How many times have we looked away when a
little child has come begging on our car windows?
Yet at times we have looked out and seen them
laugh out loud or do a spontaneous jig! These
children are incredibly resilient. We can see it in
their shining eyes and the very fact that they
survive on the roads that we are afraid to let our 18
year olds step onto.
These children look at their life and say "This isn't
good enough; I deserve better". On an estimated
average 51,000 of children reach Delhi annually –
they are running away from poverty, a drunken
father, a cruel step mother or just because they think
life would be better in the bright lights. These are the
children we work with – help nurture their dreams,
make them realize that their fate can be crafted by
their own hearts and hands and a firm resolve.
Some of their lives turn out like happy lingering
dreams – a boy from the railway tracks selected to
spend 6 months photographing the reconstruction
of New York's World Trade Center, another 2
winning scholarships to complete engineering
courses, 2 boys and 2 girls studying at Lawrence

School, Sonawar. Its like the proverbial diamond
buried in grime of poverty, tarnished by the acid of
mistrust and prejudice, being cut to perfection.
Theatre, dance, sports or academic study, our kids
excel in it all. If there is a magic in our work, it lies
in the fact that the most basic of rights for children
– a safe place to sleep, a kind word at lunch – can
transform injured souls into soaring lives.
Our work has expanded well beyond our early
plans, staggeringly we reached out to 5866
children this year.
And yet, we have only scratched the surface. Millions
of dreams need our help to stay aloft. Be with us.

Its their trade mark…..the bright impish
smile…..this smile says ' you cannot break my
spirit'…. Life may have served them the rawest
deal….. they have nothing that you and me possess
– no family to claim them, no teacher to mentor
them, no space to call home, no security from
slitherings of crime and drugs, no hot healthy
meals, no one to bandage the oozing wound…..
living on and of the streets, they are India's
tomorrow fighting a moment to moment struggle
to survive. And these children survive with a
smile…… with a resilient spirit!
In 1988, Mira Nair's film Salaam Bombay rendered
a raw depiction of the vulnerabilities of living on
the streets….. It struck a chord in the hearts of
compassionate citizens, who identified the mine of
potential in India's street children. This small group
lost no time to create a space in the form of a Trust
where young street boys and girls could feel secure
and could breathe hope. Keeping in tandem with
the nature of the children, the name 'Salaam
Baalak Trust' which literally translates into salute
the child seemed befitting.
For the past 25 years, Delhi-based Salaam Baalak
Trust (SBT) has been dedicated to the care and
protection of street children, regardless of caste,
color, creed or religion by living or working in and
around railway station, at crowded bus stops,
slums, congested business and tourist areas. From
3 staff and 25 children on a balcony of Ground
Reserve Police at the New Delhi Railway station,
SBT has now grown to over 150 staff, providing
support services in Delhi & NCR region. SBT
currently functions through 13 Contact Points/ Day
Care Centers and 5 Shelter Homes, which provide
a holistic child development package. SBT also
manages 1098- emergency Child helpline is a toll
free number to reach out to children in distress at
any point of time.
Mission
SBT aims to provide a sensitive and caring
environment to street & working children and
other children on the margins of society. It
seeks to dissolve the barriers that rob children
of the opportunity to realize their rights.
This 25 year young organization has already
provided support to more than 50,000 children
from all over the country and abroad. On an
average, SBT's team reaches and protects over
5,000 children annually. While a large chunk of
children are re-united successfully with their
families, SBT becomes family for young lives who
have no one to return to. Though a family can never
be replaced, a child friendly environment, access to
basic child rights, and mentorship of staff at SBT
provides an unique support system for the children.
As a result, children from SBT are empowered young
citizens with their heart in the right place.
Children who have flown from the SBT nest have
gone on to establish meaningful lives for
themselves. Majority is married, and can afford to
send their children to good schools. Professionally,
they have carved a niche for themselves, be it the
performing arts such as puppeteers, dance and
theatre or the creative genre such as film making
and photography or the corporate world where they
are absorbed into companies such as Matrix, Pizza
Hut, JLL, Teamwork Productions, DS Constructions
(Toll Plaza), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, VLCC, and
Devyani Hospitality Group.

 Overview of the year 2012-2013
As the number of children on the streets increases
with each passing year, SBT braces itself to rise to
the occasion every time. Our mission is simple…to
be there to wipe a tear, plant a dream, and
empower to transform bitter reality. With this in
mind, this year, we touched 5866 young lives as we
increased our reach at the community level,
innovated on care plans at the shelter homes, and
widened the scope of vocations. And as we look
back, all the hard work has paid off!
This year we reached out to two new communities
through Contact Points (day care centers). A centre
at Kailash Nagar and Tulsi Nagar each started this
year with emphasis on education and nutrition. So
now we have 13 contact points and five shelter
homes – two for boys and two for girls, and one
open shelter home for boys.
Achievements for year 2012-13: SBT's USP has
been the ability to discern hidden talent in each
child and encourage children to excel. This
mentorship by the Trustees and SBT team results in
having to add another cupboard to house the
innumerable awards and trophies!!

 Rose Home: a garden of roses (girl's children home under J.J. Act)
Rose Home was initiated with the generous
support of Give 2 Asia in March 2010. It started
with eight girls and sheltered eighty seven girls this

Apart from engaging itself into mainstreaming
children at the home; it is also active in restoring
girls back to their families. The programs at the
Home have been intensively designed to cater to
the development needs of children. This year Rose
Home provided shelter and care to 87 girls. Nine
local tours were organized to Akshardham, Doll
museum, Chhattarpur, National Gallery of modern
art, India gate etc. 42 children went to Ooty for the

 Health Program
Living on the streets, children are exposed to
innumerable infections and diseases. Due to the
lack of proper guidance, theses children have little
or no understanding of sanitation and hygiene. A
large number of street children take up drugs and
have poor eating habit. Thus when a child comes in
contact with SBT, our first and immediate effort is
to take care of his/ her medical needs.
Headed by the Medical Coordinator, we have an
efficient team of medical social workers in each
shelter home. We also have a core team of visiting
doctors who are always available at nay and every
emergency. Our health program includes a number
of components which take care of the special
needs of these children. These include an
awareness of safe sexual practices, in the absence
of which they are susceptible to STD's and
HIV/AIDS; interventions to deal with substance
abuse, and mental health programs. SBT has
developed collaborations with the other hospitals
and medical centers in this regard.
This year we conducted 12 health camps.
Subsequently, SBT has successfully conducted 768
eye checkups, 201 dental checkups, and 189 HIV
tests for street children.

Mental Health Program
Living on streets, children are exposed to every
type of abuse. By the time these young lives reach
us, they are bruised and suffer the vestiges of
abuse. Aware of their special psychological needs,
SBT has a full-fledged team of qualified
psychologist, mentored by a leading psychiatrist.
The children get a friend to listen to and it caters to
their lost need of being heard or appreciated.
The counselor takes care of individual case studies
and conducts interesting group activities with the
children. The objectives of this program are
primarily as follows.

Life skills represent the psycho-social skills that
determine valued behavior and include reflective
skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking,

the changing needs, these modules are constantly
revised and updated. Last year, we conducted 117
life skills sessions, and we can now emphatically
state that they have had a huge positive impact,
which is tangible in increased self-awareness, less
risky behavior, greater ability to deal with peer
pressure, and a greater commitment to their future
and their careers.
Volunteer Program
SBT's volunteer program is specifically designed for
better facilitation of volunteers and interns. The
process of induction of a volunteer starts with a city
walk, goes onto meeting with volunteer coordinator,
visiting project sites and finally imbedding into our
activities. Each volunteer receives an information
docket, with the details of projects, contact
information, code of conduct and emergency
volunteering at SBT. The core requirement is passion
and commitment towards mission of SBT coupled
with a commitment of minimum four weeks.
In 2012 -13, about 162 volunteers and interns from
18 different countries worked with us and about
two-third of them were foreigners. During the year,
we worked with about 10 volunteer partner
organizations and 16 educational institutes in India
and abroad, including college students from CIT and
CQ University in Australia and from University
College of Dublin, Ireland. Employees from Actis,
Accenture, American Express, Citibank, Maruti
Suzuki and Aon Hewitt have also contributed their
time and skills to our work.
We encourage creative ideas and projects, which
will have a positive impact on the lives of our
children Volunteers work with us in the areas of
education, mental and medical health, life skills
development, documentation and communication,
creative expression (includes sports and talent
development), and computer skills. Many volunteers
have also supported us in raising resources, both
financial and materials, especially after returning to

 City Walk Program
Brain child of a former British volunteer, John
Thompson, City Walk is an innovative program of
SBT. The objective of the tour is to sensitize people
and uniquely engage them in the lives of children
in distress. The walk guides are former street kids
who share the journey of their own lives. Thus, the
walk provides an opportunity for the young people
to improve their communication and speaking
skills. The proceeds go directly to the Trust, and we
acknowledge every contribution that we receive.
The fiscal year 2012-13 was a significant period as
it showed growth of City Walk in many aspects.
It's very encouraging for us to know that during
this period, we did about 593 walks and sensitized
about 4849 people from across the world (an
increase of 18% from last year) to the lives of street
children in India as well as their stories of survival
and success. In the months of November and
January, we had about 580 people and did 72 walks
respectively, the highest number so far. The lowest
number of people was in the month of June, about
165 guests in 31 walks conducted.
People from all around the globe (from about 70
countries) took part in City Walk, though majority
was from USA, UK, India, Australia and Germany.

The Walk is mentioned in all major Travel
Guidebooks (like Lonely Planet, Love Delhi, Rough
Guide and others) and we worked with about 30-
35 Travel Agents, both domestic and international.
The guides besides doing the Walk are also
pursuing their education. In June, Satyender got
selected for US scholarship and is presently
pursuing a one-year Certificate course in
Information Technology (IT) specializing in
multimedia from City College of San Francisco.
Satyender is the 3rd guide in the last three years to
be selected for US scholarship and with this City
Walk has made a hat trick! Two guides - Tabrez and
Noor, got selected for CQU scholarship 2012 to
pursue higher education. Tabrez is doing Diploma
course in Aviation and Tourism from prestigious-
The Bird Academy in New Delhi and Noor is
pursuing Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com) from
Delhi University. Some guides are also learning
foreign languages such as German and Spanish.
During this period we also had quite some media
coverage of the Walk by the BBC World, the Hindu,

Italian newspapers. With help from volunteers, we

A new Walk-The Old Delhi Walk
In January 2012, we also expanded the
programme by developing a new heritage walk
in the Old Delhi area. In this 3-hour walk, more
emphasis is given on the history, architecture
and life inside the walled city of Shahjahanabad.
Guests will have a chance to walk through alleys
in the heart of the city to visit six hidden places
as well as having a rickshaw-ride to spice
market, chai stops, rooftop views and ending at
one of SBT's biggest children's homes. We have
received good feedback from guests on this
walk and are hopeful that gradually this will also
become popular.
Performing Arts Program
Creative and performing arts have been SBT's USP.
We not only use theatre as a therapeutic medium
but it also a platform for our children to exhibit
their talents and carve a niche for themselves. Our
work in this field covers a variety of disciplines,
including street plays, theatre for the stage, dance
and puppetry.
Annual Play: Since 1997, the SBT theatre group has
given a public performance every year. Aside from
acting, the children play a significant role
developing or adapting the script, designing
costumes and producing masks. This year, we
produced a play titled 'Jisne Khoya Usne Paaya'.
Around 45 children participated. It was performed
at Chinmaya auditorium and Apex centre, Gurgaon.
Dance workshops and Street Plays : The theatre
group of SBT created and modified several street
plays on issues like health and hygiene, re-
forestation, child rights, HIV/AIDS, child labor,
diabetes and drugs. The play ' Mein Bhi Ek Bachcha
Hoon' is a great hit in the development circles and
has been performed widely. Our girls and boys
always make us proud every time they participate
in any dance competition. Trained under
professional danseurs, many children from SBT are
professional dancers and choreographers.
Sports Program
Sports activities and interests provide many
positive opportunities for children. The world of
sports mirrors how one can play the game of
school and life. Good athletes stay in the game and
play their best even when they are losing. They
know they will win some and lose some. They
discipline themselves. They practice with gruelling
regularity the necessary skills for their sport.
Education, life accomplishments, creative
contributions in the arts, sciences, business, and
government involve similar perseverance and self-
discipline. Our society is competitive, and we
should teach our children to function in
competition and how to both win and lose as good
sports. Children must learn that winning and losing
are both temporary, and that they can't give up or
quit. Learning to become a team player is also
important for children who may prefer to be the
center of attention.
Under the vigilant supervision of a Sports Teacher,
the children are coached in various forms of sports.
Children who are gifted in any particular sport are
given requisite formal training. Our children have
participated in various sports competitions
organised by Sport Authority of India, India Youth
Soccer Association, and other NGOs. At every
competition our children have always returned
with medals or trophies!

 Vocational Training Program
Vocational training is a critical link for us to
mainstream our children. Children choose a
vocation according to their interests, but the
assessment of a career counselor and staff is
available to help them match their ability with the
training they want to undergo. The popular choices
were web and graphic designing, multi-media
animation, film editing, C++ software, puppetry,
karate, theatre, macramé, photography, beauty
and hair cutting course, travel and tourism.
Job Placement &
Rehabilitation Program
Employment is another crucial step in empowering
our children. After sessions from the career counselor,
children decide upon their careers. For further
guidance, the entire SBT is always available to each
child. Keeping in this spirit, we maintain contact with
these young adults to ensure that they find stability,
and then growth, in their work. During the year, 56
children got rehabilitated and found jobs with
organizations that include Pizza Hut, Matrix clothing,
Vivek Sahni's Design House, City Walk, Ishara Puppet
Theatre Trust, NIIT, Cuts n Flicks, VLCC, Radisson Blue
hotel, Le Meridien, Hilton hotel, Dominoes, Yatra
(travel agency), ULKA advertising agency, Kingdom of
Dreams, and Kids Powered Media.

Boys from DMRC Children Home, post the age
of 18 years, are shifted to Armaan centre. This
year, 18 boys have been shifted. All the boys
are covered under the aftercare program.
Repatriation Program
Families provide children with a sense of belonging
and a unique identity. Families are, or should be, a
source of emotional support and comfort, warmth
and nurturing, protection and security. When we
come into contact with a child, we try to trace
his/her family through a process carefully
developed and implemented by professional
counselors and trained staff members. To minimize
risk for the child, we also enlist the village head
and school headmaster for support and
supervision during the process of reintegrating the
child into the community. This year, 1116 children
were restored to their families. Eight children were
returned to their families in Nepal and six to their
families in Bangladesh.

Plan – SBT's collaboration started in July 2010 with
Plan-Canada and Plan-India support for SBT Girl
child support. This year, Plan supported Arushi for
6 months and Rose Home for a year.
Projects funded by Save The
Children-India
Project on protecting rights of children working in
garment industry in Delhi began in February, 2011
at five contact points in central, east and north
Delhi. The components involved non-formal,
formal education and vocational training. It laid
particular emphasis on awareness, rescues,
leadership training and engaging government
authorities on the issue of child labour.
With the success of the above project, Save The
Children collaborated on two new contact points
this year namely Kailash Nagar and Tulsi Nagar.
While Kailash Nagar is an extension of the project
on protecting rights of children working in garment
industry, at Tulsi Nagar, the project is exclusively for
street children and it focuses on education. A child
friendly centre has been established in the
community which attempts to motivate parents
and children toward education.
The Mobile School is a well-equipped bus with the
basic infrastructure of a classroom along with a
variety of latest teaching and learning aids like VCDs,
books and learning kits to non-school going children
and those living in slum communities, construction
sites, railway stations and similar locales.
Mobile School
This is an initiative started by Starkey Foundation,
which is now funded by Mr. Rohit Narang.
Universal access to quality education is the right of
every child. However reality paints a very different
picture. The experience of working with
underprivileged children living in various slum
communities in Delhi under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan
project of Govt. NCT of Delhi called Chalta Firta
School in 2008, prompted Salaam Baalak Trust
(SBT) take initiative to approach urban
communities to meet the existing challenges in
elementary education. Thus, in 2011, SBT
envisaged taking schools to children who couldn't
go to school- leading to the birth of the Mobile
School as a learning resource corresponding
directly to the educational needs of populations
with low access to school education.
Currently, Mobile School covers needy children in
Mansarovar Vivek Vihar, and Dilshad Garden. At
each of its three stops, the van spends two hours in
activities such as television screening, games, non-
formal education, group discussions, and
counseling on health, hygiene, social skills, and
child rights. At the end of each session,
supplementary nutrition is also provided, and first
aid made available. On Saturdays, our staff
organizes sessions on drug de-addiction, the
problems of girl children, and HIV/AIDS.

 Unfolding a few stories
F or a child whose trust has been broken by her
own father, hope and optimism have no
meaning. Generally, this child 's story would be
dismissed with a patronizing wave. However, SBT's
MHP team has once proved that with warmth and
patience, a child's bitterness can be transformed
and hope can be lit in every little heart.
'V' came to Rose Home last year. She lost her
mother at the age of five. Her mother was not just
the only caregiver for her but also a strong pillar of
support. Her mother's sudden death created
insecurities and a void in her life. V's father was
verbally and sexually abusive towards her. He
would physically torture her. One day, she
summoned up the courage to run away from her
home. She stayed in an N.G.O. for a few years in
Chandigarh .The reason for her being shifted to
Delhi is unknown.
In the first few weeks at Rose Home, V tried to sit
in isolation and was unable to have any peer
interaction. She was unable to trust anyone in the
home and would constantly complain about things.
She did not have any friend neither was she
interested in any activity such as education, sports,
arts etc.

The counsellors at Rose Home took special care to
have frequent individual sessions with her. She
took time to open up and share about her past.
However, she would refuse to come for group
sessions. The counsellors made consistent efforts
to convince her to come for a group session.
The group session was on role play and on creating
stories. It generated interest in her. Gradually, she
started going for therapy session where her
symptoms indicated towards her having Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder. She was also put on
medication for the same by the concerned
Psychiatrist who volunteers with Salaam Baalak
Trust.
Further, art therapy sessions gave her the language
to exhibit her fears, complexes, anger and strengths.
Over a period of 7 months, she showed considerable
improvement in her behaviour and cognition. Her
relations with her peers and the staff improved.
Today, she is studying in Class V through N.I.O.S. and
is quite regular to her classes at the Home. She has
a great grasping power. V aspires to earn a name in
the field of Arts. Now, she is a power house of Rose
Home and an example of undying spirit.
H is faith in himself coupled with a burning
desire to transform the present drove a little
boy away from the familiar homestead and
brought him to Delhi. Chance pummeled him
towards SBT ….. With support from teachers in the
Home, the little boy has been able to transform
from a former rag picker into a promising young
boy excelling at one of India's premium schools.
His father is a daily wage worker and the family
lived in penury. There were many occasions where
he felt suffocated for sleeping empty stomach, not
having enough clothes and books. He was enrolled
in a school which did not pay heed to his interests
in education or any other extra-curricular.
However, G had aspirations to make it successful
and fulfilling. Consequently, G chose to run away
from his home in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh at the
age of nine in the year 2009.
He arrived at the New Delhi Railway station and
lived there for few months. He collected used
plastic bottles and rag picking. He came to SBT
through a contact point.
At DMRC children's home, a group of dedicated
teachers began helping G bridge the gap in his
education. He enjoyed the play way methods of
learning. He would like to sit with the teachers and
share his fears of dealing with books. The teachers
went about supporting him systematically through
learning assessments, non-formal education, and
remedial classes at the Home. He was enrolled in
class 4th in a public school. Through his grit and the
dedication of the SBT's staff, he picked up at school
fairly well. He scored 97% marks in the previous
class.
G has deep interest in mathematics. Mostly, he
scores full marks in the subject. G is very energetic
boy. He is not only good in studies, has equal
interest in sports and dance. He is taking training
for kick boxing. He is the part of the SBT Home's
junior cricket team. He has participated in various
kick boxing events. He is also the member of the
dance group.
The education department at the Home realized
his exceptional interest in studies. The school he
was studying is only till class 5th. So, the teachers at
the Home began to look for a school for G.
Consequently, they helped him prepare for
entrance tests. This session, he cleared the
entrance test and the interview at a very renowned
boarding residential school-Lawrence boarding
school Sanawar. He has started the new session
from February. He has done well in the first unit
test and scored brilliantly around 98%. In future, he
wants to pursue his dream of becoming an
engineer.
Similarly, two girls and another boy are enrolled in
the boarding school owing to their efforts and
available opportunities.

H er will to survive and our determination to

give her every opportunity to live a long and
healthy, stood to test the old adage –where there is
a will, there is a way. Her victory in overcoming ill
health has opened up a whole new future for her.. a
future she dreamt of… where she will go to school,
make friends, and empower her future….
R was 10 years old when she came to Rose Home in
the year 2012. She came here through a social
worker. She belongs to Bihar but refused to share
the details about her family except that her mother
passed away a fortnight of her coming to the Home.
She was emaciated and stressed out. She would
keep calm and reserved initially. We started a
buddy system at the Home to help children like R
come out of their inhibitions and make friends. It
worked and in no time she was seen playing with
her buddies. She also showed enthusiasm in studies
also. So, after a brief nom-formal education, we got
her enrolled in a government school.
Despite her interest in activities, she would not be
able to participate much complaining of body aches.
The health team got her checked at various hospitals
but nothing was diagnosed.
After regular follow ups, R was diagnosed with spine
tuberculosis. She also had minor paralyses and her
limbs were not moving. She was admitted to Lady
Hardinge hospital. Consequently, three surgeries
were done. Special nutrition and medication were
provided by SBT.
Limited finances did not deter SBT to hire two
attendants to be with R at the hospital throughout
in shifts. Her treatment went on for eight months
at the hospital. The long months were full of pain,
boredom, fear and irritability but her fellow peers
and staff stood by her in each of these moments
providing hope and cheer. The medical social
worker made sure that the girl got the best
treatment and worked overtime to follow up on
the case.
The girl is now studying through N.I.O.S. and is very
eager to go to school in the next academic session.
She has a good peer interaction and is involved in a
lot of the regular activities of the centre. R is still
continuing with medications but had shown
strength in winning the battle against severe ill
health.

to find a track towards sustainable employment.
They came to SBT's children home through the
contact points. It was a new sense of comfort and
hope. After initial assessment and non formal
education, they began studying in schools. M was
going to the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Mehta
Vidyalaya School. He successfully completed high
school through CBSE board with 84% of Marks and
intermediate (Science stream) with 64% of Marks.
His dream was to become a successful engineer.
Whereas A studied at Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya,
Malcha Marg, New Delhi. He completed high
school through CBSE board with 58% of Marks. He
was admitted in intermediate (Arts stream) in the
same school. He cleared the examination with 63%
marks in CBSE board exam. A was keen on pursuing
Bachelors in Business Administration course. He
got admission in YMCA and completed the three
year course last year.
SBT is proud to successfully rehabilitate them into
an employment of their choice. A has joined as a
marketing executive, Berger group in Delhi
whereas M has joined a real estate company in
Neemrana, Rajasthan.
A, further intends to pursue MBA through distance
education and M wants to do M.Tech after working
briefly.
