presents. While some businesses have a formal selection procedure, others rely on referrals from
staff or suppliers. According to our research, formal selection procedures may assist businesses
make sure that the presents they are buying for their clients are acceptable and useful.

Our findings also have the consequence that businesses should take into account the cultural
and religious preferences of their clientele when choosing corporate presents. Businesses may
think about offering traditional sweets or fruits as presents on occasions like Eid al-Fitr, a
prominent event in Bangladesh.

Chapter 01: Introduction
Companies use corporate gift-giving as a strategy to establish and sustain ties with their partners

Chapter 2: Corporate Gifts: Industry Perspective

2.01 Top Industries for Corporate Gifts

Pharmaceutical, FMCG, real estate, telecommunications, and financial industries are among the
leading recipients of corporate gifts in Bangladesh. Research by the Bangladesh Association of
Pharmaceutical Industries claims that the pharmaceutical business has a market of BDT 241
billion and is expected to develop at a 15% annual pace. Square Pharmaceuticals, Incepta
Pharmaceuticals, and Beximco Pharmaceuticals are three of Bangladesh's leading
pharmaceutical firms.

With a market size of BDT 1.4 trillion in 2020, Bangladesh's FMCG sector has also seen rapid
expansion in recent years. Unilever, Nestle, and Reckitt Benckiser are among the leading FMCG
firms in Bangladesh.

The Bangladeshi real estate market is expected to reach BDT 100 billion in 2020, having
experienced impressive expansion. Concord Group, Bashundhara Group, and Rangs Properties
are a few of Bangladesh's leading real estate firms.

With a market value of BDT 416.4 billion in 2020, the telecommunications sector in Bangladesh
will be one of the fastest-growing sectors in the nation. The leading telecom providers in
Bangladesh include Grameenphone, Robi Axiata, and Banglalink.

The Bangladeshi financial sector has also experienced consistent expansion throughout the
years, and by 2020, it is expected to have a market value of BDT 615 billion. BRAC Bank, Dutch-
Bangla Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank are some of Bangladesh's biggest financial
institutions.

The presence of these businesses and sectors in Bangladesh makes them ideal recipients of
corporate gifting initiatives. For businesses wishing to create their own gift-giving programs,
understanding the gift-giving customs in these industries can be a great source of information.

4
2.02 Categories of Most Purchased Gifts

1. Electronics: Particularly in the telecommunications and financial sectors, presents like

cellphones, tablets, headphones, and power banks are popular options for business gifts.
2. Apparel: In the pharmaceutical and real estate sectors, apparel including shirts, coats, and
ties is a common option for corporate presents.
3. Food and drink: Corporate gifts in the FMCG sector frequently include gift baskets filled
with treats like chocolates, almonds, and coffee.
4. Stationery: Across several sectors, supplies like pens, notebooks, and folders are popular
selections for corporate gifts.
5. Desk accessories: The real estate and financial sectors frequently present desk
accessories as corporate gifts, including desk sets, clocks, and paperweights.
6. Gift certificates: Across all industries, gift cards or certificates for dining establishments,
shops, or vacation are all common options for corporate presents.

2.03 Reasons for Preferring Specific Gifts

1. Utility: The most frequent factor in choosing a particular present is its utility. 58% of
respondents to a Giftex Bangladesh poll stated that they prefer receiving presents that are
useful and practical for everyday usage. For instance, products like pens, purses, and
coffee cups are common since they may be used both at home and at the office.

2. Branding: The capacity of a certain present to advance the reputation of the business is
another consideration. This is especially valid for products like calendars, keychains, and
office supplies that include the brand's emblem or name. Actually, 22% of respondents in
the same Giftex Bangladesh poll said they preferred receiving presents that boosted the
company's reputation.

3. Cost-effectiveness: Businesses could choose inexpensive presents. Items like USB

drives or notepads, for instance, could be cheap yet nonetheless valuable to recipients.
By doing this, businesses may reduce expenses while still giving presents to staff
members or customers.

4. Personalization: Some businesses might want to give presents that can be tailored to
the recipient's preferences. For instance, a gift basket filled with the recipient's favorite

5
products or a mug or t-shirt with a custom design may be appreciated. This might improve
the connection between the business and the recipient.

5. Cultural factors: In some circumstances, cultural factors may be taken into account while
selecting a particular gift. For instance, during key Bangladeshi festivals or holidays like
Eid al-Fitr or Durga Puja, some presents could be more suitable or desired. To respect
and appreciate their staff or customers, businesses may select presents that are in line
with certain cultural customs.

2.04 Approximate Expenses Incurred

The costs associated with corporate presents can vary significantly depending on the receiver,
event, and size of the firm. Additionally, businesses are becoming more cost-conscious and
searching for inexpensive yet thoughtful presents that may make a lasting impact on their
receivers. As a result, there is a growing need for unique and customized presents that meet the
particular wants and interests of the recipients while staying within the company's financial
constraints.

1. Pharmaceutical Industry: According to our analysis, Bangladeshi pharmaceutical

businesses spend between BDT 3,000 and 5,000 on gifts on average. Nevertheless, this
might vary greatly depending on the situation and the intended receiver. The quantity and
cost of gifts that can be given to doctors and other healthcare workers are restricted by
tight restrictions that apply to businesses in this field.

2. FMCG Industry: Due to the fierce competition in the FMCG sector, businesses frequently
employ corporate gifts to foster ongoing connections with their retailers and distributors.
According to our study, businesses in this sector in Bangladesh spend an average of 1,500
to 3,000 BDT each present. Companies, though, could spend extra on valuable clients or
on special events.

3. Real Estate Sector: Compared to other sectors, the real estate sector has a smaller client
base, therefore corporate gifts are not as common there. An average of 1,000 to 2,000
BDT is what businesses in this sector spend in Bangladesh.

6
4. Finance Industry: Businesses in the finance sector in Bangladesh likewise often serve
fewer clients and have lesser budgets for corporate gifts. According to our study,
businesses in this sector spend, on average, between 800 and 1,500 BDT each present.
5. Telecom Industry: When it comes to spending on corporate gifts, the telecom sector in
Bangladesh is in the center of the pack. A typical present costs BDT 2,000 to BDT 3,000
for businesses in this sector.

7
Chapter 3: Existing Corporate Gifts Examples
The corporate gifting culture in Bangladesh is still in its infancy. As such there is a lack of variation
and uniqueness among different companies’ gifting practices. The main focus of such gifts tends
to be on utility factor and cost effectiveness.

Gifts usually include traditional items such as calendar, pen, mugs, sweets, fruit baskets, or
handicrafts, as well as more modern items like gadgets, accessories, and gift vouchers. It is also
common for businesses to personalize their gifts with their logo or branding. Here we explore
some examples:

UCB Asset management: UCB asset management mainly provides two types of gifts. For mid
management and high-end gifts for important clients. Normal gifts include calendars, notepads,
pen holder, mug etc. Whereas the premium gifts include personalized gift boxes with contents
and messages with the client’s name which may include diaries, water bottle, wooden table clock.

Chapter 4: Corporate Gifts: New Perspective

The trend of corporate gifts in recent times has been a lot diverse. Companies belonging to
different industries are trying to develop new ideas of corporate gifts to ensure stakeholder
satisfaction. Due to the growing awareness of saving the environment from being polluted, a
green movement is being continued for a while now. The terms ‘re-use, reduce and recycle’ are
being uttered on a regular basis. So, corporate gifts also need to be reflecting and incorporating
these factors.

In our country, Green Corporate Gift’s idea is not that much popular till now. But in countries like
South Korea, Japan etc., this idea is very popular. Gifts made of plastic do not decompose easily.
Besides, some products contribute to carbon emissions heavily. There are also some products or
gifts that cannot be recycled (after a single use, the user has to throw it away!) It is high time our
country’s corporate sector adopted this idea. Some of the new corporate gifts that ensure these
criteria are proposed below:

(1) Wooden Chessboard

Quality Premium
Characteristics Non-magnetic
Made from Wood Scraps/Wood Offcuts
Raw Materials Resin, Veneer Polish, Wood Scraps, glue
Shape Oval
Board Dimension Generally, 9’’/9’’
Outer border: Length 15.5-inch, Width 12.5-inch
Can be customized easily

Apart from being a popular indoor game, chess (in fact Chessboard) can be considered a very
unique gift item. Available chessboard packages in the market contain plastic-made chess pieces
and hardboard made chessboard with polythene coating. Plastic and Polythene are harmful for
the environment.

In this case, wooden chessboard is a very good alternative. It looks premium, durable in nature,
no plastic or polythene usage. To make wooden chessboard, it is not necessary to cut down trees
on a massive scale. Even wood scraps can be used to make this product by recycling.

The Checkerboard pattern on the chessboard is created by combining 64 different wooden scrap
pieces, 32 of them being off-white colored and the remaining are chocolate colored. The chess

13
pieces are also engraved into different patterns which looks really aesthetic. Unlike the plastic
pieces which are of fragile nature, these chess pieces are durable too.

Feasibility and Ease of Implementation:

While talking about feasibility or ease of implementation of this corporate gift idea, one of the
questions that may come to our mind is, ‘Is it possible to produce this corporate gift in large scale?’
The feasibility or the ease of implementation of this corporate gift idea is also a function of several
factors such as:

(a) Technical support to produce on large scale or within a short notice,

(b) Viability of producing on bulk, from Financial Perspective.
(c) Compliance with the industry practices, Any Competitive edge over competitors,
(d) Compatibility in terms of organizational culture.

These factors are analysed below:

Feasibility
Factors Description Rating (on a
scale of 10)
The production of these chessboards is not heavily
technical. It can be done manually, even laser
Technical machine can also do the job. Even without 7.5
experienced carpenters, it can be prepared. The
only challenging factor is the finishing touch.

15
The retail price of these types of chessboards is
around 4200-5000/-. From vendor perspective, it is
very easy to cut costs, by varying the size of the
chessboard. A rough cost estimation/budget is
given below:

Wooden Scraps 2,000-2,500/-

Wages of Carpenter 1,000-1,200/-
Financial Resin, Veneer Polish, Glue 100-200/- 8.5
Miscellaneous 100/-
Total 3,200-4,000/-

Thus, Organization can also cut costs and still

ensure the profit of vendors. Due to the economies
of scale, the marginal cost will gradually fall after
bulk production.
These types of gifts are still very uncommon in the
Market market or industry. Wooden pen or tissue box is
very common till now. This corporate gift ensures 8
a premium feel; thus, it can give competitive edge.
This type of gift will surely promote positive
organizational culture. This will give a strong
Organizational message to the clients that the organization is 9
committed to provide premium quality gifts to
privileged clients and continue the strong business
tie.

16
Total Score = (7.5 + 8.5 + 8 + 9) = 33

Average Feasibility Score = 8.25

Comment: As the average feasibility score is more than 8, considering all the factors, this
corporate gift idea is pretty much feasible.
