we were off on a whirlwind of crafting, baking', shopping and wrapping. The rest of the year we were planning - anticipation, after all, is part of the fun. These days, with a family of my own, the holidays are still a Big Deal. Some of our traditions come from my childhood (a back-bacon-ona-bun breakfast, an impromptu a cappella version of Walter Schumann's "Christmas Tree"), and some are new ideas we've come to embrace (Christmas dinner at lunchtime, for example), To my mind, that combination of traditional and modem is what makes this time of year so special. and that's what this issue reflects: use a little of this, a dash of that, and make your own memories that Will last futever.

Heirloom ornaments are perfect to pass on to new homeowners who might not have a substantial set to trim their tree's branches with old-school charm. But ornaments, particularly our favourites, don't have to be relegated solely to the tree: place them in Christmas vignettes on mantels, an entryway console and the holiday table.

No matter what material. style or pedigree, vintage buttons often have a decidedly decorative appeal. So instead of stashing them away in a jar, craft them into a charming little item that can be used as a key chain, ornament or wineglass charm. If you don't have any interesting or ornate buttons on hand, find them at antiques stores or flea markets, on an old coat or at the bottom of your grandmother's sewing kit. String complementary buttons onto a piece of medium-gauge wire, twist a loop at the top and attach to metal hoops from a local craft store. It takes nearly no time at all to create a set of six, and the result is a gift that's, quite literally, as cute as a button. 42

When heading to your next holiday party, cast aside the tired potted poinsettia in favour of a personalized miniature tree with decorations. This show-stopping gift displays old photos, Victorian gift cones and a handmade star. To create the picture decorations, print out or photocopy favourite photos or Christmas images and glue onto card stock; border the images with pipe cleaners, punch two holes in the top and hang with ribbon. To make the Victorian cones, glue photocopied sheet music onto card stock, form into a cone, and glue the long edges together; trim with gathered crepe paper fastened to the cone with glue and attach to the tree with a pipe cleaner. The star is simple, too: Cut a star shape out of foam board and decorate it with glitter and ribbon. Then fasten the star to the top of a stake, which you can place in the soil so it stands tall and upright

No matter how old we get, Christmas continues to be a celebration of tradition and ritual, especially when it comes to the dishes we so dearly associate with the festivities. Family favourites can always be relied upon to lift our spirits and bring back fond memories. They're comforting, rich in nostalgia, and never lacking in substance - or flavour, of course! We asked a few of our favourite Food Network chefs to divulge that one that is, and always has been, a must-have at their own Christmas celebrations. Here's what they shared.
