SOCIAL STUDIES 9 ADDENDUM TO ACCOMPANY THE OFFLINE COURSE JANUARY 2010-01-11 The purpose of this document is to assist the students as they work through the Social Studies 9 offline course. Students will not be required to complete all the activities that appear in the coil booklets and the assignment booklets. This document outlines the work that the students will be expected to complete. INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN Components: Module: There are five modules in Social Studies 9. Each module is developed around a major learning outcome. An issue question for the module is introduced to the student. A module is comprised of two sections. Each section has 2 or more lessons (students are expected to complete all the lessons in each section). Also included in each module is an introduction, a module challenge and a module assessment (that students are expected to complete). Module Introduction: The module introduction previews the content that will be presented in the module and in each of the two sections in the module. (Students must read these introductions). Module Challenge: The Module Challenge requires the student to take what was learned in the module and present it in a creative and informative activity.

Module Assessment: The Module Assessment provides practice for the provincial achievement test. It includes 15 multiple-choice questions and a written response. These tests are available in Quizzone and students will be expected to write them after the module has been completed and marked. Section Glossary: The Section Glossary contains all pertinent vocabulary that was highlighted in each lesson of the section. (Students are responsible to become familiar with this vocabulary). Get Focused: The Get Focused serves as the lesson introduction and sets the stage for the lesson by making connections to your prior learning and personal knowledge. You are asked to complete and activity with a partner, friend, peer, or a family member. The Get Focused also lists non-graded activities and graded assessment pieces you will be required to complete in the lesson. Explore: The Explore provides you with the background information, textbook references (Read), and multimedia (Watch and Listen). The Explore also provides you with the information needed to complete the activities and assignments at the lesson level. Read: The Read component directs you to read from the textbook. Watch and Listen: The Watch and Listen component includes both passive and interactive multimedia content (e.g., video, audio, and interactive Flash activities).

SOCIAL STUDIES 9 PORTFOLIO You will be required to create a portfolio to organize activities and assignments. It demonstrates your efforts, achievements, self-reflections, and progress. You will be expected to put all their work into the portfolio. Create a file folder on your desktop or in your documents and label it Social Studies Portfolio. You can also keep a binder or folder on your desk for this purpose. There are a number of activities and assignments that may not be evaluated by your teacher but are required to support your inquiry. All lessons, module challenge and module assessment will be evaluated for marks.
