HAND WASHING AND STERILE GLOVING

Good day ma’am. My name is Micaella Mariah Saladino from BSN1E a student nurse of our lady of the
pillar college cauayan. And today I will be performing return demonstration of hand washing or hand
hygiene procedure.

Hand Washing or hand hygiene is one of the most effective infection prevention measures. It also helps
to reduce the risk of transmission of microorganism, and help to prevent the risk of cross-contamination
among clients or patient.

Before starting the procedure we need to make sure that all the supply or equipment is complete and
gathered. I have here a bar soap or you can use a liquid soap, a paper towel, and also a sink with warm
running water. And now that our equipment are completed and ready, we can now start the procedure.

First stand in front of the sink and make sure our uniform will not touching the sink for entire procedure.
Because we considered this sink or this area as a contaminated area. And also we need to assess or
check our hands.

Make sure that our nails are short, because short and natural nails are less likely to harbor a
microorganism, and it will prevent us to scratch our clients, and it prevent to puncture our gloves.

And also remove any jewelries. Microorganism can lodge in the settings of our jewelries and under the
ring. Removal of this jewelry helps facilitate proper cleaning our hands and forearm.

And also check if there is any cut or leisure in hands. A nurse who has open sores may acquire work
assignment with decreased risk of transmission of infection or microorganism.

And after assessing our hand we can now start the procedure by turning on the water. Make sure to
adjust the flow of the waters that it won’t splash in our uniform. Because as I’ve said that this area is
considered as a contaminated area. And if the water will splash from the sink to our uniform it will also
be contaminated and it has the tendency that we can carry the microorganism from one place to
another. So we need to be careful in this part.

Wet our wrist to our fingers pointing the bottom of the sink with warm running water. And our hands
should below of our elbow. And always remember that the flow of the water is from the least
contaminated area to the most contaminated area, which our hand is considered as a more
contaminated area than the lower arm.

After wetting our hand apply the soap to get a lather into our hands. Return the soap to its container
and firmly rub our palm in a circular motion. Circular movement creates a friction which helps to remove
the microorganism. And also include the back of our both hands and both wrist and do this for 15 to 20
seconds.

Allow the water to flow because we will be turning it off later using a paper towel.

Placed the right palm to the back of our left hands with finger interlaced and rub it for about 5 times
and vice versa. Interlacing the fingers and thumb helps to clean interdigital space.

And of course rub palm to palm with finger interlaced. And course rub the back of the finger opposing
palms with fingers interlocked. And now we need to rub each thumb clasped in opposite hand in left
palm with rotational movement. Rotational movement just like this. And also to inform you that this
assessment consist of a minimum of 40 seconds and maximum of 1 minute.

Then after that make sure that our fingernails are clean so rotational rubbing it backward and forward
with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa.

Then lastly rub your wrist to make sure that microorganism will remove.

After that we will now rinse our hand and wrist. Still our fingers and hands down, elbow up. Do not turn
off the faucet yet.

Thoroughly pat dry the hand and wrist with a paper towel without scrubbing. Moist skin becomes
chopped readily when the skin rubbed vigorously and it will produced lesions.

Use another paper towel to turn off the faucet
