,000 yrs. ago
 Had similar physical description with modern man.
 Primitive men whose dependent on hunting, fishing and agriculture.
 They buried their dead, used tools and had religion.
 Homo Sapiens subspecies:
a. Neanderthal Man – discovered in Neanderthal valley near
Dusseldorf, Germany in 1856, lived in cave, dependent on hunting
and fishing.
b. Cro-Magnon Man – discovered by a French archaeologist Louis
Lartet in Cro Magnon Cave in Southern France. As a prehistoric man,

they were the first to produce art in cave painting and crafting
decorated tools and accessories.
FOUR BIOCULTURAL CAPACITY OF HUMAN TO ADAPT
CULTURE
1. Our Thinking Capacity
 The primary biological component of humans that allowed for culture
is the developed brain.
 It has the necessary parts for facilitating pertinent skills such as
speaking, touching, feeling, seeing, and smelling.
 humans have a larger brain, weighing 1.4 kg. causing humans able to
create survival skills that helped them adapt to their environment and
outlive their less adaptive biological relatives.
2. Our Gripping Capacity

 The hands of human has digits (fingers) that are straights.

 The thumb of human is proportionately longer than those of other
primates.
 These characteristics of the human hand allowed for two types of grip
“power and precision”.
a. Power Grip enabled humans to wrap the thumb and fingers on an
objects; it became the cornerstone of our capacity to hold tool firmly
for hunting and other activities.
b. Precision Grip enabled humans to hold and pick objects steadily
using fingers. This capacity was crucial for tool-making activities.
3. Our Speaking Capacity
 As the brain is the capacity source of humans’ capacity to
comprehend sound and provide meaning to it.
 Humans have longer vocal tract compared with chimpanzee.
 A longer vocal tract means that there is a longer vibration surface,
allowing human to produce a wider array of sounds than
chimpanzees.
 The tongue of human is more flexible than of a chimpanzee, allowing
for more control in making sounds.
4. Our Walking/Standing Capacity
 Primates have two forms of locomotion: bipedalism and
quadropedalism.
 Bipedalism is the capacity to walk and stand on two feet.
 Quadropedalism uses all four limbs.
 Apes are semi-bipedalism, humans are the only fully bipedal
primates.
 Being bipedal, humans gained more capacity to move while carrying
objects with their free hands.
 More capacity or productivity with their hands like hunting and
foraging.

c. Engagement GROUP ACTIVITY:

Direction: Make a short scenario of how Homonids, Homo Habilis, Homo
Erectus and Homo Sapiens live million years ago.
