Cognitive Psychology

Midterm Performance Task

Exploring Auditory Recall:

The Effects of Blindfolding and Delays on Musical Memory Retention

Introduction:
The human capacity for auditory recall and memory retention plays a pivotal role in
various cognitive processes, including learning and adaptation. In the realm of music,
where auditory stimuli are rich and complex, understanding how individuals perceive,
retain, and reproduce musical patterns is of significant interest. This experiment aims to
explore the effects of blindfolding and delays on musical memory retention, particularly
in the context of observing and replicating piano keystrokes.

Objectives:
To assess how different factors such as anticipation, repetition, time delays and sudden
change on task conditions affect cognitive processes in terms of Sensation, Perception
and Attention.

Methods and Materials:

Methods:
Controlled Experiment and Self-Reports
Materials:
Piano Keyboard and Blindfold.

Procedure:
1. Find a subject of experiment.
2. Prepare the Materials and instruct the subject to observe and do not give the
instruction yet.
3. One of the experimenters will play the Piano. The experimenter will press the 7 keys
of the Piano one at a time while the subject is standing by and observing the
experimenter. The experimenter can press the keys randomly or in any order.
4. After the experimenter pressed all the 7 keys, it’s now the turn of the subject to press
the keys based on how the experimenter did.
5. The experimenter will do it again, in the same procedure but this time the subject
knows what will happen.
6. The experimenter will repeat the same procedure again, the only difference is that
the subject will not use the piano immediately afterwards. The experimenter must
wait 2 minutes before letting the subject play the piano.
7. The experimenter will do the same procedure with that of the procedure he did on
the 3rd time but this the subject will be blindfolded on that 2 minutes waiting time
while the Experimenter presses on the same keys that the subject observed him do,
only that the keys were higher this time.
