ORGANIC AGRICULTURE

TOPIC 1: ORGANIC FERTILIZER

Intended Learning Outcomes: At the end of this module, the student must have:
1. Identified the sources, characteristics, and benefits of Organic fertilizer.
2. Determined the functions of 3 major nutrients, the element nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in plants.
3. Analyzed statement whether an illustration is OF and SF using given statements.
4. Created a concoction using the steps provided.
5. Made video while making the concoction.

A. INTRODUCTION

For centuries, the Philippines has been farming using the traditional methods of growing crops (Lesaca, 2012). It was
chemical-free and used only available natural resources within the farm.

The use of Organic Fertilizer results in better soil structure and soils with sufficient amount of organic matter retain more
water for plant use.

Organic fertilizer comes from animal and plant matters such as chicken manure, pig manure, carabao manure, cow
manure, leaves of plants, rice straw, rice hull, etc. It is generally the most valuable soil condition. The materials from
organic fertilizer generally have the low content of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. As soil conditioners, organic
fertilizer helps prevent erosion, crushing and cracking of soil. They also retain soil humidity and improve the internal
drainage of the soil.

Nitrogen and other nutrient elements contained in organic fertilizer are released slowly. Thus, their continuous application
helps build up the soil, particularly when this is done for over a long period of time.

Organic fertilizer can be used in place of inorganic (synthetic/chemical) fertilizer. It serves as a supplemental to chemical
fertilizer.
