 Normal Stress

Normal Stress is the stress that occurs when a material is loaded by axial force.
The axial force itself is a force acting perpendicular to the cross section.

so when we put the prosthesis and orthosis device on to the patient, there is a
pressure force generated by the patient that leads downward. when there is a
downward force, there is a repulsive force from the bottom to the top.
so it is very important for us when making motion aids to calculate normal
stress so that the tool is strong to withstand the pressure.
 Shear Stress
Shear stress is the stress that occurs because there are two opposite and non-
straight direction of the plane of an object. This tension is common in the knee
of the prosthesis because the area occurs in two different directions of pressure
so that the resulting friction is not too severe.
We must calculate the stress so that when the patient walks it is not too difficult
to maintain balance.
 Strain
Strain is the amount of deformation an object experiences in the direction of the
applied force, divided by the object's original dimensions.

The deformation relationship in terms of solid length is given below. Strain

occurs after there is a pulling force or when an object is pressed too hard it will
stretch.
