notes I from our editor

I love the look

of my vintage collectibles mixed with mod-

we were off on a whirlwind of crafting, baking', shopping and wrapping. The rest of the year we were planning - anticipation, after all, is part of the fun. These days, with a family of my own, the holidays are still a Big Deal. Some of our traditions come from my childhood (a back-bacon-ona-bun breakfast, an impromptu a cappella version of Walter Schumann's "Christmas Tree"), and some are new ideas we've come to embrace (Christmas dinner at lunchtime, for example), To my mind, that combination of traditional and modem is what makes this time of year so special. and that's what this issue reflects: use a little of this, a dash of that, and make your own memories that Will last futever.

A few years later and you're

well on your way to having a good stock of holiday decorations )rou can call on every year. Maybe you've been picking up ornaments at antique's markets, or maybe you treat yourself to a couple of new ones every year from your favourite boutique, and now you have enough to make an impact on your tree. Don't toss the ribbons' just yet, though. Simply change up your colour scheme to fill in any gaps in the greenery, and add in a new shade or two so you're working with three or four hues instead of just two. You can also invest in a few ,garlands of tinsel to complete the look with an extra hint of shine.

Heirloom ornaments are perfect to pass on to new homeowners who might not have a substantial set to trim their tree's branches with old-school charm. But ornaments, particularly our favourites, don't have to be relegated solely to the tree: place them in Christmas vignettes on mantels, an entryway console and the holiday table.

~on

No matter what material. style or pedigree, vintage buttons often have a decidedly decorative appeal. So instead of stashing them away in a jar, craft them into a charming little item that can be used as a key chain, ornament or wineglass charm. If you don't have any interesting or ornate buttons on hand, find them at antiques stores or flea markets, on an old coat or at the bottom of your grandmother's sewing kit. String complementary buttons onto a piece of medium-gauge wire, twist a loop at the top and attach to metal hoops from a local craft store. It takes nearly no time at all to create a set of six, and the result is a gift that's, quite literally, as cute as a button. 42

When heading to your next holiday party, cast aside the tired potted poinsettia in favour of a personalized miniature tree with decorations. This show-stopping gift displays old photos, Victorian gift cones and a handmade star. To create the picture decorations, print out or photocopy favourite photos or Christmas images and glue onto card stock; border the images with pipe cleaners, punch two holes in the top and hang with ribbon. To make the Victorian cones, glue photocopied sheet music onto card stock, form into a cone, and glue the long edges together; trim with gathered crepe paper fastened to the cone with glue and attach to the tree with a pipe cleaner. The star is simple, too: Cut a star shape out of foam board and decorate it with glitter and ribbon. Then fasten the star to the top of a stake, which you can place in the soil so it stands tall and upright

'For Colleen SymondS,

the holidays are all about celebrating the past in a fresh, classic way. Instead of filling her country-meetsglam home with Christmas kitsch, the owner of the enchanting antiques and home decor stole Roses and Rutabagas adorns her house with vint:age baubles and treasured trinket'> brimming with history. It's a fitting choice given the home's ag'e and history. The Mission-style dwelling in Abbotsford, B.C., was built in 1902 by renowned B.C. architect Samuel McClure for the owners of the area's first general mercantile. Since then, a number of upgrades have been made, including a new kitchen and changes to the laundry area, but many old architectural elements remain, such as most of the original floors, windows and mouldings. In the 12 yeats Colleen has lived here, she's always enhanced her home's aged feel by filling the house with vintage furniture and objets, The admitted salvage junkie credits her love for reinventing old pieces as the inspiration behind opening her shop, "Thinking outside the box and challenging the rules is what gives the 'wow' &0 any room," she says, The only rule she adheres to when it comes to home decor is choosing furniture and accessories that make her smile. One thing that makes her grin ear to ear? Sparkly, drippy light fixtures with lots or-e

"The more crazing, the better!" she says, Wl1en it comes 00 her Christmas look. Colleen sticks to her love of all things vintage. Just like her home, her holiday decor boasts a dean. monochromatic palette. "My trees are always white or cream, with at least one real flocked tree, which I usually place in the jiving room. This year 1 put it in the kitchen," she says. Splashes of vibrant turquoise add depth and life to the home's otherwise neutral palette, And for Colleen, it wouldn't be the holidays without a generous dose of sparkle. Old pieces of silver collected over the years make an appearance each season, and vintage mercury glass ornaments always have their place on the trees, Tradition is important te Colleen, who considers Christmas a time to reconnect with loved ones and entertain guests. "Even though the store keeps me quite busy around the holidays, reserving time to catch up with family and friends is a must. No matter how old we get, Christmas continues to be a celebration of tradition and ritual, especially when it comes to the dishes we so dearly associate with the festivities. Family favourites can always be relied upon to lift our spirits and bring back fond memories. They're comforting, rich in nostalgia, and never lacking in substance - or flavour, of course! We asked a few of our favourite Food Network chefs to divulge that one that is, and always has been, a must-have at their own Christmas celebrations. Here's what they shared.
