Watts Towers
In South-Central Los Angeles, in an
area known as Watts, there is an
unusual landmark which is called
Watts Towers. This landmark was
created by one man, and it took
more than three decades to build.
Building the Towers
Simon Rodia (1879-1965) is the man who built the towers. He immigrated to the US from Italy at age 15,
and began this project in 1921. Rodia was a construction genius. He drew no plans, had no architectural
or engineering training and used only simple, non-electric tools. In 1955, Rodia completed his project,
and then he gave his property to a neighbour and moved away.
Special Features
Rodia’s extraordinary work is the world’s largest structure built by one person. It’s got three towers rising
to 30, 29.5 and 16.5 metres and several shorter ones. Art historians believe that the tall lilies at the annual
lily festival which Rodia saw as a child in Italy gave him the idea for the towers. He used concrete, steel
and wire to build the structures in an “openwork” style – like the Eiffel Tower. Then he decorated them with
pottery, mirrors, glass bottles and seashells.
Safety Concerns
In 1959, the city of Los Angeles ordered the destruction of the towers for safety reasons. But some
people paid for a safety test to be done to save them. A cable was attached between the tallest tower
and a lorry, and the lorry attempted to pull it down. The tower was so strong that the lorry moved off the
ground!
Weird but True
In 1965, nearly 1,000 buildings in Watts were damaged in protests, but the towers were unharmed.
Simon Rodia appears next to Bob Dylan on the album cover of the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely
Hearts Club Band.
