1. Introduction:
This project aims to create an automated motion sensor switch utilizing the CD4017
integrated circuit (IC) and an E18-D80NK IR proximity sensor. The primary objective is to
automate the operation of a washroom light, turning it on when motion is detected and off
when motion ceases. Additionally, this circuit can be adapted for use as a motion sensor
alarm.

2. Project Components:

The project requires the following components:

1. CD4017 IC

2. BC557 PNP Transistor

3. BC547 NPN Transistor

4. Capacitors: 100uF 25V and 1000uF 25V

5. Resistors: 220-ohm 0.25watt (x3), 1k 0.25watt, 10k 0.25watt

6. LEDs: 5mm (x2)

7. E18-D80NK IR proximity sensor

8. 1N4007 Diode

9. 5V SPDT Relay

10. HLK-PM01 5V AC to DC converter

11. Connectors & IC Base

12. Latched Switches (x2)

3. Circuit Operation:

The IR proximity sensor emits infrared radiation continuously. When an object enters its
range, reflected infrared radiation is detected by the sensor, signaling motion.

Upon detecting motion, the output pin of the IR proximity sensor shifts to a LOW state,
activating the BC557 PNP transistor.

The CD4017 IC, connected to receive a clock pulse from the BC557 transistor, changes the
current state of Pin-2.

Pin-2 controls the BC547 NPN transistor, which, when activated, allows current to flow
through the relay coil, activating the connected load (in this case, the light).
When motion ceases, Pin-2 returns to a low state, deactivating the transistor and turning off
the load.

4. Connection Diagram:

5. Testing and Breadboarding:

The circuit was tested on a breadboard using a 5V DC supply. The operation was verified,
with the green LED indicating motion detection and the red LED indicating relay activation.

6. Conclusion:

The motion sensor switch project offers an efficient and convenient solution for automating
washroom lighting. The system detects motion accurately, enhancing user experience and
energy efficiency.
