A. Description
(1) This manual contains maintenance and overhaul instructions for the 0.12kg (0.26lb) series
of Automatic Fire Extinguishers.
(2) The Automatic Fire Extinguisher vessel contains extinguishing agent Halon 1211 (BCF) or
Halon 1301 (BTM) depending on part number. Extinguishers containing Halon 1211 (BCF)
are pressurized with Oxygen Free Dry Nitrogen, Extinguishers containing Halon 1301 (BTM)
are self pressurized. The Extinguisher is designed to be installed within Aircraft Toilet
Cabinets, in a fixed position and has the ability to detect and suppress fires. Each
Extinguisher consists of a spherical container on which pre-formed arm / arms, Mounting
Brackets and fill boss are mounted. Each arm terminates in a special detector / discharge
nozzle, which will discharge the Extinguisher contents when a predetermined temperature
is reached.
(3) Each container comprises of two brass hemispheres, brazed together to form a sphere.
Each hemisphere is per-drilled in the appropriate position, to accommodate the discharge
arm / arms and fill port. When assembled, the Extinguisher is filled with the appropriate type
and amount of extinguishant via the fill valve in the fill port. It is then permanently sealed by
the eutectic slug / slugs and either a blanking plug, pressure indicator or pressure switch,
fitted to the Extinguisher fill port.
(4) The arm / arms are pre-formed to suit the Aircraft installation requirements and must not
be adjusted as this may stress the arm-to-cylinder attachment points. The arm / arms
terminate with a special detector / discharge nozzle, which consists of a heat sensitive
capsule (slug). The capsule, in its passive mode, prevents leakage of extinguishant from the
Extinguisher. In the active mode, the heat sensitive capsule melts at a predetermined
temperature and permits the flow of extinguishant.
(5) The pressure indicator (if fitted) is permanently mounted on the fill port. A needle in the
GREEN sector indicates a serviceable Extinguisher.

(7) Variations
The procedures described in this manual are applicable to all the 0.12kg series of Automatic
Fire Extinguishers. The part number defines the Extinguisher, type of extinguishant, the
number of arms and if fitted with blanking plug, pressure indicator or pressure switch on
the fill boss.
(8) Installation
Automatic Fire Extinguishers in the 0.12kg series, are designed to be installed in Aircraft
Toilet Cabinets to protect the waste (trash) bin area against fire. The detector / discharge
nozzle being positioned such that a waste bin fire will activate the Eutectic capsule allowing
discharge of extinguishant into the waste bin. In order to afford easy service checks, the
pressure indicator (if fitted) should be readily visible. The Extinguisher must be correctly
orientated and mounted securely by its integral mounting bracket.

B. Operation
(1) In the passive mode, the Extinguishant remains in situ in the aircraft awaiting the
predetermined temperature to activate the Extinguisher. Once this temperature is reached,
the Extinguisher enters the active mode. On sensing the operation temperature, the heat
sensitive capsule at the discharge end of the Extinguisher arm / arms, melts around its
periphery and is ejected from the arm thus allowing full discharge of the extinguishant. In
discharge, the pressure indicator (if fitted) will fall to zero, likewise the pressure switch (if
fitted) will operate.

B. Repair of a pressure switch (20) is limited to replacement of the cable tail or MS connector.
C. To replace the cable tail on pressure switch (20D), pull back along cable tail protective boot
and unscrew pressure switch cap.
D. De-solder the existing cable and using 60/40 solder, solder the new cable ensuring correct
cable colour coding.
E. To replace the connector on pressure switch (20C), unscrew the 4 retaining bolts and pull
gently away from pressure switch. Remove (de-solder) cable from connector pins. Repair
or replace connector.
F. Solder, using 60/40 solder, the pressure switch (20C) cables to new connector ensuring
the correct pins are used. Place connector back on to pressure switch body and screw in
place with the 4 retaining bolts.
NOTE: Do not twist pressure switch inner cable assembly, as this may cause a
malfunction of the micro switch within the body of the pressure switch.
WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE THE TEST SET UP UNATTENDED WHILST TEST IS IN PROGRESS.
NOTE: Due to extremely minute movement of the mechanical mechanism in the micro
switch, it is possible for the switch to adopt a neutral setting i.e. neither making
contact across normally open or normally closed leads / pins. The point at which
this occurs varies with the component tolerances of the switch and the
subsequent assembly. It is therefore possible for the switch to exhibit open
circuit characteristics when in the quiescent state. However, on falling pressure
due to activation of the Extinguisher, the switch will make contact across the
Black and Yellow leads or pins E and C.
